Quentin Harris, Duke, Player News

As the world shut down around him last month due to the coronavirus pandemic, David Cutcliffe thought about the unique adverse impact seven of his former players would be facing. Duke football had a pro day scheduled for March 23, a time for those senior prospects to work out for scouts in preparation for the NFL Draft. But the university suspended its athletics programs on March 12, the same day the ACC and NCAA basketball tournaments were canceled due to the public health emergency. NFL teams halted i n-person scouting even with the draft five weeks away. With no pro day, Cutcliffe prepared a digital approach to put Duke's seven top departing senior players in the best position possible to become professional players. "We built a really attracti ve manuscript electronically," Cutcliffe said Friday. After Duke saw quarterback Daniel Jones go No. 6 overall in the first round to the New York Giants last year, none of Duke's players are projected to be selected in the draft's seven rounds. But the f ree agent route has been a popular path to the NFL for Duke's players lately. - Herald Sun

Deon Jackson ran 2 yards for the go-ahead TD one possession before Harris threw a 49-yard scoring pass to Jalon Calhoun, helping the Blue Devils (5-7, 3-5 Atlantic Coast Conference) win a game played in a persistent downpour that made things tough on the offenses. His 18-yard pass to Calhoun to the Miami 5 set up Jackson's score that made it 20-17 with 9:37 to play.Miami replaced starting QB Jarren Williams with N'Kosi Perry for the next drive - a three-and-out that netted 1 yard - and the Blue Devils needed only four plays to take a two-score lead, with Harris hitting Calhoun down the left sideline. They stopped Miami on a fourth down at the Duke 43 with 4:32 to play, then sealed it whe n Trevon McSwain sacked Perry and knocked the ball loose for Koby Quansah to recover at the Miami 26 with 2:17 to play. Williams was 11 of 26 for 142 yards with a 15-yard touchdown pass to Robert Burns and Cam'Ron Harris ran 8 yards for an early touchdow n for the Hurricanes (6-6, 4-4), who closed the regular season with consecutive losses. - Duke/AP College Football

Quentin Harris waited four years for his chance to be Duke's leader. He's taking advantage of it with the help of some rookies. Harris passed for a career-high 345 yards and four touchdowns, three to freshmen, to lead Duke past North Carolina A&T 45-13 o n Saturday night. Harris also rushed for 83 yards and a score as the Blue Devils (1-1) overcame a sluggish start to win their home opener for the eighth consecutive season. "Whenever you get a chance to play well in a game setting, it's a good confidence boost," Harris said. "I think it shows you what our offense is capable of when we're playing to the best of our abilities."Duke scored three touchdowns in the final 3:10 of the first half, turning a 10-7 deficit into a 28-10 lead. Harris had scor ing strikes of 22 yards and 39 yards to Mateo Durant and Eli Pancol, respectively, and capped the spurt with a 6-yard touchdown run on a quarterback draw. Jalon Calhoun had eight catches for 105 yards and two touchdowns for the Blue Devils. Calhoun and P ancol are freshmen who have quickly established a rapport with Harris, a fifth-year senior who was a backup behind NFL first-round draft pick Daniel Jones until this season. "It's becoming more and more his team," Duke coach David Cutcliffe said. "They t rust him, and he trusts them." Jeremiah Martin rushed for 82 yards, including a 66-yard touchdown, for N.C. A&T (1-1). Noel Ruiz made field goals of 40 and 36 yards for the Aggies. - AP College Football

Duke coach David Cutcliffe isn't losing any sleep over the challenge of replacing Daniel Jones, the first quarterback selected in April's NFL draft. That's because he has fifth-year senior Quentin Harris ready to take reigns. Cutcliffe said Wednesday dur ing ACC media days that he has "great confidence" in Harris, calling him a "brilliant" player who is well prepared to position the Blue Devils to compete for the Coastal Division title this season.Cutcliffe says Harris has a great grasp of the tea m's pass play concepts and now it's only a matter of zeroing in on the plays he's most comfortable with. Harris should also get plenty of help offensively from running backs Brittain Brown and Deon Jackson, who ran for 847 yards last season - the most by a running back in the Cutcliffe era. - AP College Football
