2019 ALL-BIG SKY CONFERENCE SECOND TEAM (COACHES): Quarterback Case Cookus, Senior, Northern Arizona,...Cookus was named second team all-conference following the most prolific passing season in NAU history. The senior signal caller broke the Lumberjacks' single-season mark for passing yards with 4,114 and tossed 31 touchdowns. He was just the 10th player in league history to reach 4,000 passing yards in a season. In addition, Cookus became NAU's all-time leader and just the fourth player in Big Sky Conf erence history to post over 12,000 career aerial yards - with his total of 12,082.His 105 career touchdown passes rank as the most on NAU annals and he is only the second player in Big Sky history to record 100 or more TD tosses. In 2019, Cookus t hrew for over 300 yards in nine times and threw at least two touchdown passes in nine games. He was among the national and Big Sky leaders in nearly every passing category including topping the FCS in passing yards (4,114) and passing yards per game (342 .8). Luis Aguilar kicked a 38-yard field goal with 4 seconds left in the game and Northern Arizona rallied past Portland State 31-29 on Saturday night. Portland State had taken a 29-28 lead on Cody Williams' 21-yard field goal with 1:26 left to play. Williams missed a go-ahead 44-yard try, but the Lumberjacks (4-4, 2-2 Big Sky Conference) were flagged for roughing the kicker, giving the Vikings (5-4, 3-2) a first down at the NAU 13-yard line. But NAU quarterback Case Cookus had plenty of time to lead his tea m to victory, moving into second place on the Lumberjacks' all-time passing list while completing 4 of 5 passes for 47 yards on the drive.Cookus entered the game needing 325 yards to pass Jason Murrietta (10,717). He finished with 363 yards on 26- of-41 passing with two touchdowns and an interception. Next up for Cookus is all-time NAU leader Travis Brown (11,400). The Lumberjacks cruised to a 21-9 halftime lead and stretched their advantage to 28-9 on their first possession of the second half whe n Cookus hit Gino Campiotti for a 27-yard TD. But Portland State used 1-yard TD runs by Sirgeo Hoffman and Malik Walker and two Williams field goals to score 20 straight points and grab a lead that lasted just over 1 minute. Joe Logan ran for 64 yards an d two scores for NAU. Hoffman finished with 140 yards on 23 carries for PSU. Davis Alexander completed 22 of 39 passes for 307 yards with one interception. Chase Cookus threw for 406 yards with five touchdown passes, three of them in the third quarter, and Northern Arizona defeated Northern Colorado 41-23 on Saturday. After trailing 13-10 at halftime, the Lumberjacks (3-3, 1-1 Big Sky) scored 24 points in t he third quarter and led 34-20 heading into the fourth. Cookus threw TD passes of 61 and 16 yards to Brandon Porter and 51 yards to Stacy Chukwumezie in the explosive period.Cookus added a 14-yard scoring pass to Ceejhay French-Love for NAU's fina l score. In three home games against Northern Colorado, Cookus - a fifth-year senior - passed for 1,040 yards and 15 touchdowns. Jacob Knipp was 31-of-49 passing for 411 yards with two touchdowns and an interception for the Bears (1-5, 1-1). Case Cookus found Brandon Porter for a touchdown pass to end the first half and another to start the second as Northern Arizona broke away from a field goal battle, defeating Missouri State 37-23 in Thursday night's season opener. New coach Chris Ball be gan his tenure with the win. Cookus and Porter teamed on an 8-yard pass with 18 seconds left before halftime and on a 62-yarder early in the third quarter, the 14-0 burst pushing the lead to 27-6. Cookus finished with 290 yards, completing 18 of 29, and is the fifth Lumberjack to pass for more than 8,000 yards. Porter led all receivers with 140 yards on six catches.Missouri State managed three Parker Lacina field goals until Peyton Huslig hooked up with Tyler Currie on a 30-yard pass play - the B ears' first touchdown of the season coming with five seconds left in the third quarter.
