Oklahoma could sweep the Big 12 Athlete of the Year awards if things fall its way. The Sooners have two strong candidates in former quarterback Jalen Hurts and gymnast Maggie Nichols. The Big 12 presents a male and female award to be announced May 28. Hurts, a Heisman Trophy runner-up who was drafted No. 53 overall by the Philadelphia Eagles last month, led the nation in yards per pass attempt last season (11.3) and was an Associated Press third-team All-America selection. He spent one year at OU after transferring from Alabama. - Norman Transcript

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts will wear the number he wore at Alabama and not the number he wore at Oklahoma on his NFL jersey. The second-round draft choice announced on Wednesday night that he would wear No. 2 for the Eagles. Hurts wore No. 2 during his three seasons at Alabama. He completed his college career at Oklahoma at 2019, when he finished No. 2 in the Heisman Trophy voting while wearing No. 1 on his Sooners jersey. Hurts also wore No. 2 while playing for Channelview High School in Channelview, Texas. The Eagles selected Hurts with the 53rd choice in the NFL Draft on April 24. Philadelphia has a player who wears No. 1 already on its roster - punter Cameron Johnston - but did not have a No. 2 until it was claimed by Hurts. - Birmingham News

Before he was one of the more talked-about draft picks, Jalen Hurts had a fascinating grad-transfer recruitment. More than a year later, Nick Saban leant some insight into the process that landed Hurts in Oklahoma for a crucial senior season. Doing an interview with the website of the Philadelphia Eagles -- who drafted Hurts in the second round of the 2020 NFL draft -- Saban spoke about the three-team pursuit of the Alabama quarterback Saban said the plan was always to pursue a transfer after Hurts' third Alabama season if he was not the starter. Tua Tagovailoa, of course, had secured that job over the previous summer so Hurts was officially on the market after the 2018 season.

"And I remember him coming into me and saying (he) could go to Miami because the quarterback coach had gone to Miami as the offensive coordinator -- the quarterback coach here, Dan Enos," Saban said in the interview posted Sunday morning. "Mike Locksley got the head coaching job at Maryland. 'I could go to Maryland or I could go to Oklahoma.'" Locksley was the former Alabama offensive coordinator who had been on staff for Hurts' three Alabama seasons. Enos was the quarterbacks coach in Hurts' third season before leaving for Miami just days after Alabama's season ended with a national-championship game loss to Clemson. "I said 'Jalen, where do they have the best players?' because he felt more comfortable going where he knew these guys," Saban said. "And he said 'Well, I think they have the best players at Oklahoma.' I said we just played them, and they have some pretty good players on offense too." - Birmingham News

Philadelphia Eagles fans seemed upset with team general manger Howie Roseman after he selected Oklahoma quarterback Jalen Hurts in the second round of the NFL Draft on April 24. But when Roseman chose Southern Miss wide receiver Quez Watkins 147 picks later, the former Athens High School standout was happy to join Hurts in the Eagles' 2020 draft class. Watkins and Hurts had worked out together to prepare for the NFL Scouting Combine. "After I got drafted, he texted me," Watkins said. "It was like: 'Let's get to work.' That's really what we've been about before the Combine and stuff like that. Really been just trying to get to work. "It's really good that I'm with him. We started bonding a lot, started getting closer as the Combine and stuff came and then really we just got a connection, so we'll already have that connection and timing down."

Eagles fans objected to Hurts' selection in the second round because Philadelphia has an established quarterback in Carson Wentz. They would have preferred a rookie with an opportunity to start as the 53rd pick. Watkins said Hurts, who spent three seasons at Alabama before playing at Oklahoma in 2019, had qualities that Philadelphia fans would like. "He's a worker," Watkins said. "He's a competitor. He's not going to stop until he proves to everybody that he's the best. He's always determined. I've never seen a guy that put up 3, 400 yards a game and then come back and work out after the game, after putting up 66 points. Honestly, he's just really different. He's somebody that's going to work to get to that starting spot, work to get better." - Birmingham News

