"He's off to a really positive start." Bailey shared the award with Kansas State's Jahron McPherson, who had 11 tackles and a forced fumble and an interception in the Wildcats' win over Oklahoma. - Des Moines Register

It happened on the game's first series, when the redshirt senior was credited with a half-sack. That gave him 19, with at least 10 games left to add to it, and he did just that on TCU's next possession - and this time, he wasn't sharing. The record's bee n a long-time coming for the personable Floridian. He entered last season tied, but suffered a season-ending leg injury at Baylor in Game No. 4. Among his 3 1/2 sacks Saturday the defensive trifecta - he sacked the quarterback with so much force that he fumbled. Who but JaQuan Bailey, of course. "We had great coverage on the back end, which enabled us to get to the quarterback," the humble Bailey said. "It was a boom-boom play. I was focused on closing out of it." And topping off the wonderful play by j umping on the loose ball? "The play just kind of happened," he said. - Des Moines Register

Breece Hall ran for 154 yards and three touchdowns, JaQuan Bailey had 3 1/2 sacks to become Iowa State's career leader and the Cyclones opened Big 12 play with a 37-34 win at TCU on Saturday. Bailey's strip sack and recovered fumble just before halftime set up Brock Purdy's 17-yard touchdown pass to Darren Wilson for the Cyclones (1-1), who bounced back from a 17-point home loss to Louisiana-Lafayette in their opener two weeks ago.Max Duggan threw three touchdowns after halftime for TCU, but line backer Mike Rose made a diving interception - grabbing the ball only inches off the ground - with less than four minutes left. The pass went through the hands and off the knee of Taye Barber, who had an earlier touchdown catch. That set up a 32-yard TD r un by Hall on third-and-2 with 2:54 left that made it 37-28. The sophomore ran basically untouched 75 yards to open the scoring in the second quarter, and had a 1-yard score earlier in the fourth when he leaped high in the air over the line and came down on his feet in the end zone. - AP College Football

JaQuan Bailey is back at full-go after suffering a season-ending leg injury in Game No. 4 at Baylor in 2019. We heard how good he looked during voluntary workouts. We heard the same when contact work started. And Wednesday, he was announced as a starter. He didn't have to return for another senior season. He could have rehabbed, then tried to get into an NFL camp. He came back, however, and now he's listed as a starter. "He's been working very hard," cornerback Anthony Johnson said. "He's going to open a lot of eyes that closed." Bailey was forced to watch what could have been the final nine games of his college career last season. His Iowa State days could have been over, and no one would have blamed him if he chose to move on.Bailey not only r eturned for a second senior season, but he also was one of three Cyclones on the media's 2020 all-Big 12 Conference preseason team. Some eyes may have been closed, but he at least left an impression on voting members of the press. He returns where he lef t off last season - one sack (or even a half-sack) shy of breaking the school's career record. He's No. 2 on the list of active FBS players - behind Miami of Florida's Quincy Roche (26) and Western Kentucky's DeAngelo Malone (19). His 31 ½ career tackle s for loss is fifth in Iowa State history. His 37 career starts shares fourth in school history. - Des Moines Register

If any Iowa State football player has grown more than the Florida native, please provide examples. Between his freshman and sophomore seasons, Iowa State coach Matt Campbell even said "it looked like he had a tire under his tummy. Now, he looks like a st atue of what a defensive end should look like - the tire's gone." Campbell relayed that at last year's Big 12 Media Days - and Bailey didn't disagree with that assessment. "I was probably 20 pounds overweight," he said, shaking his head in bewilderment t hat he'd even let his body go that way. "I didn't take my nutrition seriously until after my freshman year." Bailey starts the season with 18 1/2 sacks - the same way he started the last time he prepared for a season-opening game. He played all right aga inst Northern Iowa, Iowa and Lousiana-Monroe.He went down in the conference opener at Baylor - his 37th career start in a row. And now he's back, full throttle and ready to finally own that record outright. "He's come back in the best shape I've s een him in; he's in the best shape of his life," Campbell said last week. "He worked tremendously hard over the last three months while he was at home in Jacksonville." He's added muscle and structure to his 6-foot-2, 261-pound frame. He's got a fresh ou tlook after missing the last nine games of 2019 and the 2020 spring. He's way removed and far more mature than the JaQuan Bailey who made a boneheaded play against Texas when he was a sophomore. "I will never, ever forget that play," Bailey told me last season. "A lot has happened since then. I'm a totally a different person. I'm a totally a different player." - Des Moines Register

The heart of the Cyclones' defense the last few years is gone. Ray Lima helped ISU implement a defensive scheme that was replicated across the country, and the nose guard is off to pursue a pro career. So is Jamahl Johnson, an underrated third-down stopp er, who played as a true freshman in coach Matt Campbell's first season. Defensive end Matt Leo has graduated, too. So who is going to carry this group going forward? Perhaps the player with the most responsibility is one that ISU wasn't counting on havi ng in 2020. Defensive end JaQuan Bailey was robbed of his senior season due to a lower leg injury, but secured a redshirt and will be back for a fifth season. It was a gift ISU wasn't expecting - he has 37 career starts and will likely produce the best s ack numbers in school history when he's done - but it also adds a couple hurdles for the Cyclones in terms of lineups and rotations. - Ames Tribune
