Jake Luton, Oregon State, Player News

  03/12/20 - QB Jake LutonrSr/2020, Oregon State, 6-6, 224 (DS#12 QB) + More +

Jake Luton looked sharp as he tossed tight spirals during the Oregon State football pro day. Luton and a good group of former Beavers ran through workouts in front of scouts from all 32 of the NFL teams. "I thought it went really well," Luton, OSU's starting quarterback last fall, said. "It was good. We've practiced going through this script a few times and so I thought we were all on the same page. I was real happy with it." A couple will get picked in the NFL draft in April. Others will get a shot through free agency. Luton and receiver Isaiah Hodgins were present and both players had already participated in the NFL combine. Luton was satisfied with his time at the combine. "I thought it well. It's always interesting when you're going with a bunch of new guys. It was fun," Luton said. "You kind of just got to let it rip and trust that those guys are going to be there. It was fun being with the best of the best. All those real good quarterbacks, getting to hang out with them. So I had a really good time." NFL draft projections have Luton going late rounds or possibly as a free agent. - Gazette Times

Jake Luton passed for 288 yards and four touchdowns, leading Oregon State to a 35-34 victory over Arizona State on Saturday night. Oregon State's defense came up with two second half turnovers, and a key stop on a 2-point conversion attempt to help preserve the win. The Beavers (5-5, 4-3 Pac-12), who won just two games last season, are one victory away from becoming bowl eligible for the first time since 2013. Arizona State (5-5, 2-5) lost its fourth consecutive game after a promising start. The outcome was in doubt until the final seconds. On fourth-and-8 from the Beavers 12-yard line with less than two minutes left, ASU quarterback Jayden Daniels delivered a strike over the middle to Brandon Aiyak for a touchdown.

The Sun Devils elected to go for the 2-point conversion but running back Eno Benjamin had nowhere to go on a pitch left and his desperation heave into the end zone was intercepted by cornerback Nahshon Wright. OSU recovered the onside kick. On fourth-and-2 with 42 seconds left, Luton's pass intended for Trevon Bradford was incomplete, but cornerback Jack Jones was called for pass interference to give the Beavers a first down. Daniels completed 24 of 36 passes for 334 yards and three touchdowns. Aiyuk had 10 catches for 173 yards and score. - Oregon State/AP College Football

Oregon State went into its bye week looking for ways to exploit the many holes in Arizona's defense. When the Wildcats switched coordinators this week, the Beavers didn't change anything -- and still blew right through them. Jake Luton threw for 328 yards and three touchdowns, Jermar Jefferson ran for three more scores and Oregon State sliced through Arizona's listless defense for a 56-38 victory on Saturday. "New D coordinator, what's that going to look like and we just looked at the tape, focused on what we do well," Beavers head coach Jonathan Smith said.

Arizona (4-5, 2/3 Pac-12) fired defensive coordinator Marcel Yates this week, replacing him with former NFL assistant coach Chuck Cecil. The coordinator change changed little on the field. Oregon State (4-4, 3-2) manhandled the Wildcats up front while churning out big plays, scoring 35 points by halftime and racking up 572 total yards. Luton finished 20 of 26 and threw two TD passes to Isaiah Hodges, who had seven catches for 150 yards. Grant Gunnell threw for 269 yards and two touchdowns for the Wildcats, who have lost four straight. - Oregon State/AP College Football

Jake Luton threw a career-high five touchdowns passes - including three to Isaiah Hodgins - Artavis Pierce ran for 119 yard and Oregon State defeated UCLA 48-31 Saturday night at the Rose Bowl. Luton completed 18 of 26 passes for 285 yards and added had a rushing score late in the fourth quarter. Two of the touchdown passes came in the first quarter as the Beavers (2-3, 1-1 Pac-12) scored on their first three drives to take a 21-0 lead. Hodgins, who came into the game leading the Pac-12 in receiving yards and second in receptions, had another big game with 10 catches for 123 yards. Hodgins and Luton have now connected for 14 touchdowns in their Oregon State careers.

They opened the scoring 2:43 into the game when Hodgins leapt up and caught a 4-yard TD in front of UCLA cornerback Rayshad Williams. The two connected from 5-yards out midway through the second quarter to extend the Beavers lead to 27-7. Hodgins once again took advantage of Williams in coverage late in the third quarter on a 22-yard touchdown to give Oregon State a 41-24 advantage. Demetric Felton had 166 scrimmage yards for UCLA (1-5, 1-2), which lost for the 14th time in Chip Kelly's 18 games as coach. Felton had 111 yards rushing - including a career-long 75-yard TD in third quarter - and 55 yards receiving. - Oregon State/AP College Football

Jake Luton passed for 255 yards and four touchdowns, leading Oregon State to a 45-7 victory over Cal Poly on Saturday. Luton, who was coming off a subpar performance in last Saturday's 31-28 loss at Hawaii, was on target from the outset against the Mustangs. The sixth-year senior completed 17 of 22 passes. The win snapped a six-game losing streak for the Beavers (1-2) Luton threw all four of his touchdown passes in the first half, including 47- and 75-yard strikes to diminutive wide receiver Champ Flemings. He played one series in the third quarter before giving way to backup quarterback Tristan Gebbia. "We're trying to build some depth and we're heading that way," second-year OSU coach Jonathan Smith said.

The Mustangs (1-2), who lost 41-24 last week at Weber State, played a Pac-12 school for the second time in school history. OSU sophomore running back Jermar Jefferson, who came into the game ninth nationally in rushing (127 yards per game), did not play due to a foot injury. B.J. Baylor led the Beavers ground game with 101 yards on seven carries, including a 74-yard scamper in the third quarter. Artavis Pierce got the start and added 90 yards on 12 carries. "It's not new for me," said Pierce, who ran for 84 yards in the first quarter, helping the Beavers build a 21-7 lead. "I always prepare myself the same way every game. When my number is called it's on me and I just felt like I did a good job today and helped the team out." - Oregon State/AP College Football
