Parnell Motley, Oklahoma, Player News

From his senior season through the pre-draft process, Parnell Motley kept a quasi-checklist to further his football career beyond college. Motley, the 6-foot, 180-pound Oklahoma cornerback, wanted better game footage to show NFL scouts during his final O U season. "I wanted to display the best version of myself leaving out of collegiate football," Motley told reporters following his pro day, "and I most certainly did that." More specifically, he wanted to show a more physicality and said his coaches help ed him achieve that with fine-tuning his technique. And while he didn't receive an NFL combine invitation, he felt his OU pro-day performance was solid."Overall, I'd give it about a B," Motley said. "Could have been better. A little rusty in some areas and things like that. A B+ or a B. Always want to be great in everything you do." Motley admits his disappointment with missing the combine. He was grateful to have a final chance to showcase his talents, however, especially with the Sooners' pro d ay happening the day before the sports world shut down amid the coronavirus pandemic. Had he not tested in front of NFL scouts when he did, Motley would likely have more worries this weekend. - Norman Transcript

Parnell Motley admitted to a cluster of reporters that he didn't really even like combine-style testing. But he didn't have a choice. "I just did it because that was a big question mark for me," the former Oklahoma cornerback said. "I'm just a football g uy … [I'm] glad this is over and I can push this to the side and can get back to the basics." All indications are Motley took big strides his senior year at OU. That didn't do him much good when he was left empty-handed after NFL Combine invitations we re mailed out. There was one remaining chance to impress scouts, and for Motley, Oklahoma's pro day last week arrived just in the nick of time. "That's why there are days like this," he said, "for people like us." A few hours after he finished his workou t at OU's Everest Indoor Training Center, concerns over the COVID-19 pandemic began casting sports into its current dormancy. Two days later, pro days at universities across the country were being canceled. The NFL has banned in-person scouting. When and how the league draft takes place isn't totally certain, but scouts have a bigger file on Motley now. Before, his 40-yard dash was the biggest question mark among his tests. Motley ran a 4.50 that was as good or better than 12 of the 29 defensive b acks who ran 40s at the NFL Combine. "That's what I wanted. I hit it," Motley said, giving himself a "B or B+" grade overall. "I'm a press-man corner. I love to press, love to challenge the guy in front of me," he said. "Anybody can play zone and just si t there. It's hard to press that guy right in front of you. That's what I worked the most on. "That's mostly what teams are going to be looking for is press-man corners that are aggressive. If you're looking for them, I'm here." - Norman Transcript

Iowa State coach Matt Campbell saw an opportunity to seize a win that would boost the Cyclones' chances of reaching the Big 12 title game, so he put everything on quarterback Brock Purdy. His gamble failed. Parnell Motley intercepted Purdy's two-point co nversion pass with 24 seconds left, and No. 9 Oklahoma held off Iowa State 42-41 on Saturday night. And now, Iowa State's conference title hopes are bleak. Campbell went for the victory on the two-point try after Charlie Kolar caught a 13-yard touchdown pass to pull the Cyclones - down 42-21 in the second half - within one. Campbell said he didn't regret going for two because Purdy already had passed for 282 yards and five touchdowns and rushed for 55 yards and another score."When I see Brock Pur dy making unbelievable play after unbelievable play, I'd rather put the game in his hands because I trust him," Campbell said. "Yeah, the question if I would do it over again -- yes, in a heartbeat." The Cyclones accelerated their revival two years ago w ith a 38-31 win on the same field. Campbell almost pulled off another stunner. "I thought we had a guy open for a second," he said of the two-point conversion. "We look like we had a chance to catch the ball, but the guy intercepted it at the end of it. Credit to them, they made the great play at the end." Jalen Hurts passed for 273 yards and three touchdowns and ran for 68 yards and two more scores for the Sooners (8-1, 5-1 Big 12, No. 9 CFP). - Oklahoma/AP College Football