When Philadelphia Eagles general manager Howie Roseman selected Oklahoma quarterback Jalen Hurts in the second round of the NFL Draft on Friday night, he suspected the team's fans might not approve of his choice. "I said, 'Hey guys, we did what we think is the right thing, but hold on. Hold on. The water's going to get a little rough here,'" Roseman said during an appearance on "Angelo Cataldi and the Morning Team" on WIP-FM in Philadelphia. "But what I thought was people would see this kid in particular and what an asset he's been to football teams and the skill set he has and get excited about him because he's exciting. He's an exciting person. He's an exciting player. And he's someone that adds to the culture of your football team. He's an intense competitor. He's an intense worker.

"And so I did think there would be some discussion about what we could do instead at that pick, but I thought just based on all our experiences together and this player in particular that it wouldn't be like this. And I also thought just based on what we've done this offseason that we'd all talk about how much better the team is because I think the team is much better." At Alabama, Hurts played on teams that won two SEC championships and one CFP national championship and reached three straight national title games. The SEC Offensive Player of the Year as a freshman for the Crimson Tide, Hurts was the Heisman Trophy runner-up last season at Oklahoma as he led the Sooners to the Big 12 crown and a spot in the CFP as a transfer. The argument in Philadelphia, though, isn't about Hurts' qualifications. It's about his position on the field and in the draft. - Birmingham News

People were curious how Jalen Hurts would adjust at Oklahoma following an unconventional career at Alabama. Now those curiosities will follow him to Philadelphia. The Eagles selected Hurts in the NFL Draft's second round at No. 53 overall Friday, making him the third former Oklahoma player taken this week. He'll go up against his former receiver, CeeDee Lamb, in the NFC East. Lamb was drafted by the Cowboys on Thursday. The Eagles are committed to quarterback Carson Wentz, but Hurts' versatility has opened interesting possibilities about how teams could use him. He's considered one of the best athletes at his position in the draft and has a strong leadership reputation dating back to his time at Alabama.

Hurts ranked first in the nation in yards per pass attempt at 11.3, just a hair behind the FBS record. But pinpoint passing remains one of his question marks. Staying in the pocket and making better decisions must be points of emphasis in the NFL, scouts say. Otherwise, he's a durable runner whose success rate is unquestioned. Hurts was part of 52 collegiate victories and went 38-4 as a starter. "I think he's just become way more of a factor in the throwing game," OU coach Lincoln Riley said. "I think people see that he improved a lot his junior year at Alabama when he wasn't the starter, and then I think this year was head and shoulders above that. I think he's come a long way in that regard, been able to do it and have success at different schools with different systems, which I think always bodes well." - Norman Transcript

The comparisons to Lamar Jackson were inevitable. Once Jalen Hurts arrived at Oklahoma last year and started putting up video game numbers in head coach Lincoln Riley's offense, the race to put it all into context was on. Sooners predecessors Baker Mayfield and Kyler Murray were obvious comps. Both won the Heisman Trophy and were selected with the No. 1 overall pick. LSU's Joe Burrow took the Heisman out of the picture with one of the most impressive college seasons of all time. He'll also almost certainly be the No. 1 pick when the Cincinnati Bengals go on the clock next month. And that's where Jackson creeps into the picture.

His career was longer and more consistent at Louisville, but there were many of the same doubts about him coming out of college. The athleticism was readily apparent - and nearly impossible to stop - but did he have the arm to stress NFL defenses? Could he make enough plays from the pocket to allow him to take full advantage of his speed, strength and vision in the running game? General managers and head coaches looking to replicate even a fraction of that success could well turn to Hurts as a developmental talent with a pedigree of great success. "I don't put a ceiling on my ability in terms of how great I can be," Hurts said last month at the NFL Scouting Combine. "I'm definitely a student of the game and been able to adjust to all the different coaches I've been a part of. For me, it's about steps every day and being the best I can be." - Herald Bulletin

A few passes sailed out of reach, but they didn't concern Nick Basquine much. Out of more than 70 throws, former Oklahoma quarterback Jalen Hurts was mostly on the mark. He and Basquine had rehearsed the workout for Oklahoma's Pro Day, but only briefly days earlier. What Basquine saw Wednesday was a much improved thrower, even since the end of last season. "Our first session throwing [was Sunday]. You could just see a lot of improvement," he said. "From his training and just the confidence he has in himself and his throwing mechanics, everything like that, you can see an improved player. Just how he's spinning the ball, the conviction how he's throwing the ball. "He was sure of himself, I think that was the big thing."

