2019 PAC-12 PAT TILLMAN DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR (COACHES): Evan Weaver, California,...Weaver, a senior from Spokane, Wash., led the nation in tackles with a school-record 173 (14.4 per game), breaking Cal's 34-year-old single-season record of 167 se t by Hardy Nickerson in 1985. He twice posted 22 tackles in a game this season (at Ole Miss, at Utah). Thanks in large part to Weaver, Cal was fourth in total defense (385.5 ypg) and fourth in rushing defense (122.9 ypg). Evan Weaver has keyed California's stingy defense with his disruptive play. The linebacker leads the Pac-12 with 105 tackles, which include 7.5 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks. He is coming off a 21-tackle performance against Oregon State. Weaver is the o nly FBS player to finish with at least 18 tackles in three games this season. Chase Garbers threw for four touchdowns, but No. 23 California needed a game-saving tackle at the 1-yard line from linebacker Evan Weaver on the game's final play to defeat Mississippi 28-20 on Saturday. Cal (4-0) was in control until the final six minut es, when reserve quarterback John Rhys Plumlee led Ole Miss (2-2) on a late rally to wipe out a 28-13 deficit. Plumlee was stopped by Weaver for no gain on fourth down at the 1-yard line as time expired. Garbers completed 23 of 35 passes for 357 yards, i ncluding TDs of 9 and 60 yards to Jordan Duncan and Jake Tonges on the opening two possessions of the third quarter, setting up the late defensive heroics.The Rebels got strong performances from quarterbacks Matt Corral and Plumlee, who led the fi nal two possessions. Corral had a 1-yard scoring run and was 22-of-41 passing for 266 yards before leaving with a rib injury. The Rebels had 525 yards of total offense but failed on two scoring opportunities with missed field goals. Plumlee went 7 of 7 f or 82 yards in the final six minutes. Jerrion Ealy scored on a 15-yard run with 4:29 left to cap Plumlee's first series. California and Arizona State moved into the AP Top 25 college football poll to give the Pac-12 six ranked teams, the most for the conference in almost four years. A weekend filled with blowouts left the top half of the AP media poll presented by Regions Bank mostly unchanged. Clemson remains No. 1, with 57 of the 62 first-place votes, as the top nine held their spots Sunday. Alabama was No. 2, receiving five first-place votes, followed by Georgia, LSU, Oklahoma, Ohio State, Notre Dame, Auburn and Florid a. The ninth-ranked Gators were the only top-10 team to play a competitive game. The others won by a combined 428-97. Utah, the highest ranked Pac-12 team, moved up to No. 10.
