Nelson Smith ran for a career-high 157 yards and two touchdowns and Navy defeated East Carolina 27-23 on Saturday. Smith, a senior, bested his career high for the second straight game after gaining 120 yards in a win over Temple last week. Jamale Carothe rs added 82 yards and another score for the Midshipmen (3-2, 3-0 American). Rahjai Harris, who rushed for 115 yards the week before, had career highs with 172 yards and an 80-yard TD for the Pirates (1-3, 1-2). ECU freshman Mason Garcia made his first st art in place of Holton Ahlers, who, along with a handful of other Pirates, had to sit following COVID-19 contract tracing. - AP College Football

Nelson Smith ran for 96 yards with three touchdowns, Diego Fagot had nine tackles and Navy dominated Holy Cross 45-7 in the regular-season opener Saturday. After passing for just 12 yards through much of the first half, Malcolm Perry found Mychal Cooper for a 44-yard gain in the final minute. Two plays later Perry scored from the 1, boosting the lead to 24-7 and the Midshipmen were never threatened the rest of the way. Perry was 6 of 9 for 103 yards and a 162.8 quarterback rating. Despite some added foc us on throwing the ball, Navy still builds its offense around the triple-option and amassed 428 yards on the ground against the Crusaders. - AP College Football
