Michigan running back Chris Evans officially announced Tuesday he is entering the NFL Draft. Evans already had accepted a spot in the Senior Bowl later this month, so this move was not unexpected. Evans rushed for 1,795 yards and 15 touchdowns during his career that paused for a year while he sat out because of a university suspension over an academic issue. Evans was set to become the lead back in 2019 but instead worked three jobs that year and remained in Ann Arbor. He rejoined the team in 2020 and h ad 16 carries for 73 yards and a touchdown during the abbreviated season. - Detroit News

This is where the 5-11, 216-pound Evans could be the difference-maker. Not only can he run for big yardage, but he adds his pass-catching dimension. "Chris is just different than a standard back," Harbaugh said. "A guy like Chris, who can beat the majori ty of linebackers or safeties he runs a route on and then who can make the play and catch the ball, that adds a little bit different element to where you can start including the running back in a progression for the quarterback of having that ball go to him first or second and be excited about it. "That part is different and really being able to run different types of runs. He's so comfortable in space that the different perimeter-type of stuff, he's not the fastest guy ever, but he plays fast and he's elusive in space. Being able to have a guy who excels outside the tackles helps balance out Zach and Hassan, who are good out there, but they're special inside the box." - Detroit News

The Wolverines return their two top rushers from a season ago, and by all accounts both are healthy again. Expect Charbonnet to get the first crack at first-team reps, but Haskins isn't far behind. He had a strong finish to the 2019 season and could Mich igan a strong 1-2 option here. Evans remains the biggest question mark in the room, having compiled more than 1,700 yards rushing and 14 touchdowns from 2016 to 2018. But he's been out of football for more than 18 months...how quickly can he regain form and acclimate to the Wolverines' spread offense? - Ann Arbor News

Chris Evans described a turbulent nine months as mentally draining, not knowing whether he would be accepted back at the University of Michigan. The junior running back - one who played a prominent role on the Wolverines' offense during the 2017 and 2018 seasons - had been suspended academically by the university in February. While the reason has not been shared publicly, the punishment was severe. Not only was Evans sidelined from the team, he was no longer on scholarship. Money for rent and food began drying up. "I was just sticking to what I know and grinding all the time," Evans said recently. But instead of returning home to Indianapolis, Evans made the choice to stay in Ann Arbor and prove that he was willing to right what went wrong. He wo rked three jobs: As an assistant to an area carpenter in the morning; painting houses, rolling carpet and installing dry wall. Once the clock struck noon, he moved on to Ahmo's Gyros & Deli in Ann Arbor, where he delivered orders, took orders and worked the register and washed dishes. "Literally, unbelievably humble," store owner Majdi Issa told MLive. "Brings a light to the door with him. He became friends with everybody in the store. He was there for people, some of the employees that had some persona l issues in his life, just to be there the shoulder to cry on and (provide) some comfort." - Ann Arbor News

More than 19 months have gone by since Chris Evans last suited up in a Michigan uniform. That streak would have ended this weekend under normal circumstances, but a postponement by the Big Ten has the Wolverines running back wondering when he might play football again. Evans was on hand Saturday for a parent-led protest in Ann Arbor, attended by head coach Jim Harbaugh, hoping to convince the conference to reverse its decision. "Taking it one day at a time," Evans, who's listed at 5-foot-11 and 216 poun ds, said. "Everybody working hard until we hear something new. "Whenever they say we can play, we're ready."While most of his teammates last played on Jan. 1, Evans hasn't played a game in the maize and blue since December 2018. He was suspended b y the university for most of 2019 due to academic reasons; though he's never discussed the details. The Indianapolis, Indiana, native remained in Ann Arbor during that time, helped coach football and tried to stay in shape. "Just trusting the process and getting ready to play, day in and day out," Evans said. "It's going to be tough - me being out, not being able to play football since '18. But I'll be ready to go when the time comes." - Ann Arbor News

While Michigan is set to return a packed running back room this fall, there's one member who stands above the rest when it comes to experience and versatility. Chris Evans, sidelined during the 2019 season due to off-the-field academic issues, is back an d figures to be integral part in the Wolverines' offense. It's a system that relies on quarterback reads, run-pass option tags and spacing the field. And rewards athletic playmakers, like Evans. "I remember being in this conference, seeing Chris play as a freshman and seeing the impact he was able to make early on," Michigan offensive coordinator Josh Gattis said Thursday in a conference call with reporters. "He's got a unique skillset because of his versatility, not just as a runner but his ball skills , which are pretty elite for a guy at his position."Evans doesn't possess breakaway speed, but he does have an innate ability to make defenders miss and break tackles. His 5-foot-11, 216-pound frame made him difficult to take down from 2016 to 201 8, when Evans rushed for 1,722 yards and 14 touchdowns. A former four-star recruit from Indianapolis, Ind., Evans broke onto the scene as a true freshman, rushing for 614 yards and four touchdowns. He followed it up with 685 yards and six touchdowns in 2 017, though with a much larger workload, and became a threat in the passing game when he caught 16 passes for 157 yards and a touchdown. Evans, whose rushing numbers dipped some (423 yards, 4 TDs), followed up with 18 catches for 148 yards and a touchdow n in 2018. - Ann Arbor News

You have probably read about Chris Evans' journey over the last year by now. The Michigan running back was dismissed from the football team last February, the result of a university decision to suspend him for academic misconduct. A reason has never been provided publicly. At the time, Evans owned up to it, writing on social media that he was "going through some academic issues right now" but vowed to return. He since has - Evans was reinstated by the university, and the football team, in January and ex pects to play his senior season for the Wolverines."It's a great feeling that he's back," outgoing Michigan linebacker Khaleke Hudson told reporters last week at the NFL Scouting Combine."Just, like, seeing the things that he went through." Evans shared a home with Hudson and former Michigan linebacker Josh Uche, both of whom got a first-hand look at his life outside of football. And because Evans wasn't on the Michigan football team, he had to find other sources of income. He delivered food arou nd Ann Arbor, took on a job coaching football at nearby Huron High School and continued operating his "CE Stars" 7-on-7 football leagues for kids. All while trying to stay in football shape for his eventual return. "He's loyal, and he cares about the tea m," Hudson said. "He cares about the players. He cares about his family. So, he just didn't want to up and leave. That's the easy way to go out. He'd rather stay and deal with the consequences he had to go through, and come back stronger." - Ann Arbor Ne ws

Michigan running back Chris Evans, suspended a year by the university for academic reasons, will be reinstated for winter term and eligible to play football next year. Evans has not been enrolled at Michigan during his suspension but remained in Ann Arbo r taking online classes and working a restaurant delivery job. Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh said Monday that Evans will be reinstated for the winter term that begins in January and will be able to play football.“My knowledge of the situation is, he had a meeting, a productive meeting, a scheduled meeting to see if he’d be reinstated back into school, and my understanding is that he will be for the winter term, and we will welcome him back to the football team,” Harbaugh said at his weekly ne ws conference. “When he gets back in school he’ll be able to participate fully in football again.” Evans has one year of eligibility remaining. - Detroit News
