 Dedrick Mills, Nebraska, Player News

Nebraska senior running back Dedrick Mills sought out Scott Frost right before the regular-season finale at Rutgers. There was a sense of urgency in Mills' voice. "I told Coach Frost, 'I ain't going to lie to you, this game I just need the ball," Mills said Tuesday. "He was already talking about the cold and how there wasn't going to be much of a passing game. I knew it was going to be more of a running-type game. "He even asked me what my favorite play was." Mills prefers the inside zone game. He wanted to test the middle of Rutgers' defense. The plan worked extremely well. He rushed 25 times for 191 yards in his team's 28-21 win Dec. 18 in Piscataway, New Jersey. It ended up being Mills' final game as a Husker. The 24-year-old Georgia native announced Tuesday that he is turning his sights to professional football rather than returning to Nebraska and using the extra year of eligibility granted by the NCAA. The 5-foot-11, 220-pound Mills finished the season with 84 carries for 396 yards (4.7 yards per carry) and three touchdowns. He also had 12 receptions for 85 yards. - Lincoln Journal Star

2020 PRESEASON DOAK WALKER AWARD WATCH LIST: Dedrick Mills (Sr.), Nebraska,...Mills, a senior from Waycross, Ga., made a significant impact in his first season at Nebraska in 2019. He led the Huskers with 745 yards and 10 rushing touchdowns, earning honorable-mention All-Big Ten accolades from both the coaches and media. Mills posted a pair of 100-yard rushing efforts for the Huskers in 2019, highlighted by a 188-yard performance against No. 15 Wisconsin. His other 100-yard performance came against Northern Illinois, when he had 116 yards and a score on just 11 carries. That performance included a career-long 61-yard run. He finished eighth in rushing and touchdowns in Big Ten play in 2019. It is the second time Mills has been on the preseason Doak Walker list, as he was also on it following his freshman year at Georgia Tech. - Nebraska Football

2019 ALL-BIG TEN HONORABLE MENTION (COACHES): Dedrick Mills,...Mills also earned recognition from the coaches and media. He led the Nebraska running game in his first season with the Huskers, rushing for 745 yards and 10 touchdowns. Mills ranked ninth in the Big Ten in rushing yards per game, and his 10 rushing touchdowns were the second-most by a Husker since 2014. - Nebraska Football

Dedrick Mills, the new Nebraska running back who already has NCAA Division I playing experience, continues to impress his teammates, and now it comes after four days of official fall practice. A transfer from Garden City (Kansas) Community College, Mills has two seasons of eligibility remaining. He rushed for 1,358 yards and 19 touchdowns last season at Garden City. He was the No. 1-ranked junior college running back according to 247Sports. In 2016, Mills rushed for 771 yards and 12 touchdowns in nine games at Georgia Tech, capping the year with a 31-carry, 169-yard performance against Kentucky to earn MVP honors in the TaxSlayer Bowl.

Husker defensive lineman Darrion Daniels has been impressed with Mills. "Mills gets it done," Daniels said after practice on Monday morning. "I had a little pent-up aggression against him the first day because we were in helmets and that's it, and he was running through the hole like we got full pads on. That's the type of intensity we need for the defense to get better. And him running hard forces all the other running backs to run hard, and so when you got running backs running hard you got linebackers having to push harder, too, and it's like a domino effect every time somebody steps up their level of intensity." - Lincoln Journal Star
