Shane Buechele, Southern Methodist, Player News

SMU quarterback Shane Buechele will enter the NFL draft, marking the end of a long college career. Buechele helped lead the Mustangs to their first 10-win season in decades. He announced his decision via Twitter on Friday evening. Buechele had one year of eligibility remaining, as the NCAA granted a blanket year of eligibility to all athletes in 2020. Buechele is considered a late-round/priority free agent prospect. - The Dallas Morning News

Shane Buechele threw four touchdown passes, two to Tyler Page, and No. 18 SMU broke away from undermanned Temple 47-23 Saturday. The game was pushed back from its original Thursday date while Temple dealt with virus-related issues. The Owls were missing 15 players who were in COVID-19 protocol. SMU led 20-16 before Buechele connected with Kylen Granson on a 24-yard TD pass on the first play of the fourth quarter. The Mustangs (7-1, 4-1 American Athletic Conference) scored four touchdowns in the first 7 1/2 minutes of the period. Temple (1-4, 1-4) scored on the first play of the game, with wide receiver Randle Jones going 75 yards on a screen pass from Trad Beatty. Page, who came into the game fifth on the Mustangs this year in yards receiving, caught nine passes for 131 yards.

Playing in the slot most of the game, Page took advantage of a soft middle of the Temple defense and then used his speed to rack up most of his yards after making the catch. Buechele was 24 for 35 for 355 yards. Tayvon Ruley's 3-yard touchdown run helped Temple build a 13-10 halftime lead. Buechele put SMU ahead for good when he found Page with a 44-yard strike on the first drive of the second half. In the fourth quarter, Buechele added a 33-yard TD toss to Rashee Rice while Tyler Lavine had a 2-yard touchdown plunge and TaMerik Williams added a 49-yard scoring scamper. - AP College Football

In one week, Shane Buechele went from his worst passer efficiency rating in two seasons at SMU to his best. The Mustangs enjoyed a pretty good bounce-back as well. Buechele threw three touchdown passes, Ulysses Bentley IV and Tyler Lavine ran for two scores apiece and No. 22 SMU rebounded from its first loss with a 51-37 victory over Navy on Saturday night. The Mustangs (6-1, 3-1 American Athletic) scored 30 consecutive points from late in the second quarter to early in the fourth, a run that started with 10 points in the final 7 seconds of the first half. After the first of Buechele's two scoring tosses to Rashee Rice with 7 seconds to go before halftime, Nelson Smith fumbled a handoff and SMU's Gary Wiley won the scramble for the loose ball at the Navy 18 with a second remaining. Chris Naggar's 34-yard field goal made it 31-17. - SMU/AP College Football

Brandon Crossley ended the first overtime possession with an interception and Chris Naggar made a 34-yard field goal to give No. 17 SMU a 37-34 victory over Tulane on Friday night. Crossley intercepted Tulane freshman Michael Pratt's pass to put the Mustangs (5-0, 3-0 American Athletic) in position to win with the field goal. SMU is 5-0 for the second straight season, a feat it last accomplished in 1983. The Green Wave (2-3, 0-3) rallied to force overtime on Merek Glover's 27-yard field goal with 1:30 left. "We went blow for blow with them," Tulane coach Willie Fritz said. "Unfortunately, they get the last one in. I saw a lot of good things from our guys. Really was impressed with the way we battled and fought back." After Tulane took a 31-27 lead early in the fourth quarter on Pratt's 7-yard touchdown, the Mustangs pulled ahead 34-31 lead on Shane Buechele's 10-yard pass to Danny Gray. Buechele completed 23 of 37 passes for 384 yards and two touchdowns. He entered the game second nationally in passing yards. Rashee Rice had seven receptions for 139 yards and a touchdown, and Gray added five catches for 133 yards and a touchdown and had a 32-yard scoring run. Ulysses Bentley ran for 94 yards and a touchdown on 25 carries. - SMU/AP College Football

Chris Naggar kicked a 43-yard field goal with nine seconds left and SMU beat No. 25 Memphis 30-27 on Saturday, after the Mustangs blew an early three-touchdown lead against a team playing its first game in four weeks. Memphis (1-1), which because of COVID-19 issues hadn't played since winning its opener Sept. 5, was driving for a potential go-ahead score when Brady White was sacked and fumbled with 1:25 left. That set up the final drive for SMU (4-0), which never trailed. Shane Buechele was 32-of-45 passing for 474 yards and three touchdowns. That included catch-and-run scores of 70 and 85 yards to Reggie Roberson before the star receiver left the game with an apparent left knee injury late in the third.

