The Cardinals stayed at eight, and they went defense. While offensive tackle was a potential target, ultimately GM Steve Keim decided to bolster the other side of the ball, grabbing Clemson linebacker Isaiah Simmons – who can also be deployed as a safety, a blitzer and potentially some slot corner. "This is one of the most unique players I've ever evaluated," Keim said on the "Cardinals Draft Connection" digital show following the pick. "There's very little this guy can't do. "We vowed to fix this defense." The 6-foot-4, 238-pounder can play the deep middle, play in the box and blitz, Keim said. At the Scouting combine in February, Simmons insisted his position wasn't linebacker as much as "defense." He also brought up on his own his ability to cover tight ends - an issue for the Cardinals in 2019, after the team allowed tight ends 96 receptions for 1,148 yards and 16 touchdowns. - AZCardinals.com

Good luck finding anyone more versatile than Isaiah Simmons in the 2020 NFL Draft. The Clemson product lined up all over the field for the Tigers during his college career and was productive at every spot. Linebacker or safety, rushing the passer or covering receivers, Simmons did it all. And he led Clemson in tackles, tackles for loss and sacks as a redshirt junior in 2019 before leaving for the NFL. So where does Simmons feel like the best spot for him is at the next level? Simmons appeared on the Doug Gottlieb Show this week and provided that answer. "I would honestly say the best me is how I was used at Clemson to where it's not really like a set position what I do. It's more of responsibilities," Simmons said. "So just giving me kind of the freedom to bounce around from position to position and just let myself go is honestly what I feel is best. But I also feel like I can lock in at one position and dominate that position as well."

Clemson coach Dabo Swinney got an up-close look at Simmons' versatility throughout Simmons' college career and believes that whichever team drafts Simmons will have an advantage. Drafting Simmons is like having three first-round picks, according to Swinney, because the 6-foot-4, 238-pounder can do so many different things. "Just decide where you want to put him and he'll be great at that," Swinney said. "He dispels the myth that there's not a unicorn. He is one. Have not had a guy like him. Had some guys that could do aspects of his game but not all of that with the size and the speed that he has." - The State

If your defense is in need of repair, the best buys can be found at linebacker. "The strength there (on defense) is the linebackers. I see linebackers as full-time guys," said a long-time NFL scout who interviewed for this draft series on the condition that his name not be used. "It's a better group of linebackers than usual. There are five, six who can play and can play full-time and not just be specialists." The player who can upgrade any defense is Clemson's Isaiah Simmons, a freakish athlete who is not a specialist but positionless. Simmons, who was measured at 6 feet 4 and 238 pounds, ran the 40-yard dash in 4.39 seconds, lifted 225 pounds 20 times and had jumps of 39 inches (vertical) and 132 inches (broad).

At Clemson, Simmons played multiple spots at all levels of the defense, even making a big interception 20 yards down the field in a College Football Playoff semifinal win over Ohio State. Simmons' versatility and impact on the game is similar to the Chargers' 6-2, 215-pound All-Pro safety Derwin James, but Simmons is faster, taller and more than 20 pounds heavier. "I never seen a guy like Simmons," the NFL scout said. Simmons seems to know his value in the current landscape of the game. "The game is no longer a 250-pound linebacker. It's more guys that can run side to side and are able to cover," he said at the combine last month. "The name of the game is stopping tight ends; something has to be done to stop the Travis Kelces or George Kittles out there." - Honolulu Advertiser

"Burrow and Simmons might be the two best that I've ever seen," said the NFL scout, who has studied players for nearly five decades. The Atlantic Coast Conference Defensive Player of the Year lined up at defensive end, linebacker and safety as well as other spots for the Tigers. "It's like getting three first-round draft picks in one," Clemson coach Dabo Swinney said in an Associated Press article after the school's pro day on March 12, the day the sports world came to a halt. But the areas that have the most foundational players aren't at quarterback or linebacker but at wide receiver and the offensive line, especially at the tackle position. "I think this may be the best group of offensive lineman that I've seen," the scout said. "I got three (tackles) in the top 10." The receivers, meanwhile, boast so much talent that Jeremiah said he rated 27 receivers with top-three-round grades. Regardless, there will be talent at every position to satisfy the teams and their fans.

"The draft is what you put into it," the scout said. "People say there are good years and bad years - there are always players out there." But how will the draft turn out with no pro days and team visits? "(You) have to go back to the old drafts, which were better drafts, where they used to be held two weeks after the Senior Bowl and the coaches couldn't get involved. And you didn't have anybody getting excited about running around in their undershorts," the scout said. "People forget what happened in September and October, and they just remember what happened in March. And the problem in March is, they're in shorts." - Honolulu Advertiser

As Clemson's pro day unfolded, NFL head coaches like the Pittsburgh Steelers' Mike Tomlin and the Detroit Lions' Matt Patricia chatted with Clemson's Dabo Swinney. And it never took long, Swinney said, before the Tigers' versatile linebacker Isaiah Simmons came up in those conversations. Simmons, the All-American and Atlantic Coast Conference defensive player of the year, is considered a top-five lock when the NFL draft is held next month. He was the main attractions as representatives from all 32 NFL teams watched at the team's indoor practice facility Thursday.

Simmons, the leader of the nation's sixth best defense last year, showed off his versatility, strength and speed - and why he figures to go very early in next month's draft. "It's like getting three first-round draft picks in one," Swinney said. Simmons was the leader of the country's sixth-best defense, which came a game shy of a second straight national title after a 42-25 loss to LSU in the championship game two months ago. That did not dim Simmons' dominance in the eyes of the NFL. He lined up at several different spots last season, including safety, defensive end and linebacker, and led Clemson with 107 tackles, 16 stops behind the line of scrimmage, eight sacks and 10 pass break ups. "He's just so unique,” Swinney said. “Everybody's looking for that." - AP College Football

Speed continues to be all the rage at the NFL scouting combine. And on Saturday, it was the defensive players putting on a track meet. Linebacker Isaiah Simmons completed the 40-yard dash in 4.39 seconds - matching the time put up the fastest running back in Indianapolis, Jonathan Taylor, and faster than all but six receivers. The 238-pound Simmons, who played at Clemson, likely cemented himself as a top 10 pick in the April draft. How fast was he? Simmons opted against taking a second attempt. Only two other linebackers were ran sub-4.5s. Willie Gay Jr., of Mississippi State, posted a 4.46 and Davion Taylor, of Colorado, had a 4.49. - AP College Football

2019 BUTKUS AWARD WINNER: The Butkus Foundation announced today that Clemson linebacker Isaiah Simmons has won the 2019 Butkus Award, presented annually to the nation's top linebacker. Matt Butkus, son of Pro Football and College Football Hall of Famer and award namesake Dick Butkus, surprised Simmons with the honor at the Allen N. Reeves Football Complex during the team's College Football Playoff Selection Show watch party. Simmons becomes the first Clemson player to earn the honor in the award's 35-year history. He garnered 29 percent of the weighted vote and 35 percent of first place votes from the selection committee, earning the honor over an esteemed group of finalists that included Wisconsin's Zack Baun, Texas Tech's Jordyn Brooks, Penn State's Micah Parsons, Cal's Evan Weaver and Wyoming's Logan Wilson.

Simmons is the first ACC player to collect the award since Boston College's Luke Kuechly in 2011.