Hurts completed 70 percent of his passes last season at OU, his one and only campaign with the program after transferring from Alabama. He ranked ninth nationally in passing yards and second in passing efficiency. Questions about Hurts' accuracy, however, have followed him at both stops. He wanted this appearance - his first in Norman since the 2019-20 season ended - to help provide some answers. "I think it went well. Could've done some things better … You get nitpicky, you talk about certain ball placements, right? I want to hit the guy in the nose every time," Hurts said. "I want to allow him to put the biscuit in the basket, as the guy says on TV." - Norman Transcript

Jalen Hurts' Senior Bowl helmet gives a snapshot of his college career, an OU on the right side and his old Alabama No. 2 on the left. Now, the quarterback who led two elite programs to the College Football Playoffs is trying to prove himself again, as an NFL prospect, back in the state where he began his college career. Hurts officially began his audition for NFL teams this week with practices and meetings ahead of Saturday's Senior Bowl. His biggest selling point: "I win." Indeed last season's Heisman Trophy runner-up did a lot of winning for both Oklahoma and the Crimson Tide, putting up big numbers both passing and rushing. But questions remain about his passing accuracy and consistency, leading to an uncertain draft status.

LSU Heisman winner Joe Burrow is the likely No. 1 overall pick by the Cincinnati Bengals, whose staff is coaching Hurts and the South team. Tua Tagovailoa, who replaced Hurts as the starter, is also regarded as a likely first-round draft pick despite recovering from hip surgery. Hurts' Senior Bowl teammate Justin Herbert of Oregon is projected as a high first-rounder. Then there's the 6-foot-1, 218-pound Hurts, who has a stellar resume but still some questions. "I don't want to get into comparisons," he said Tuesday before the teams' first practices. "That's kind of like the kiss of death. I try to be the best version of myself. Go out there and try to win, try to lead my guys, build relationships with my guys. Win ball games." - AP College Football

2019 HEISMAN TROPHY FINALIST: Hurts, a fifth-year senior, marks the fourth straight year Oklahoma has featured a Heisman Trophy finalist, including 2017 winner Baker Mayfield and 2018 winner Kyler Murray. He is the Sooners' ninth different finalist and their 11th finalist overall while he tries to become Okahoma's eighth winner of the award. Hurts, who transferred to Oklahoma in 2019 from Alabama, led the Sooners to a 12-1 record, a Big 12 title, and a spot in the College Football Playoff. He has thrown for 3,634 yards on 222-of-309 passing with 32 TDs to go with 1,255 yards rushing on 219 carries (5.7 yards per carry) with 18 TDs. Hurts also has one receiving TD. He averaged 279.5 passing yards and 96.5 rushing yards and accounted for 51 touchdowns, tied for the national lead.

His 71.8% completion percentage is on pace to break Mayfield's 2016 school record (70.9) and his 200.3 passing efficiency is behind only Burrow of quarterbacks who have played in at least 10 games. He has helped Oklahoma's offense lead the country in yards per play (8.2) while the Sooners are second nationally in yards per game (554.2). Hurts is also first in the country in yards per pass attempt (11.8) and yards per completion (16.4). His total offense of 376.1 yards per game is third in the country. - Heisman Memorial Trophy

It wasn't pretty, but Jalen Hurts did what he usually does late in the season - win. The senior passed for two touchdowns and ran for two more, and No. 8 Oklahoma held off TCU 28-24 on Saturday night to clinch a spot in the Big 12 championship game. It was a rough game by Hurts' standards. He connected on just 11 of 21 passes, threw an interception that was returned for a touchdown and lost a fumble in the red zone. But Hurts, who now has a combined 36-3 record as a starter at Alabama and Oklahoma, was fine after the game. "Regardless of the fumble or the pick six or whatever mess-up I may have had today, we found a way," he said. Hurts ran for 173 yards on 28 carries.

