In two seasons as a starter and two games this season, Damonte Coxie left a legacy as one of the best receivers in Memphis history. Now he's headed to the next stage of his career. He's the sixth Memphis player to either opt out or take a leave of absence this season. Coxie did not play in the Tigers' win against UCF Saturday and coach Ryan Silverfield said postgame that he was no longer wi th the team. Silverfield added Monday that Coxie told the staff he was leaving during the middle of the week and it was unexpected. Memphis had 703 total yards of offense in its win over UCF, fifth most in school history. The Tigers will turn to receiver s Calvin Austin III, Javon Ivory and Tahj Washington as Brady White's leading options along with tight end Sean Dykes. Memphis played without two key starters against UCF Saturday in leading receiver Damonte Coxie and top cornerback TJ Carter. Following the Tigers' 50-49 win, coach Ryan Silverfield said that Coxie "is not a part of our program right now" and did not elab orate further. He added that Carter was on the sidelines during the game but did not dress. Javon Ivory started in Coxie's place and had four catches for 88 yards and a touchdown. Brady White tied for a career-high six touchdowns, including the go-ahead pass to Calvin Austin III. Coxie, who led the team with 16 receptions entering Saturday, spoke with reporters on Tuesday to discuss the challenges facing the Knights' secondary. He gave no indication that his playing status was in jeopardy for Satu rday's game. But with his departure, the Tigers have now seen six players either opt out or leave the program since preseason camp. Kenneth Gainwell, Coye Fairman and Tim Hart announced they opted out while Silverfield said that La'Andre Thomas and John "Pop" Williams have taken leaves of absence for undisclosed reasons. Coxie, who started every game since his sophomore year, had consecutive 1,000 yard seasons in 2018-19. He and Anthony Miller are the only Tigers to do so in program history. - Memphis C ommercial Appeal

The American Athletic Conference Board of Directors has announced the conference's plan and timeline for the start of athletics competition for the Fall 2020 season. Approval was unanimous after consultation with the conference's COVID-19 Medical Advisor y Group, athletic directors and senior woman administrators. In football, the plan calls for conference competition to begin Sept. 19 and for each of The American's teams to play eight conference games on their originally scheduled dates. Nonconference g ames may be played at the discretion of the individual schools, with the understanding that the opponents will strictly adhere to protocols and standards for testing, pregame, in-game and postgame operations set by The American's Medical Advisory Group. Depending on the need to potentially reschedule regular-season games, The American Football Championship will be played on either Dec. 5, 12 or 19 at the stadium of the regular-season champion. - American Athletic Conference Football
