So many saw this opportunity for Javon Kinlaw, but he had to trust himself before it could become reality. It's here. Kinlaw was the 14th player selected in the first round of the NFL Draft on Thursday by the San Francisco 49ers, completing his journey f rom a homeless child on the streets of Washington, D.C., to a multi-millionaire professional football player. Kinlaw's contract will be finalized in the coming days, but last year's 14th pick, Atlanta Falcons guard Chris Lindstrom, signed a four-year, $1 4.6 million deal, including an $8.6 million signing bonus. Kinlaw also signed an endorsement deal with Gillette just before the draft. The 6-6, 310-pound defensive lineman was once a teenager who took a Greyhound bus from Washington to Goose Creek, seeking a fresh start. He turned into an All-American at South Carolina, and an addition to an exclusive club. Kinlaw is the 14th first-round NFL Draft pick from USC in its history. He is the first since Hayden Hurst went to Baltimore with the 25th pick in 2018. "I think in life, sometimes a young man just needs an opportunity, just needs somebody to believe in him," USC coach Will Muschamp said of Kinlaw. "It's an unbelievable story, really, it is. That's a young man who's been put in some tough situa tions and continued to fight, to persevere. He's an example to us all." - Rock Hill Herald

Kinlaw is extremely explosive with incredibly powerful hands that enable him to completely overwhelm offensive linemen at the point of contact. Along with their power, his hands are very active and he often sequences between multiple moves to beat offens ive linemen (above clip). Kinlaw stacks 300-pound linemen along the line of scrimmage like they're Lego pieces, using his power to create knock-back on contact and his length to create separation for him to escape blocks. This ability sets him up well to have success between the B-gaps in the NFL. Kinlaw has all the traits you want in a defensive tackle: size, power, burst and elevated hand technique.Unfortunately, inconsistent and inefficient footwork often limited his production in college and will need to be cleaned up. He struggles with consistency against double-teams, which is a big reason why he'd be a better 3-technique than 1-technique defensive tackle. Cowboys defensive line coach Jim Tomsula is exactly the kind of coach teams should w ant to pair with Kinlaw, as Tomsula has a proven track record of improving defensive linemen's footwork, leverage and pad level. Kinlaw also has some injury questions -- a pesky knee injury bothered him throughout the 2019 season and ended his Senior Bow l week early. Nonetheless, there's no question that although Brown may be rated higher, Kinlaw is the interior defender with the most potential in this class. - Dallas Morning News

Javon Kinlaw's motivation comes from his past, having lived at times without running water or electricity. Those humble beginnings drive the South Carolina defensive tackle to play with a different kind of aggression and have helped him become one of the top NFL prospects at this week's Senior Bowl. He is trying to cement his status as a first-rounder and perhaps even a top 10 draft pick. Kinlaw has traveled a path from poverty to junior college to the Southeastern Conference to arrive at this point. | | | | |
