UL running back Trey Ragas was picked Monday to play in the East-West Shrine Bowl. But he can't go. The prestigious postgame game for senior NFL prospects that had been scheduled for Jan. 23 at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida, has been cancele d due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The bowl, first played in 1925, is announcing all-star selections throughout December to recognize outstanding seniors anyway.A fifth-year senior, Ragas has an option to return to UL in 2021 because all FBS players have been granted an extra season. But the East-West Shrine selection also affords him an opportunity to participate in virtual training sessions in preparation for the 2021 NFL Draft. Ragas has 660 yards and nine touchdowns on 117 carries this season. H e scored three touchdowns in No. 17 UL's 24-21 win Friday night at Appalachian State, including two rushing and one on a throw from quarterback Levi Lewis. Ragas also was named Louisiana Sports Writers Association state Offensive Player of the Week on Mo nday. - Daily Advertiser

The UL backfield is loaded this season and it's the worst kept secret in college football. Trey Ragas, Raymond Calais and Elijah Mitchell have preseason hype, accolades and expectations that challenge any in the history of Ragin' Cajuns football. So how are they approaching the upcoming season, knowing they'll be the focus of opposing defenses all year facing aggressive run-stop schemes and stacked boxes all year? Humility. "We know we are very strong at running back," said Calais. "We know the defense will stack the box, so we are approaching it by being humble. Coach (Jabbar) Juluke always tells us to not worry about polls or preseason predictions. That is just noise. We aren't worried about that. We are worried about camp and worried about getting b etter. That is what we are focused on.""Juluke always tells us not to get caught up in that stuff," said Ragas, who missed most of spring practice after getting his knee scoped. "That is when you get relaxed and you don't have that same dog in you . We don't pay attention to any of that. We always want to act like it's our freshman year and we want to get that spot." - The Daily Advertiser
