2019 WUERFFEL TROPHY WINNER: Western Michigan senior quarterback Jon Wassink has been named the recipient of the Wuerffel Trophy, presented by the Chick-fil-A Foundation, according to an announcement by the organization Tuesday. The Wuerffel Trophy, know n as college football's premier award for community service, is presented annually to the Football Bowl Subdivision player who best combines exemplary community service with athletic and academic achievement. Named after 1996 Heisman Trophy winning quart erback Danny Wuerffel from the University of Florida, the Wuerffel Trophy has honored over 1,200 nominees since its inception in 2005.Wassink, a native of Grand Rapids, Mich., joins Tim Hiller (2009) as Western Michigan recipients of the Wuerffel Trophy. WMU joins Oklahoma as the only two programs in the country to have multiple winners. The Broncos are also the only Mid-American Conference program to have a Wuerffel Trophy recipient. Wassink has received numerous accolades this fall, including b eing named one of 12 National Football Foundation National Scholar-Athletes, presented by Fidelity Investments. The honor makes him a finalist for the William V. Campbell Trophy Presented by Mazda. 2019 ALL-MID-AMERICAN CONFERENCE THIRD TEAM (COACHES): Quarterback - Jon Wassink, Western Michigan,...Wassink, who remained healthy for the entire regular season for the first time in his career, has completed 222-of-371 passes for 2,904 yards and 19 tou chdowns against just seven interceptions. A native of Grand Rapids, Mich., he has already been named a National Football Foundation National Scholar-Athlete Award recipient as well as a finalist for the Wuerffel Trophy and Senior CLASS Award. He is also a CoSIDA Academic All-District 5 First Team honoree. Jon Wassink threw a pair of second-quarter touchdown passes to Keith Mixon Jr. and LeVante Bellamy ran for two fourth-quarter scores as Western Michigan beat Miami of Ohio for the seventh straight time, 38-16 in a Mid-America Conference battle Saturday a fternoon. The Broncos now have won every meeting with the RedHawks since 2006. Sam Sloman put Miami in front in the first quarter, converting field goals from 51-and 49-yards out, but with the RedHawks driving, Western Michigan's Drake Spears jumped a pa ss route in the Miami backfield and raced 74 yards untouched for the touchdown to put Western Michigan (4-3, 2-1) in front, 7-6 in the second quarter. Wassink hit Mixon with scoring passes of 46- and 37-yards in the second quarter and the Broncos led 21- 6 at intermission.Sloman converted from 27-yards out and Jaylon Bester capped a 59-yard drive with a 3-yard run to pull Miami within a touchdown, 21-16 to start the fourth quarter, but Bellamy put the game away by sandwiching runs o f17- and 47-ya rds around a Thiago Kapps 24-yard field goal. Bellamy finished with 22 carries for 135 yards and Mixon had three catches for 84. Brett Gabbert, younger brother of Tampa Bay quarterback Blaine Gabbert and the first true freshman to start the season as the RedHawks quarterback in school history, finished completing 26 of 45 for 260 yards for Miami, but also threw three interceptions. - Western Michigan/AP College Football

WEEK 1 MAC WEST DIVISION CO-OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Western Michigan QB Jon Wassink,...Western Michigan senior quarterback Jon Wassink (Grand Rapids, Mich.) completed 20-of-25 passes for 368 yards and five touchdowns in a 48-13 win over Monmouth. W assink completed his first eight passes and did not throw an incompletion until 11:07 in the second quarter. He completed 10 passes of 15+ yards and five of 30+ yards.Wassink's five TD passes tied his career high, matching his five against Miami o n September 29, 2018, and five at Buffalo on October 7, 2017. Wassink's five touchdown passes were tied for the fourth most in a game in program history. His 368 passing yards gave him three career games with 300+ yards and surpassing 300 for second con secutive season opener after throwing for 379 versus Syracuse on August 31, 2018. Jon Wassink matched his career high by throwing five touchdown passes as Western Michigan dominated Monmouth 48-13 in the season opener for both teams on Saturday night. Wassink, who threw for 368 yards with no interceptions, was 11-of-15 for 226 yards a nd three scores in the first half. This was his third game with over 300 yards passing. DaShon Bussell had three catches for 100 yards after two quarters, finishing with 116 yards receiving. Giovanni Ricci had five receptions for 97 yards and two TDs in this first meeting between the teams. The Broncos struck early and often, claiming a 21-0 lead after one quarter and going up 31-7 at the break. Thiago Kapps added two field goals to go with his six extra-point kicks to total 12 points. Monmouth's Pete G uerriero carried 23 times for 107 yards and a touchdown. Kenji Bahar was 26-of-41 passing for 194 yards and a score. - AP College Football