Roberson finished with five catches for 243 yards. White was 29-of-42 for 380 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions. Damonte Coxie had eight catches for 169 yards. Memphis last played a month agao against Arkansas State. The Tigers didn't play their next two scheduled games and had an 11-day gap without practicing because of positive COVID-19 tests in the program. SMU had a 24-3 led after Roberson's 85-yard score early in the second quarter. Buechele stepped up in the pocket and hit Roberson near the 25, where the receiver made a defender miss and then took off down the sideline. - SMU/AP College Football

Shane Buechele threw five touchdown passes, Xavier Jones broke one of Eric Dickerson's school records and No. 23 SMU bounced back from a first loss that dramatically changed the course of its season, outscoring East Carolina 59-51 on Saturday. The Mustangs (9-1, 5-1 American Athletic) played from ahead and kept it that way in a second straight game with more than 1,000 combined yards. SMU had fallen behind and failed to close the gap last week in a 54-48 loss to No. 19 Memphis.

Kylen Granson caught three touchdowns, including a 31-yarder on fourth-and-20 with SMU leading 45-44 midway through the fourth quarter. Granson had 138 yards on seven receptions, while James Proche finished with 14 catches for 167 yards. On the ensuing kickoff, East Carolina's Jsi Hatfield couldn't pick up the loose ball around his 15-yard line and SMU recovered. That led to Proche's second touchdown catch. Proche, a senior, had broken Emmanuel Sanders' school record with his 35th career touchdown catch on his first score of the day. Buechele threw for 414 yards as the Mustangs finished with 636 total yards to 644 for the Pirates (3-7, 0-6). - AP College Football

SMU quarterback Shane Buechele and leading tackler Richard McBryde were on Top 25 teams before joining the Mustangs this season. The former Texas starting quarterback and the linebacker who played for Auburn in the SEC championship game two seasons ago will now be part of SMU's first game as a ranked team in 33 years. The No. 24 Mustangs (5-0, 1-0 American) are home against Tulsa on Saturday night. “There's been some rough seasons around here through the years. There's also been some good ones,” second-year coach Sonny Dykes said. “Winning helps, but you've got to win consistently, and I think sometimes it may be a little slower process than people want it to be.” SMU quarterback Shane Buechele and leading tackler Richard McBryde were on Top 25 teams before joining the Mustangs this season.

Dykes said there are 65 new players, including scholarship freshmen, walk-ons and transfers.   SMU's appearance in the rankings is historic, considering where that program has been. After returning from the death penalty in 1989, the Mustangs managed one winning season (6-5 in 1997) over the next 20 years. The program had an uptick under June Jones from 2009-12, going to four straight bowl games and topping out at eight victories. There has been only one winning season since. Under second-year coach Sonny Dykes, the Mustangs are playing their best ball since the Pony Express days of Eric Dickerson and Craig James in the early 1980s. SMU is not a national championship contender, but the Mustangs head into the second month of the season looking like a team that should push for an American Athletic Conference crown. The Mustangs (5-0) are off to their best overall start since 1983, are 3-0 on the road and 10-4 in their last 14 games overall. - AP College Football

While SMU coach Sonny Dykes and new quarterback Shane Buechele are focused on this season, they do understand the historical context of a win over longtime rival TCU that has the Mustangs 4-0 for the first time since 1984. That was back in the old Southwest Conference days, only a few years from crippling sanctions that kept the Mustangs from even fielding a team in 1987 and 1988 after the NCAA's so-called death penalty. "I haven't been here 35 years. It's a big deal for our fans, and I get it," said Dykes, in his second season on the Hilltop after being an offensive analyst at TCU. "I don't try to get caught up in all of that stuff during the season, just because I think it's a bit of a distraction...Look, I appreciate winning."

Shane Buechele was 23-of-34 passing for 288 yards with two touchdowns and ran for another score as SMU held on to beat the 25th-ranked Horned Frogs 41-38 on Saturday, ending a seven-game losing streak in the 99th meeting between the schools. "It's important for our fans to stay behind us. It's really important for those guys to have our back," said Buechele, the former Texas quarterback who is one of SMU's seven graduate transfers. "We have their back. We need to roll together as a team." The Mustangs went ahead to stay after jumping ahead 15-0 in less than 10 minutes. They held on after true freshman Max Duggan's third touchdown pass of the second half for TCU with 3:37 left. - SMU/AP College Football
