Jackson's NFL Draft stock has been seesawing for some time. He generated first-round buzz alongside Tristan Wirfs ahead of the 2019 season, only to see that campaign derailed in a hurry. Jackson suffered a right-knee injury on Iowa's second offensive ser ies of the season, and although he missed just three games, the Detroit product played the rest of the year at less than 100%. A 2020 rebound plus Senior Bowl participation brought back some of that draft buzz, as Jackson was named a first-team all-Big T en selection in starting all eight games at left tackle. But where exactly he'll land on draft weekend remains up in the air. "As far as moving around to other places on the line, I can do it day one (in the NFL), honestly," said Jackson, who worked at s everal other offensive-line positions outside of left tackle at the Senior Bowl. "Training for it every day - you can't be a one-trick pony - so you've got to be able to move around a little but. Someone goes down, you've got to be able to step up. Iowa offensive tackle Alaric Jackson said Monday via Instagram that he will not be returning to the University of Iowa and will prepare for the 2021 NFL Draft. Jackson is a senior who contemplated turning pro after last season. Because of the COVID-19 pa ndemic, all seniors have the option to return to their schools for another season of eligibility. Jackson, wide receivers Brandon Smith and Ihmir Smith-Marsette and kicker Keith Duncan all have said they will move on via social media. Linebacker Nick Nie mann is another Iowa senior who publicly has said he will try and move on to professional football. - The Gazette

It's five games into this experiment, and Alaric Jackson feels just fine. Not fair to call it an experiment at this point, either. The Iowa offensive tackle seems to be all in with not eating meat. Just ask him about his vegan diet, what he's eating whil e his teammates chow down on steaks, burgers, chicken and everything else at their daily training table at the Hawkeye football complex. "I'm pretty big on pasta, for the most part," Jackson said. "That's the biggest thing I love, pasta. Veggies, tofu, t hings of that nature. But late night, I'll make my own meals. I chose last night potatoes, mushrooms, green peppers, jalapenos. So it kind of goes how it goes, honestly. It's not like there is a (specific) direction." Jackson wanted to be healthier, lose some of his fat as he went into this truncated season, a big one for him, considering his potential to be a high NFL draft pick.His body is noticeably different, though he insists he hasn't necessarily lost weight, just bad weight. He's still lis ted at 6-foot-6 and 315 pounds. "I talked about (defensive end) Chauncey (Golston) earlier in the session here and same story, only a different story, because Chauncey came in here as a skinny kid, and A.J. was a heavy kid," said Iowa Coach Kirk Ferentz. "I've been around linemen for a long time now. It's hard for big guys to lose weight, and he's done an unbelievable job of that. I think he's shown extreme discipline, and we've watched him grow every step of the way, too." Jackson considered entering t he NFL Draft this year but ultimately decided to return. This 2020 Hawkeye offensive line doesn't care about getting love, but it sure would like to move large humans around against their will. That would mean new quarterback Spencer Petras is being protected and Iowa's talented trio of running backs are sprin ging free for big gains. And even though offensive line coach Tim Polasek lost the one guy that could make the highlight reels in Tristan Wirfs, his 2020 group has encouraging, collective potential. "I like this group," Polasek said. "I like the energy. I really like the leadership."Offensive coordinator Brian Ferentz - another coach with expertise on the offensive line - indicated that three players had emerged as starters ahead of the Oct. 24 opener at Purdue: Alaric Jackson at left tackle, Coy Cronk at right tackle and Tyler Linderbaum at center. No wonder: Collectively, that trio has 87 career starts. There's excitement about Jackson, a second-team all-Big Ten pick in 2018 who got hurt in Week 1 last season and never fully recovered. Now, af ter immersing himself in a vegan diet, he's transformed his 6-foot-6, 315-pound frame entering his fourth year in Iowa's starting lineup. Alaric Jackson has gone to a vegan "lifestyle" and certainly looks thinner. "To each his own," said Jackson, who noted he's still packing 320 pounds on his 6-foot-6 frame despite not eating meat. "Nothing's changed, I just lost some body fat, that's all. Just looking forward to the season for the most part." There was a legitimate feeling within the program that Jackson might not return to the field for the Hawkeyes. But the 34-game starter at left tackle is back for Year 4 in Iowa's starting lineup, al though for the first time he'll be protecting the blind-side of a quarterback other than three-year starter Nate Stanley. "I never left or went anywhere. There was no defined choice, whether there was a season or not," Jackson said. "I wasn't going to (c onsider an) opt-out until there was a defined choice.
