Austin Kendall threw for a touchdowns and rushed for another, Greg Garner scored three times and Louisiana Tech edged Southeastern Louisiana 45-42 on Saturday night. However, it took a fumble recovery by Cedric Woods in the final minute to secure the win. Southeast Louisiana quarterback Cole Kelley ran for 16 yards on third-and-10 from his 19 but was stripped by Ezekiel Barnett, although the first down would have been nullified by a penalty.

Garner had back-to-back touchdowns in the third quarter to give the Bulldogs (1-1) 10-point leads in the shootout. The first came when Kendall threw a backwards pass to wide receiver Kyle Maxwell, who threw the ball into the end zone, where Garner hauled it in while being hit. Garner got his second rushing touchdown after the second of Kelley's three TD passes. Kelley was 44 of 59 for 453 yards with two interceptions and scored twice on the ground while leading the Lions (1-1) in rushing with 42 yards. CJ Turner had eight catches for 131 yards. The Lions had 556 total yards but 10 penalties cost them 100 yards and they had three turnovers. Kendall was 20 of 28 for 250 yards. - Louisiana Tech/AP College Football

Louisiana Tech football has announced the addition of three transfers to its roster including quarterback Austin Kendall. Also joining La Tech are running back Keyon Henry-Brooks and cornerback Jacquez Payton. All three have the potential to be starters this season. Kendall is graduate transfer after spending three seasons at Oklahoma before transferring to West Virginia. He appeared in 11 games in two seasons for the Mountaineers, throwing for 2,153 yards and 14 touchdowns. In 2019 he started nine games and had 1,989 yards and 12 touchdowns to rank seventh in the pass-heavy Big 12 in yards per game with 221. He had a decreased role in 2020, completing just 11-of-23 attempts for 164 yards and two touchdowns. - Monroe News Star

West Virginia quarterback Austin Kendall plans to play elsewhere next season. West Virginia football spokesman Mike Montoro confirmed Tuesday that Kendall has put his name into the NCAA’s transfer database. Kendall came on in relief of Jarret Doege in the second half of the Liberty Bowl and threw two touchdown passes to lead the Mountaineers (6-4) to a 24-21 victory over Army. Kendall also appeared in a backup role in the season opener against Eastern Kentucky. Kendall came to West Virginia from Oklahoma as a graduate transfer a year ago and started the first nine games, throwing for 1,989 yards with 12 TDs and 10 interceptions, before Doege finished out the 2019 season. - AP College Football

West Virginia University football is on its way back to campus, and the university announced Friday the process necessary for that to happen. WVU will take a phased approach to bringing football players and staff back to campus for voluntary workouts. The first phase is a two-week period, June 8-22 for coaches and staff and June 15-29 for players. Student-athletes have been away from their campuses since the coronavirus pandemic began in March. Coaching staffs were eventually allowed to hold virtual meetings with their players during the week. The Big 12 announced recently that football players would be permitted to return June 15 for voluntary workouts.

"Phase 1 is the first step to getting Mountaineer football ready for the 2020 season," WVU Athletic Director Shane Lyons said in a university release. "This two-week phased approach enables us to safely get our football staff and players back to campus and will provide the guidance for the return of other student-athletes starting in July. "I want to thank our medical team and department staff who worked endless hours in putting together a plan that puts the safety of our football student-athletes, staff and University first." - Charleston Gazette-Mail

Austin Kendall threw three touchdown passes to lead West Virginia to a 44-27 victory over North Carolina State on Saturday. Kennedy McKoy helped West Virginia's run game break out of a slump with a pair of scores, and the Mountaineers (2-1) had by far their highest offensive production of the season one week after looking lethargic in a 38-7 loss at Missouri. Kendall had first-half TD tosses of 20 and 13 yards. His 25-yard run early in the fourth quarter set up his 9-yard scoring toss to freshman Ali Jennings for a 38-27 lead. Kendall went 27 of 40 for 272 yards with an interception.

West Virginia broke a 21-21 halftime tie with the help of its defense, which had been criticized by the coaching staff for 22 missed tackles a week ago. North Carolina State (2-1) managed just 97 yards of offense in the second half. Sophomore Matthew McKay threw a first-quarter touchdown pass but was harassed all game in his first road start. McKay finished 23 of 48 for 207 yards. He was 9 of 24 for 72 yards after halftime. - AP College Football/West Virginia Football

Austin Kendall loved the outcome but wasn't happy that West Virginia's offense struggled for much of the game against a Championship Subdivision opponent. The Oklahoma graduate transfer threw two second-half touchdown passes in his debut for the Mountaineers, who needed a comeback to hold off James Madison 20-13 Saturday. "We've got to be better as a team, especially me," Kendall said. "We've got to be better on offense."

Kendall couldn't generate a ton of yards under constant pressure but did just enough to give Neal Brown a victory in his first game as West Virginia's coach while preventing the Mountaineers from losing to an FCS opponent for the first time. West Virginia's strengths entering the season were its depth at running back and on the offensive and defensive lines. All of those units underperformed as James Madison dominated the line of scrimmage for a good portion of the game. The Mountaineers averaged just 1.4 yards per rush, leaving it up to Kendall to bail them out. He did - barely. - AP College Football

Oklahoma graduate transfer Austin Kendall has been named West Virginia's starting quarterback for the Aug. 31 season opener against FCS James Madison. West Virginia coach Neal Brown on Tuesday announced the choice of Kendall, who beat out three others. At Oklahoma, Kendall backed up Baker Mayfield in 2016 and Kyler Murray last season. His decision to leave drew intense scrutiny when Oklahoma initially sought to block the move. For his career, Kendall has completed 28 of 39 passes for 265 yards and three touchdowns without an interception. - AP College Football
