Josh Jones, Houston, Player News
|
A year ago, Josh Jones briefly contemplated a transfer to another school or declaring early for the NFL draft. The University of Houston had changed coaching staffs, which meant a fourth offensive line coach in five years. "I did for a second with the un certainty … just looking at my future," Jones said at the time. "(To come back for my senior year) was the best decision for me." Projected as a late first round pick, Jones, the 6-5, 319-pound linchpin of the Cougars' offensive line, had to wait longe r than expected before finally being taken by the Arizona Cardinals in the third round of the NFL draft. The selection of Jones, a local product who played at Bush High School before a four-year career at UH, marks the fifth straight year the Couga rs have had at least one player selected in the draft, the longest stretch since 1989-94. A three-year starter at left tackle for the Cougars, Jones' draft stock appeared to rise after the NFL scouting combine and Senior Bowl. NFL personnel raved about h is athleticism and toughness. But after not being among the seven offensive linemen taken in the first round, Jones was finally selected with the 72nd overall pick. - Houston Chronicle
