Nate Mullen scored on a 1-yard run in overtime after Western Carolina held East Tennessee State to a field goal and the Catamounts defeated the Buccaneers 23-20 on Saturday. After both teams kicked first-quarter field goals, Donnavan Spencer scored on a 44-yard run 1:41 into the second quarter and Western Carolina (3-7, 2-5 Southern Conference) led 10-3 at halftime. Quay Holmes' 4-yard touchdown run was the only scoring in the third an East Tennessee State (2-8, 0-7) pulled even.The Catamounts gr abbed the lead midway through the fourth when Tyrie Adams hooked up with Caleb Ferguson for a 22-yard TD. But the Buccaneers answered with a 14-play, 64-yard drive that took 6+ minutes off the clock and ended with Holmes running it in from 5 yards out wi th 91 seconds left in regulation. Adams completed 16 of 25 passes for 185 yards for Western Carolina. Spencer finished with 124 yards on the ground on 19 carries. Holmes rushed for 166 yards on 36 carries for ETSU. Tyrie Adams threw for 322 yards and three touchdowns, Donnavan Spencer rushed for 137 yards and two scores, and Western Carolina held off VMI 43-35 on Saturday. Spencer's 42-yard touchdown run gave the Catamounts (2-7, 1-5 Southern Conference) a 37-22 le ad with 8:06 remaining in the game. VMI (4-5, 3-3) rallied, first scoring on a 10-yard pass from Reece Udinski to Jakob Herres, then a 62-yard hookup from Udinski to Leroy Thomas. Now leading 37-35, Western Carolina ran out the final 3:10 on the clock. H owever, with 4th-and-1 at the VMI 42 and needing one play to seal the game, Adams threw a 42-yard touchdown pass to Daquan Patten on the final play.Adams and Spencer connected on a 78-yard TD pass and Adams also hit D.J. Thorpe for a 13-yard score for a 14-13 Western Carolina lead after one quarter and the Catamounts went on to lead 20-19 at halftime. Spencer and Patten both went over 100 yards receiving, with 110 yards and 103 yards, respectively. Western Carolina had 539 total yards. Udinski fi nished 23-of-31 passing with two touchdowns and an interception for VMI. Citing a violation of team policies and standards, Western Carolina suspended four players, including starting quarterback Tyrie Adams, for Saturday's game at N.C. State. Adams, the preseason Southern Conference offensive player of the year, was replaced by sophomore Will Jones in the starting lineup. Also suspended were starting left offensive guard Matthew Bair, starting nose tackle Adam Henderson, and reserve defensive lineman Elijah Hall. The suspended players did not travel with the team. 2019 PRESEASON SOUTHERN CONFERENCE OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR (COACHES): Tyrie Adams, QB, R-Sr., Western Carolina,...The Catamounts' Adams was a second-team All-SoCon selection in each of the last two seasons. As a redshirt junior last year, the St. Pe tersburg, Florida, native became just the 11th player in FCS history and the fourth SoCon player to rush for at least 1,000 yards and throw for at least 2,000 in the same season.Adams led the league in rushing at 91.5 yards per game, totaling 1,00 6 on the year, and ran for 10 touchdowns. Adams also went 188-for-300 through the air for 2,417 yards and 16 touchdowns, notching 311.2 yards of total offense per game to rank second in the SoCon and eighth in the FCS.
