UCLA senior running back Demetric Felton announced Sunday afternoon that he will pass up a chance to play for the Bruins next season and will enter the NFL draft. Felton, a former standout at Temecula's Great Oak High, made the announcement on his Twitte r account, writing: "After much thought, prayer, and talking with my parents, I feel it's time to say my goodbyes and start to prepare for the Senior Bowl and the NFL combine. Playing in the NFL has been a dream of mine since I was 7 years old. I look fo rward to taking the next steps in fulfilling that lifelong dream."Although he's a redshirt senior, Felton could have played for UCLA in the 2021 season because the NCAA granted an extra year of eligibility to every player before this season starte d due to the pandemic. He did not play in the Bruins' season-finale against Stanford on Saturday, finishing the season with 668 rushing yards and five touchdowns on 132 carries. He was limited out of the backfield throughout the final three weeks of the season after suffering a leg injury during his 206-yard performance against Arizona on Nov. 28. - Orange County Register

Demetric Felton scored on a 2-yard run with 1:09 left and UCLA rallied after sputtering for most of the second half to beat Arizona State 25-18 Saturday night. The Bruins (3-2) dominated early to go up 17-0, struggled as the Sun Devils (0-2) surged into the lead, then came to life at just the right time. Dorian Thompson-Robinson accounted for two touchdowns and was sharp while engineering the final drive after missing two games due to COVID-19 contact tracing. UCLA moved 75 yards in 11 plays on the driv e, capped when Felton tried to stop at the 1 but was pushed in by the Sun Devils.Jayden Daniels accounted for two touchdowns - the second a 1-yard run with 4 1/2 minutes left - and Tyler Johnson had three sacks for the Sun Devils in their first ga me in a month to COVID-19 issues. Arizona State opened the season in disheartening fashion, allowing two touchdowns in the final three minutes of a 28-27 loss to Southern California. Then the Sun Devils got stuck in COVID-19 limbo. Their Nov. 14 game aga inst California was canceled after several players and coaches, including head coach Herm Edwards, tested positive. The next two games, against Colorado and Utah, also were shelved due to contact tracing issues. - UCLA/AP College Football

UCLA's senior all-purpose back Demetric Felton is ranked seventh in the country in average yards per game (134.3), and had a career-best performance in Saturday's 27-10 victory over Arizona, rushing for 207 yards with a touchdown, which came a week after he rushed for 167 yards in a loss at Oregon. But there was a scary moment in Saturday's game when Felton pulled up on a run late in the fourth quarter and never returned, reaching at his hamstring area. But the good news came Monday when UCLA coach Chip Kelly told reporters during a conference call that Felton is fine and would be practicing in preparation for the Bruins' (2-2) road game at Arizona State (0-1) on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. Kelly went on to talk about how far Felton has come since switching from wide receiver to running back last year, and spoke of his continuing work ethic as one of the reasons for his constant improvement."I think his vision, his ability to keep his shoulders square and make cuts is something he has really worked o n and he's improved on," Kelly said of Felton. "But like anybody, nobody's ever arrived. I don't care if you're Tom Brady or Peyton Manning at the end of his career, I see Tom out here in the off-season in the middle of April working on fundamentals and where his plant foot goes and where his elbow is and his back hip and elbow working in unison together. "So, everybody can improve whether you're Demetric Felton at age 21 or Tom Brady at age 43. So, he (Felton) can improve at all facets and that's what I love about Felt. He continues to work at all aspects; pass catch, pass routes, vision, cuts, tough cuts, all of the things you have to do to be a great running back he'll continue to work on." - Orange County Register

The Bruins boast one of the more dynamic players in the conference in redshirt senior Demetric Felton, who has moved from the slot to running back where he is replacing Joshua Kelley, who went on to the NFL. Felton ran for 206 yards against Arizona, 134 of that in the first half. He pulled up lame after a run in the second half but practiced on Monday according to media sources. Edwards singled out Felton as a serious candidate for conference MVP honors."It feels like we're just opening the seaso n again. It's our first game which all our guys are excited about, to play at home finally. That will be a lot of fun. It's been a long time and so I think everyone is excited about having the opportunity to play against a good UCLA football team. I thin k Chip (Kelly) has done a nice job of creating the type of offense and defense with players that fit his mold of what he wants to do." - Arizona Republic

Demetric Felton Jr. has always been a people-pleaser, the UCLA running back happy to oblige his coach's wishes to position him anywhere on a football field. He's played slot receiver, served as a speedy change-of-pace running back and even filled in as t he every-down back last season when Josh Kelley sat out the opener because of injury. Kelley's move to the Chargers after back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons has created an opening for someone else to get the bulk of the carries for the Bruins in 2020. If gi ven the opportunity, Felton said he intended to, well, run with it. "I'm definitely ready to take on that role," Felton, a redshirt senior, said Wednesday during a videoconference. "This is something that I've been waiting on my whole time at UCLA and no w that it seems like it's that time, I'm ready for it."The question is whether Felton is built to absorb the pounding that comes with running between the tackles 20-plus times a game. At 5 feet 10 and 200 pounds, Felton is a bit smaller than Britt ain Brown, the 6-1, 210-pound graduate transfer from Duke who is the other top candidate to assume Kelley's spot as the top running back. "Brittain's a bigger back, more toward Josh's size," UCLA coach Chip Kelly said recently. "...In the first couple of days we've had him out there, he's impressive." - Los Angeles Times

For the past two seasons, UCLA's leading choice at running back was a walk-on transfer. After putting up back-to-back 1,000-yard rushing seasons, Joshua Kelley was selected in the fourth round by the Chargers in April's NFL draft. While it will be near i mpossible to replace the positivity and leadership Kelley brought to the program, the Bruins will need a new option on the field. Led by receiver-turned-running back Demetric Felton, UCLA will be looking for versatility. Felton will most likely carry the majority of the load this season. As UCLA's second option last year behind Kelley, Felton set a program record with 55 receptions as a running back in his first season in the role. He also set a school record with four scoring plays of 75 yards or more while scoring three different ways for the Bruins. Without Kelley's speed, UCLA will be relying on the redshirt senior's versatility to create different scoring schemes. - Orange County Register
