Nick McCloud made the most of his trip out to Hawaii to play in Sunday's Hula Bowl. The former Notre Dame cornerback intercepted a pair of passes and took home defensive MVP honors for Team Kai in a 15-13 win over Team 'Aina. McCloud was joined by Notre Dame teammate Shaun Crawford in the postseason all-star game and pre-draft showcase at Honolulu's Aloha Stadium. McCloud intercepted one more pass in the Hula Bowl than he did in his one season at Notre Dame. The grad transfer from N.C. State tallied 33 tackles, two tackles for a loss, one interception, eight pass breakups and two fumble recoveries in 12 games with the Irish. McCloud intercepted a pass thrown by former Northwestern quarterback Peyton Ramsey in the second quarter of the Hula Bowl. He lat er picked off Tulsa's Zach Smith with less than five minutes remaining in the game to slow Team 'Aina's rally attempt. - South Bend Tribune

For the fifth straight offseason, Notre Dame will look for a new starting boundary cornerback. Nick McCloud announced via social media on Tuesday that he will declare for the NFL Draft. He becomes the latest one-and-done No. 1 boundary corner for the Iri sh. Notre Dame planned on having McCloud for one season when plucking him as a graduate transfer from N.C. State in June. But the NCAA implemented a new rule in wake of the COVID-19 pandemic stipulating that this season does not count as a year of eligib ility. Still, McCloud declined that option. The 6-foot-1, 192-pound McCloud led the Irish with eight pass breakups and claimed third-team All-ACC honors this season. McCloud also tallied 33 tackles, two tackles for a loss, two fumble recoveries and an in terception. - South Bend Tribune

The 6-foot-1, 192-pound McCloud covered Duke's bigger receivers. His role requires him to be physical, contest 50-50 balls and offer run support. Quarterback Chase Brice completed 4-of-7 passes for 39 yards when targeting McCloud's man. McCloud tied for third on the team in tackles (five) and recorded a pass breakup on a back-shoulder throw. He nearly intercepted that pass. The Irish featured McCloud in plenty of man-to-man coverage. What McCloud demonstrated in both techniques encouraged Burris about h is potential for this season. "He has a skill set that can play off or press. He does it very well," Burris said. "When he's up in press, he can be physical. But he has the length that can take away some of those deep-ball threats going down the field. T hat's why you saw more back-shoulder fades against Duke." The Irish listed McCloud and true freshman Clarence Lewis as boundary corner co-starters in their week one depth chart. How McCloud played figured to be a reason why he never came out of the game. He lined up at corner for all of Brice's 37 pass attempts. Lewis did not play a snap. - South Bend Tribune

Before Nick McCloud's January plunge into the transfer portal was 24 hours old, the Notre Dame football staff had already digested two of his NC State game tapes and started to amass background info. The more people they talked to about the 6-foot-1, 190 -pound Wolfpack captain and the more they got to know him personally, the less he felt like a contingency and the more he projected as an asset. McCloud's addition as a grad transfer addresses the position group on the 2020 Irish roster that has been lad en with the most uncertainty and fewest absolutes since ND clobbered Iowa State, 33-9, in the Camping World Bowl, Dec. 28 in Orlando, Fla.With 37 career games and 21 starts at NC State, he has more experience than any other cornerback on the Irish roster, including sixth-year returnee Shaun Crawford - by 13 games and 10 starts. Six of the existing eight corners on the roster have freshman eligibility, either as redshirts or as true freshmen. McCloud also has length the two projected starters at t he moment, the 5-9 Crawford and 5-11 junior TaRiq Bracy, don't have. And while he doesn't possess the elite speed of say recently graduated track and field moonlighter Pride, McCloud's 20 career pass breakups hint at strong technique. - South Bend Tribun e

Finally, some good news on the injury front for the NC State football team. At least, potentially. Coach Dave Doeren floated the possibility that senior cornerback Nick McCloud, who has been sidelined with a knee injury during the Wolfpack' s season opening victory against East Carolina on Aug. 31, will be ready to play in Saturday's homecoming game against defending national champion Clemson. - SI.com
