After winning a championship at LSU, Patrick Queen will try to help the Ravens accomplish that same goal. The Ravens selected LSU's playmaking linebacker with the 28th pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, filling perhaps their greatest need with the top player on their board at the time of their pick. "This was kind of a no-brainer for us," General Manager Eric DeCosta said. The pick fulfills the expectations of numerous mock drafts that linked Queen to Baltimore. The Ravens have been hit hard at inside lineback er during free agency, losing Pro Bowler C.J. Mosley in 2019. Then both Josh Bynes and Patrick Onwuasor departed in March. Queen is a sideline-to-sideline playmaker who blossomed into a key member of an LSU defense that helped the Tigers win a national c hampionship, in which he was named the Defensive MVP. - BaltimoreRavens.com

Versatility made Patrick Queen a hot commodity that brought a lot of football recruiters to Livonia High. Could versatility be both a blessing and a curse? It was a fair question. Not knowing what position he should or would play in college was confusing for Queen until just before his senior year. "I had no clue where I was going to wind up," Queen said. "I did not know coming out of high school if I was going to be a safety, a linebacker or a running back. LSU liked me at linebacker. Maybe at safety. Other schools wanted me to play running back. I just wanted to play."A visit to Livonia by Dave Aranda, then LSU's new defensive coordinator, and the influence of Quentin Payne, a first-year defensive coordinator at Livonia, made the answer obviou s. What transpired in the spring of 2016 also set the stage for Queen to become a breakout player for the Tigers last fall, the MVP of the national title-game win over Clemson and now a likely first-round pick in the NFL Draft that begins Thursday. "Patr ick Queen … that's my guy," said Payne, now the defensive coordinator at Landry-Walker. "We still talk and text often. I am so proud of everything Pat has done. The program that put together the greatest season in college football history may be on the doorstep of making NFL draft history. The numbers LSU is shooting for: six and 14. Six is the record for No. 1 draft picks, set in 2004 by the Miami Hurricanes wi th the likes of Kellen Winslow, former Saints linebacker Jonathan Vilma and Vince Woolfork. Fourteen is the record for most picks in a modern seven-round draft, also set that year by Ohio State, a number that included the late Will Smith with the 18th pi ck to New Orleans. LSU's records for the NFL draft are four No. 1 picks and nine picks overall. Four Tigers went in the first round in 2007: quarterback JaMarcus Russell with the No. 1 overall pick to Oakland, safety LaRon Landry at No. 6 to Washington, wide receiver Dwayne Bowe at No. 23 to Kansas City and receiver Craig Davis at No. 30 to San Diego (only one other LSU player was drafted that year).Nine Tigers were selected in 2013 and 2014, players like Eric Reid, Kevin Minter, Tyrann Mathieu, Odell Beckham Jr., Jarvis Landry and Trai Turner. This year's class could eclipse them all, led by Heisman Trophy winner Joe Burrow, who stands to join Billy Cannon and Russell as overall No. 1 picks. LSU could have as many as five other players taken in the first round - though that doesn't quite seem likely - and up to 16 players drafted. Again, that may be pushing it, but it is possible. 2019 PRESEASON BUTKUS AWARD WATCH LIST: Patrick Queen, LSU,...Four LSU linebackers - the most of any school in the nation - have been named to the Butkus Award Watch List, the Butkus Foundation announced on Monday. Queen posted 40 tackles in 2018, which included leading the Tigers with nine tackles and a sack for a 22-yard loss in the win over UCF in the Fiesta Bowl. He got his first career start against Alabama and responded with nine tackles, including two for losses. - LSU Football
