  10/03/20 - TE Tony PoljanrSr/2021, Virginia, 6-7, 251 (DS#7 TE) + More +

Tight end Tony Poljan, who also stands at 6-7, caught four passes for 44 yards, including a 14-yard reception on a third down in the fourth quarter. The reception extended the drive, which resulted in a touchdown to Davis Jr. on the next play. Poljan, who played quarterback at the beginning of his collegiate career, says there's major room for improvement in his route running. He's studied current Las Vegas Raiders tight end and former Dallas Cowboys great Jason Witten since making the positional switch, and he's hoping to run routes more efficiently as Virginia's season progresses. Through one week, however, the graduate transfer tight end from Central Michigan has seamlessly integrated into the offense. "I would say since we have had a longer time to practice than normal due to the virus that chemistry is there more," Poljan said. "I would say it's just one of those things that take a lot of practice and a lot of repetition to be able to trust it with those third-down catches." - Charlottesville Daily Progress

According to NCAA Bylaw 20.9.9.1, a school must sponsor at least 16 sports and six of those sports must be a men's sports to remain compliant for the FBS, the NCAA's top rung of football. After cutting men's track and field in May, the school submitted a waiver to the NCAA to allow the school to remain compliant to the body's requirements of six men's sports. CMU was down to five men's sports when it cut men's track and field. CMU Athletic Director Michael Alford said in a statement the waiver has been granted for the 2020-21 and the 2021-22 academic years. CMU must add another men's sport by 2022 to remain FBS compliant. - Morning Sun

The Mid-American Conference athletic landscape has changed significantly in recent weeks as a direct result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Most recently, on May 15, the MAC announced it was implementing a cost-cutting plan for football heading into the 2020 season. As it stands the travel rosters for conference games will drop from 76 to 70 this fall and host teams will no longer be staying in hotels on the nights before games. These cost-cutting measures will save the conference a significant amount of money this fall. Players will now stay in their apartments or dorm rooms the night before game day. On May 12 the MAC announced it was eliminating eight conference tournaments and modifying the format to seven other conference tournaments. At Central Michigan University the athletic program has also cut pay to numerous coaches and administrators as a byproduct of the COVID-19 pandemic. - Morning Sun