He passed for 145 yards - a total that could have been much higher. "One of the first games where he just missed a few throws down the field that could have really busted the thing open," Oklahoma coach Lincoln Riley said. "And they were all just long by just a tad bit" So he was just a little bit off on some of the deep balls." Kennedy Brooks added 149 yards rushing for the Sooners (10-1, 7-1, No. 9 CFP), who kept their College Football Playoff hopes alive. Oklahoma won its 20th consecutive November game dating to 2014. The Sooners outgained the Horned Frogs 511 yards to 204, but turned the ball over three times. "The one kind of negative point of an otherwise pretty dominant performance," Riley said. - Oklahoma/AP College Football

Gabe Brkic kicked a 31-yard field goal with 1:45 left after Jalen Hurts threw four touchdown passes in a big comeback and No. 10 Oklahoma kept its playoff hopes alive, beating No. 12 Baylor 34-31 on Saturday night while ending the Bears' bid for an undefeated season. While the Sooners (9-1, 6-1 Big 12, No. 10 CFP) were without standout receiver CeeDee Lamb, Hurts was 30-of-42 passing for 297 yards with all of his TDs coming after Baylor took a 25-point lead early in the second quarter. The quarterback, who had three turnovers, also ran for 114 yards.

Baylor (9-1, 6-1, No. 13 CFP), which had its 11-game winning streak snapped, joined No. 7 Minnesota in losing their first games Saturday. The only remaining undefeated FBS teams are No. 1 LSU, No. 2 Ohio State and No. 3 Clemson. Oklahoma erased a three-touchdown halftime deficit and tied the game at 31-all on Hurts' 2-yard TD pass to Brayden Willis with 5:25 left. The Bears had run only seven plays for 35 yards in the second half until that point, and their only first down had been on a play when JaMycal Hasty fumbled, before punting again. The Bears had one more chance after the field goal. They got to the Sooners 40 before linebacker Nik Bonitto's interception with 29 seconds left. - Oklahoma/AP College Football

Jalen Hurts is certainly on pace for the opportunity to become the third transfer quarterback in three seasons to win a Heisman Trophy for Oklahoma. The dual-threat grad transfer from Alabama is averaging 397 total yards a game -- 296.3 yards passing and 100.7 yards rushing per game. He has accounted for 30 touchdowns (20 passing, 10 rushing) with only three interceptions.   The pass-happy Big 12 isn't what it used to be. The dual-threat quarterback is taking over. No longer is 400-plus yards through the air the norm in a league where most of the starting quarterbacks are mobile and adding another element to an offense. "It's always more difficult on defensive coaches if you have a guy who can run with the football," TCU coach Gary Patterson said. Six Big 12 quarterbacks have thrown for more than 200 yards and rushed for at least 50 in a game this season.

Oklahoma's Jalen Hurts leads the nation with six such games. Joining him are Sam Ehlinger of Texas and Oklahoma State's Spencer Sanders with three apiece, Baylor's Charlie Brewer and Iowa State's Brock Purdy with two each and Carter Stanley of Kansas has one. Kansas State's Skylar Thompson ran 61 yards on a fourth-quarter play last Saturday to set up his 3-yard touchdown run that gave the Wildcats a 24-17 win over TCU. "It's tough to play defense right now," West Virginia coach Neal Brown said. "Those are really good quarterbacks that are playing at a high level and they all have the ability to run." Iowa State coach Matt Campbell said mobile quarterbacks are prevalent in high school football, so finding one who can run and throw "is probably is a lot easier today than it's ever been. "Almost everybody in the Big 12 has got a quarterback that's got the ability to do both -- and to do both well," he said. - AP College Football

After No. 5 Oklahoma downed rival Texas last week, coach Lincoln Riley said a true test for the Sooners would be how they bounced back from that emotional game to face West Virginia as the heavy favorite. Riley was pleased with the results. Jalen Hurts passed for 316 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for 75 yards and two more scores and the Sooners cruised to a 52-14 victory over West Virginia on Saturday. Oklahoma (7-0, 4-0) is unbeaten in eight games against West Virginia (3-4, 1-3) since the Mountaineers joined the Big 12 Conference in the 2012 season. The Sooners have won 20 of their last 21 games.

