A two-time captain and veteran starter on Nebraska's offensive line is off to the NFL. Senior Matt Farniok, who played tackle, guard and center during his Husker career, announced he will not use the sixth season granted by the NCAA and instead will turn his attention toward playing professional ball. The 6-foot-6, 335-pound Farniok, a native of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, started 32 games in Lincoln and was the full-time right guard in 2020. He also replaced Cameron Jurgens at times at center and, until this season, was mostly a right tackle. - Lincoln Journal Star

Two-time captain Matt Farniok likes his new position at guard. "The biggest adjustment was everything kind of happens faster," he said. "There's not quite as much space between you and a (defensive) tackle versus you and a D-end, and I enjoy it, personal ly. Everything happens faster, and it's a lot more of a power type of game, which is a lot more fun to me." Like two of the other captains, Farniok sat on the scout team his first year, but then quickly saw time, appearing in seven games and starting fou r games his redshirt freshman year. In those four starts, two were at right tackle and two were at right guard. During his sophomore and junior seasons, he only saw time at right tackle, but, for this season, NU coaches moved him back to right guard. His right tackle replacement, Bryce Benhart, will also be expected to play solid minutes his second year on campus. "He has all the tools and all - everything you need to get the job done," Farniok said of Benhart. "And I mean, especially being a young guy, you just kind of got to build that confidence up and understand that you're there for a reason, you've earned that spot." - Omaha World Herald

At the outset of spring ball, Nebraska planned to give redshirt freshman tackle Bryce Benhart a good, long look at right tackle. The plan was to move senior Matt Farniok from that spot to left guard, giving NU a senior tandem on the left side with Farnio k and left tackle Brenden Jaimes. With most of spring ball scuttled and fewer reps now standing between a young player like Benhart and a potential regular season, though, that plan has changed to some degree. Frost says 'invaluable' player leadership ha s Huskers in a good spot despite coronavirus disruption."Through talking during this time, I think we're going to probably start (Farniok) out at right guard, just expecting there to be a younger player at right tackle potentially," Nebraska coach Scott Frost said. "Having a veteran on the left side with Jaimes and a veteran with Matt on the right side of the line will help whoever's playing left guard and whoever's playing right tackle. "Also, it will give us the ability to move Matt back out to right tackle a lot easier if he's playing on the right side." - Lincoln Journal Star
