Northern Colorado coach Earnest Collins Jr. has been fired after nine seasons. Athletic director Darren Dunn announced Sunday that Collins would not return as the head coach. His teams posted a 28-72 record, including a 2-10 mark this season. Collins had been given a five-year contract extension in 2016 and led the team to its first two winning seasons as an FCS program in 2015 and 2016. During Collins' time as coach, the team's academic progress rate improved and the team graduation rate increased from 66% to 82%, the best in the Big Sky Conference during his tenure. Dunn said it was not an easy decision to make and thanked Collins for his dedication to the players. The school has retained a consulting firm to assist with the national search for a new coach. - AP College Football

Jacob Knipp threw three touchdown passes, Braxton George had an interception with 47 seconds left and Northern Colorado beat Idaho State 26-20 on Saturday night. Knipp was 19 of 25 for 237 yards passing, threw a pair of touchdown passes to Willie Fairman and another to Noah Sol. Milo Hall ran for 118 yards on 30 carries for the Bears (2-7, 2/3 Big Sky Conference). Idaho State (3-6, 2-4) led once in the game, 20-18 early in the fourth quarter on David Allish's 20-yard field goal. The Bears capped the sco ring when Knipp threw a 14-yard touchdown pass to Fairman with 9:19 remaining.Idaho State drove to the Bears 36 on the next series but stalled when Sagan Gronauer threw an interception to Michael Walker. With about four minutes left, Gronauer led the Bengals to the Northern Colorado 18 before being picked off by George on third-and-9. Idaho State starting quarterback Matt Struck threw a 40-yard touchdown pass to Michael Dean in the first half. Ty Flanagan finished with 124 yards rushing on 28 car ries.