Oklahoma, which rolled up 562 yards of offense, has scored at least 34 points in 17 straight games, the second-longest such streak in the Football Bowl Subdivision since 1980. The Sooners didn't score a touchdown in the fourth quarter, though; they've scored a touchdown in every quarter but two this season. "I think we're serious about being a good football team," Riley said. "We handled this week like a team that has some big goals in mind and understanding that it is a process. It's not about one game here or there. It's a constant climb for us." West Virginia quarterback Austin Kendall, who spent three seasons at Oklahoma as a backup to Baker Mayfield and Kyler Murray before transferring, completed 15 of 31 passes for 182 yards, including touchdowns of 38 and 7 yards to T.J. Simmons. - Oklahoma/AP College Football

Hurts leads all quarterbacks nationally with 99.8 yards rushing per game. Texas defensive back B.J. Foster said keys to stopping Oklahoma include forcing Hurts to throw - and getting a lick on him when he tries to run. "From what I've seen, he doesn't like to slide, so he's going to engage contact with you," Foster said. "He's not dumb. He's going to have to slide, or it's not going to be good for him." Oklahoma averages 288.4 yards rushing per game, while Texas allows just 116.8. "We're sound on the run game. He's going to have to pass the ball," Foster said.   Jalen Hurts threw for 228 yards and two touchdowns, ran for 56 yards and two more TDs and added another line to his Heisman Trophy resume in leading No. 6 Oklahoma to a 45-20 victory over Kansas on Saturday. Rhamondre Stevenson added 109 yards rushing and a score on just five carries for the Sooners (5-0, 2-0 Big 12), who spotted Kansas (2-4, 0-2) a touchdown lead before ripping off seven straight scores. That allowed them to cruise to their 22nd straight true road win, the second-longest streak since at least World War II in major college football. Bud Wilkinson's Sooners won 25 in a row from 1953-58. It also allowed Oklahoma to build momentum for next weekend's Red River Showdown with No. 11 Texas.

Carter Stanley threw for 230 yards and three touchdowns, including two to Stephon Robinson, while Pooka Williams followed a 252-yard rushing performance against the Sooners a year ago with 137 on Saturday. The rout most people anticipated didn't happen right from the start. In fact, the Jayhawks outplayed the Sooners throughout most of the first quarter. They had forced a punt and were pinned at their own goal line midway through the quarter when Stanley marched them 98 yards in just over 5 minutes. And when the senior quarterback lofted a pass to Daylon Charlot for a 22-yard touchdown, the home fans who braved a 30-minute lightning delay cheered the 7-0 lead. Hurts and the Sooners eventually got on track. - Oklahoma/AP College Football

Oklahoma receivers CeeDee Lamb and Charleston Rambo had envisioned how Saturday's game against Texas Tech would go for them. With help from Jalen Hurts, those thoughts became reality. Hurts passed for 415 yards and three touchdowns, Lamb had career highs of 185 yards receiving and three touchdowns, and No. 6 Oklahoma rolled past the Red Raiders 55-16. Rambo entered the day with the team lead in receptions, yards and touchdowns, but Lamb got the best of their friendly competition on Saturday. "That's my roommate, so Thursday we were talking about stuff we were going to do on Saturday and he did it," Rambo said. "That's my dog, so I'm happy for him."

