On March 27, Bernard and a handful of other prospects, including Utes teammate and projected second-day selection Bradlee Anae, were at All-American Park in Las Vegas to run the 40, 20-yard shuttle and the L drill. The event was timed by Zybek Timing and CEO Mike Weinstein, which is important for two reasons. One, Zybek has the clout of doing the timing for the NFL Scouting Combine. Two, Zybek does laser timing, so even without the Combine spotlight, a time produced by Zybek will be taken seriously by N FL personnel, who were not allowed to attend. Bernard made up for his 4.81 at the Combine by running 4.65 in Vegas. "I definitely feel relieved about it," Bernard said. "I wanted to reassure people I am not a 4.8 guy, and you could already see that on fi lm."On April 8, in a workout run by Jordan Pendleton of Lehi-based Pendleton Performance, Bernard did positional drills at Summit Academy's Bluffdale campus. Five days later, LaBoy emailed a Vimeo link with 28 videos of Bernard working out to roug hly 150 NFL personnel, general managers, college scouting directors and area scouts. Things haven't been easy, but the end result appears to have been fruitful. After meeting with 17 teams at the Combine, Bernard has met with 14 via video conferencing. M ost reputable projections have Bernard as a third-day selection, potentially as high as the middle of the fourth round. "I feel good about the feedback from teams and my agent, so I'm feeling pretty confident about the draft," Bernard said. "Some of the feedback has said late third round, so I'm just hoping more teams see me. The projections vary all over the place. "I left everything out there and I think I check off a lot of boxes. It's up to the teams to like me or not." - Salt Lake Tribune

Before the NFL stepped in on pro days and made up everyone's mind for them, those represented more of a gray area. The showcase for Utah's NFL-bound prospects did not fall within any Pac-12 mandate for cancelation, and it did not include current Utah stu dent-athletes. Still, with the American sports scene barren, cancelation was the only reasonable course of action. "It makes sense because you'd have 32 teams flying in and you don't want all those people to get together in one place," former All-Pac-12 Utah linebacker Francis Bernard told The Salt Lake Tribune Thursday morning from his training base in San Diego, in between the Pac-12 and Utah announcements. "My agent and I have been discussing maybe doing a private workout. It would be easy to get a C hargers scout in there, take the information or the results and spread it to other teams."Bernard's point about a private workout at some point in the six weeks before the NFL Draft is valid, but someone in his position could have benefit from wor king out in front of a wider audience. One of a program-record nine Utes invited to the NFL Scouting Combine, Bernard tweaked his hamstring before the 40-yard dash. He tried to push through it, but wound up running a 4.81 at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianap olis. That mark stood as the sixth-slowest among the 30 linebackers who ran the 40 at the Combine. "I'm not a 4.8 guy," Bernard said. "I hurt my hamstring during the jumps before the 40, but I was in the moment and felt like running. I thought I could ri de the adrenaline, but I unfortunately didn't. I'm looking forward to really showing what I can do." - Salt Lake Tribune
