2020 NFL COMBINE INVITE: Dante Olson, ILB, Montana,...Olson will join 336 other prospects at this year's combine, all looking to make their NFL dreams come true. Workouts begin on Thursday, Feb. 27, with tight ends, quarterbacks and wideouts. Olson is se t to compete with fellow linebackers and defensive lineman on Saturday, Feb. 29. One of 44 linebackers to receive an invite to the combine, Olson is the only player at that position from the FCS ranks to receive an invite, and one of just 12 players from the subdivision to book a trip to Indy. The only other player from the Big Sky Conference to receive an invite was Portland State tight end Charlie Taumoepeau. Since earning his degree from UM in December, Olson has been living in Northern California tr aining for his combine opportunity. He is the first Grizzly since Zack Wagenmann in 2015 to compete at the combine. - Montana Football

Montana linebacker Dante Olson has taken home virtually every award an FCS football player can earn after leading the subdivision in tackles for a second-straight season with an eyewatering 179 stops as a senior. A consensus All-American, he's already earned Montana's Steve Carlson team MVP award, the Big Sky's Defensive Player of the Year award, Phil Steele Magazine's Big Sky Defensive Player of the Year, and the FCS Athletic Directors Association Defensive MVP. That's not to mention the prestigious awards he's taken home for his work off the field as a National Football Foundation National Scholar-Athlete and William V. Campbell Trophy Finalist and a member of the 2019 Allstate AFCA Good Works Te am.Olson cemented his place in Grizzly history as a Buchanan Award winner by beating out a field of 26 semifinalists, including Ron'Dell Carter of James Madison and Sully Laiche of Nicholls, both defensive ends. Illinois State running back James Robinson and Montana linebacker Dante Olson headline the 2019 AFCA Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) Coaches' All-America Team announced today by the American Football Coaches Association. The AFCA has selected an All-America team since 1945 and currently selects teams in all five of its divisions. What makes these teams so special is that they are the only ones chosen exclusively by the men who know the players the best — the coaches themselves. Robinson led th e Missouri Valley Football Conference in rushing yards (1,917), yards per game (127.8) and touchdowns (18). He recorded eight 100-plus yard rushing efforts, including a school-record breaking 297-yard effort in the first-round at Southeast Missouri State . After leading the FCS in tackles for two-straight seasons, Olson repeated as an AFCA All-American after breaking the Big Sky record for tackles in a season with 179. In just two seasons as a starter, Olson became Montana's all-time leader in tackles wi th 397 stops. 2019 ALL-BIG SKY CONFERENCE FIRST TEAM (COACHES): Inside Linebacker Dante Olson, Senior, Montana,...Olson, who started the year as the league's Preseason Defensive MVP, lived up to the hype in 2019 once again leading the FCS in total tackles. To get ther e, he posted double-digit tackles in eight of Montana's 12 games, including a season-high 18 stops against Montana State and Idaho State and a game-high 14 against the Oregon Ducks. Not only were his 151 tackles the best in the league and FCS, they are t he second-most in all of D-I football to date after California's Evan Weaver, who currently leads the nation with 164 stops. Combined with his junior season total of 151, Olson now has 302 tackles in 23 games as a two-year starter (an average of 13.1 per game), bringing his career total to 369, just 25 shy of breaking Montana's all-time record of 393 set by Vince Huntsberger (1998-2001). - Montana Football

The Montana Grizzlies officially returned to the FCS Playoffs for the first time since 2015 on Sunday with the FCS Selection Committee seeding UM at No. 6 to give the Griz a first-round bye. Montana (9-3, 6-2 BSC) will now host a second-round matchup aga inst the winner of the Southeast Louisiana (7-4) vs Villanova (9-3) first round-game on Dec. 7 in Missoula. Kickoff for the second-round contest at Washington-Grizzly Stadium is set for 1 p.m. The game will be streamed nationwide on ESPN 3. The selection extends Montana's FCS record playoff appearance total to 24 seasons.Montana is one of four teams from the Big Sky Conference to earn a seed in the FCS Playoffs, with conference co-champion Weber State earning the third seed, Sacramento State taki ng the fourth seed, and Montana State earing the fifth seed. Should Montana win its second-round contest against Southeast Louisiana or Villanova, the Grizzlies will advance in the bracket to face the winner of Weber State's second round game. Three seniors from FCS schools were named Wednesday among the 12 finalists for the William V. Campbell Trophy, which recognizes the best football scholar-athlete in the nation. Eastern Washington center Spencer Blackburn, Montana linebacker Dante Olson a nd Cornell safety Jelani Taylor were chosen out of 185 semifinalists from NCAA Division I, II and III programs as well as NAIA members.The Campbell Trophy, known as the "Academic Heisman," and awarded by the National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame, is named in honor of the former player and head coach at Columbia University. A candidate must be a senior or graduate student in his final season of eligibility and have a GPA of at least 3.2 on a 4.0 scale. He also must have outstanding f ootball ability and display strong leadership and citizenship. Each finalist receives an $18,000 postgraduate scholarship. The overall winner will be announced Dec. 10 at the NFF Annual Awards Dinner in New York and will have his postgraduate scholarship increased to $25,000. - AP College Football

Archrivals Montana and Montana State aren't fond of sharing with each other, but they had to give some elbow room in the STATS FCS Top 25 on Monday. The two 4-1 teams both appeared in the Top 10 of the national media poll for the first time in nearly fiv e years. Montana State moved up one spot to No. 6 and Montana 10 spots to No. 8 - their first tag-team of the Top 10 since Oct. 20, 2014, although in between both made separate appearances.Each posted a rousing win in its Big Sky opener on Saturda y. Montana State overcame a 21-0 deficit in the second quarter to power past Northern Arizona 49-31. Montana allowed a similar comeback to UC Davis last season, but this year, the Grizzlies never trailed against the then-No. 4 Aggies in winning 45-20. Th e top three spots in the rankings didn't change. North Dakota State, James Madison and South Dakota State have held 1, 2 and 3, respectively, since the preseason.