Rambo had 122 yards receiving on just two catches in the first quarter, and Lamb took it from there. "It's exciting when you see one of your closest friends doing the things that he wanted to do and it was all planned," Lamb said. "He's doing a good job, and I just hope he keeps getting better." Hurts also ran for 70 yards and another score for the Sooners (4-0, 1-0 Big 12). His 485 yards of total offense ranks eighth in Oklahoma history. It was the first 400-yard passing game for the senior transfer from Alabama. "He's seeing the field really well," Oklahoma coach Lincoln Riley said. "He's understanding how we want to attack people. He was a little more confident today, a little bit more steady." - Oklahoma/AP College Football

Lincoln Riley and Jalen Hurts sent the Big 12 a message in fifth-ranked Oklahoma's 48-14 victory over UCLA on Saturday night at the Rose Bowl. Despite 611 yards of offense - including 439 coming courtesy of Hurts - the Oklahoma coach and quarterback are far from satisfied going into an off week before opening conference play. "I think we're headed in the right direction," said Hurts, who became the first Oklahoma quarterback to pass for 200 yards and rush for 100 in the first half. "The intent for us is coming out and playing a complete game. I don't think we did it tonight. We can improve."

The graduate transfer from Alabama led the Sooners to six touchdowns and a pair of field goals in 10 drives. He completed 15 of 20 passes for 289 yards and three touchdowns and ran 14 times for 150 yards and a score. "He played pretty good. He made the majority of plays that he was supposed to make and then a few where he made a couple off script that were important plays," Riley said of Hurts. "He took some steps from the last couple of weeks. It's a laundry list of things to get better at, and that is how I will approach it with him." CeeDee Lamb and Charleston Rambo each had two touchdowns to help the Sooners (3-0) win their 21st straight true road game. That is tied with Alabama (1970-75) the second-longest away streak after World War II. UCLA drops to 0-3 for the second straight year.   Jalen Hurts passed for 259 yards and three touchdowns in just over two quarters and No. 4 Oklahoma rolled past South Dakota 70-14 on Saturday night. It was Oklahoma's highest points total since scoring 79 in a victory over North Texas in 2007. CeeDee Lamb had six catches for 144 yards and a touchdown, and Rhamondre Stevenson ran for 104 yards and a score for the Sooners (2-0), who gained 733 yards against the FCS Coyotes (0-2). "They're just so multiple," South Dakota coach Bob Nielson said. "You've got a tremendously deep group of really good wide receivers, you've got a couple of NFL-caliber running backs and a really talented quarterback who can make big plays with his feet and throw it. Put that together with a good offensive line, and I'm not sure there's going to be a lot of teams that do a good job defending them throughout the course of the year."

Austin Simmons passed for 244 yards and two touchdowns for South Dakota, but he threw two interceptions. Kody Case had six catches for 68 yards and a touchdown. The Sooners led 28-0 at halftime. Oklahoma's defense got into the act early in the third quarter when Brendan Radley-Hiles scored on a 30-yard interception return. Radley-Hiles also had a fumble recovery. Oklahoma forced three turnovers after failing to force any in its season-opening victory over Houston. The Sooners held the Coyotes to 348 yards.   Even one of the best nights ever for an Oklahoma player wasn't good enough for Jalen Hurts. The new Sooners quarterback passed for three touchdowns and ran for three more, and No. 4 Oklahoma rolled past Houston 49-31 on Sunday night. It was Hurts' first game for the Sooners since he transferred from Alabama. He put on a show as his predecessor, 2018 Heisman Trophy winner Kyler Murray, watched. He posted 508 total yards, the fifth-most in school history. Hurts was not impressed. And at a school that has produced back-to-back Heisman-winning quarterbacks in Baker Mayfield and Murray, nitpicking has become the norm at that position. "We did some really good things out there tonight, but there are a lot of things we can improve on," he said. "We've got to take that next step."

Hurts started at Alabama for two years before losing the job to Tua Tagovailoa. He stayed as a backup at Alabama last season, then transferred to Oklahoma and won the starting job in preseason camp. He looked at home in the opener - he completed 20 of 23 passes for 332, ran for 176 yards on 16 carries and helped the Sooners gain 686 total yards. Oklahoma coach Lincoln Riley liked how Hurts handled the situation. "He played good," Riley said. "There were things he could do better, but I thought he handled the moment good. You could tell out there that he'd been in it, certainly. I'm sure he had some nerves, but he did a good job managing them." - AP College Football

Jalen Hurts' rise to the starting quarterback position at Oklahoma wasn't a foregone conclusion, despite his wealth of championship experience at Alabama. Oklahoma coach Lincoln Riley took his time before naming Hurts the starter for the fourth-ranked Sooners' Sept. 1 season opener against Houston. Though Hurts played in three national championship games for Alabama and helped the Crimson Tide win the 2017 national title, Riley said he wanted to see how Hurts would adjust to a new system after he transferred to Oklahoma in January .

Hurts barely won the job over redshirt freshman Tanner Mordecai and true freshman Spencer Rattler. Hurts didn't clinch the job until Riley reviewed a recent scrimmage. Riley spent two years as Oklahoma's offensive coordinator and is entering his third as the Sooners' head coach, yet this might have been his toughest call. "I just thought he was just slightly better here as it went on, and it was slightly," Riley said. "Probably the closest one (quarterback race) that we've had since I've been at Oklahoma." - AP College Football

No. 4 Oklahoma has named Jalen Hurts its starting quarterback for the Sept. 1 season opener against Houston. Hurts played in three national championship games for Alabama and helped the Crimson Tide win the 2017 national title. He transferred to Oklahoma in January and has won the job over redshirt freshman Tanner Mordecai and true freshman Spencer Rattler. Hurts started the 2016 and 2017 seasons and led Alabama to a 26-2 record. He lost the starting job to Tua Tagovailoa in 2018 but still played in 13 games. He replaced the injured Tagovailoa in the fourth quarter of the 2018 SEC championship game and rallied the Crimson Tide to a 35-28 win over Georgia.   Hurts is 21 and has already graduated from Alabama with a degree in communications. Running back Trey Sermon said Hurts' maturity stands out. "He's an old head to me," Sermon said. "He listens to a lot of old-school music. He makes a lot of jokes that you hear that my uncle would say." Mayfield was a fiery, vocal leader who would yell and jump around. Murray was more subdued, but had a swagger that his teammates latched onto. Hurts? He says: "I chill." "He's kept to himself, but he's still always working," Lamb said. "He's always either with film or he's trying to go get some routes in. He's definitely the most laid back guy on the team, if not top five."

Hurts feels his personality meshes well with Riley's, and he likes being paired with an aggressive, offensive-minded coach. "I think coach Riley has really good intentions," he said. "Really good intentions with really bad intentions." Hurts sees Riley as a players' coach and said Riley has made a special effort to build a connection with him. "Our relationship has really grown," Hurts said. "You kind of have to force it because of the short time I'm here and how much I really need to take in before we actually get into gameplay. It's a relationship I definitely appreciate. Definitely a different relationship from coaches I've had in the past. I think the relationship can take us a long way. I think it can take this team a long way." - AP College Football

Opendorse, which was founded by former Nebraska football players Blake Lawrence and Adi Kunalic, helps over 7,500 athletes share content from partners on social media. The company works with brands like Tide, FedEx and Wendys. Hurts ranks first in average engagements on Twitter in all of college football but is not in the top-25 on Instagram. Hurts, who has nearly 200,000 Twitter followers, played three seasons at Alabama before transferring to OU in January.   Lincoln Riley still isn't ready to call Jalen Hurts the next Oklahoma starting quarterback. But the head coach is still buried in questions about the Alabama transfer quarterback at Big 12 media days in Arlington, Texas. Hurts hasn't been in the system very long, something that benefited back-to-back Heisman Trophy winners Kyler Murray and Baker Mayfield. Hurts may not have immediate experience with the Sooners, but has something else.

"He certainly brings a lot of great game experience that Kyler and Baker did not have when they got here," Riley said. "But also doesn't have as much experience in the system. But it's been fun. He's been eager. There've been things we do that he's been able to trace back to the roots of what he's done at Alabama, or even high school. "It's not like you're starting from scratch. He's a smart kid, he's been eager, he's worked hard at it and we've meshed together well." - Norman Transcript
