He is the second-leading passer in program history (6,487) and ranks third all-time in total offense (7,531). He conducted the Valley's top passing attack and number two offense. Simmons led the Valley in several categories including passing yards (2,953), pass touchdowns (27), points responsible for (200) and total offense (295.1). His 252 yards are the second-most posted against the Jacks' eight-ranked defense all season.   Austin Simmons passed for two touchdowns, ran for another and South Dakota upset rival South Dakota State 24-21 on Saturday. It is the seventh straight season the Coyotes knocked off a ranked team, having entered the game 0-3 against Top 25 FCS teams this season. Simmons was 20 for 32 for 252 yards, moving him past Wesley Beschorner for second on the all-time South Dakota list. Adding in 47 yards rushing on the game, he surpassed 1,000 for his career. Jack Cochrane led the defense with 11 tackles, giving him 105 for the season.

The fifth-ranked Jackrabbits led 7-0 in the first quarter and 14-10 early in the third but couldn't hold on. Simmons' 2-yard run put South Dakota (5-7, 4-4 Missouri Valley Conference) up 17-14 and followed that up with a 21-yard touchdown pass for a 24-14 lead entering the fourth quarter. Keaton Heide's second touchdown pass pulled the Jackrabbits within a field goal early in the fourth quarter but their last three drives ended with a fumble, a fourth-down failure and a fumble on a trick play in the final minute. South Dakota State (8-4, 5-3) entered the game in a four-way tie for second place behind North Dakota State but only Northern Iowa won its finale. He led the Coyotes on four consecutive touchdown drives of 75 yards or more to start the game, and passed for four touchdowns for the fourth time in his career.   Austin Simmons threw four touchdown passes and ran for a fifth score, South Dakota had two 100-yard rushers, and the Coyotes defeated Youngstown State 56-21 on Saturday. Kai Henry ran for 130 yards and two touchdowns and Canaan Brooks had 113 yards and a TD for the Coyotes (4-6, 3-3 Missouri Valley), who rushed for 327 yards. Simmons added 180 passing yards for a total offense of 507.

South Dakota led 35-14 at halftime on three touchdown passes by Simmons, a rushing touchdown by Simmons and a short TD run by Henry. The Coyotes scored the first three touchdowns of the second half and led 56-14 until late in the fourth quarter. Joe Craycraft completed 18 of 30 passes for 246 yards and three touchdowns under heavy pressure for the Penguins (5-5, 1-5). He was sacked six times. Simmons played just three quarters and became the fifth Coyote to pass for 5,000 career yards during the game.   Austin Simmons threw four touchdown passes, two of them to Caleb Vander Esch, and South Dakota breezed to a 45-10 victory over Missouri State on Saturday. Missouri State took a 7-0 lead when Tyler Lovelace recovered a Kai Henry fumble at the South Dakota 32-yard line. The Bears found the end zone in seven plays from there, scoring on Peyton Huslig's 4-yard TD toss to Jordan Murray. But South Dakota (3-3, 2-0 Missouri Valley Football Conference) pulled even 88 seconds later on a Simmons-to-Vander Esch 56-yard TD strike.

Mason Lorber's 38-yard field goal 10 seconds into the second quarter gave the Coyotes the lead for good and ignited a 38-0 scoring run. Simmons had TD tosses of 8 yards to Drew Greenhaw, 29 yards to Vander Esch and a 14-yarder to Ben Klett. Kai Henry and Canaan Brooks each ran for a score in the second half. Simmons finished 15-of-21 passing for 228 yards and he added 34 yards on seven carries. Vander Esch hauled in four passes for 96 yards. Ben Klett had 69 of South Dakota's 220 yards on the ground. Huslig connected on 21 of 40 passes for 184 yards with two interceptions. The Bears (1-4, 1-1) managed just 64 yards on the ground on 30 carries. - AP College Football

Simmons scored on runs of 4, 37 and 44 yards and tossed a 29-yard touchdown pass to Drew Greenhaw. The Coyotes racked up 522 yards against the nation's 15th-ranked defense (304 ypg).   Austin Simmons ran for three touchdowns and threw for a fourth as South Dakota shutout Indiana State, 38-0 in the Missouri Valley Conference opener for both schools Saturday. The shutout was the first in a Dakota Days homecoming game since 2004, when the Coyotes blanked Augustana, 23-0. Simmons capped a 10-play, 75-yard opening drive with a 4-yard run for his first touchdown. Kai Henry broke free for a 42-yard scoring run in the first quarter and Simmons raced 37 yards for a score to open the second as the Coyotes (2-3, 1-0) built a 24-0 advantage at intermission.

Simmons finished 15 of 25 for 210 yards with an interception and a 29-yard touchdown pass. He carried nine times for 138 yards. Gunnar See was 23 of 38 for 239 yards and an interception for Indiana State (2-3, 0-1). South Dakota forced eight Indiana State punts and the Sycamores turned the ball over on downs twice in the second half. The previous two meetings between the programs went to overtime. The Coyotes survived a 33-30 double overtime battle in Vermillion two years ago. Last year Indiana State won, 51-48 in triple OT. - AP College Football

  2019 PRESEASON ALL-MISSOURI VALLEY FOOTBALL (HONORABLE MENTION): QB Austin Simmons, South Dakota,...In his first year as the starting signal caller, Simmons led the Valley and ranked fourth nationally with 3,124 yards passing during the regular season. That total is second-highest in program history to Chris Streveler's high in 2017. Simmons started all 11 games and completed 287-of-469 passes with 18 touchdowns against eight interceptions.

He completed more passes than six other quarterbacks in the league attempted. Simmons earned honorable mention honors from the conference last year after leading the Valley and ranking sixth nationally for total offense at 314 yards per game. Not accounting for sacks, he was the team's leading rusher with 459 yards and a 6.5-yard per carry average. He passed for a season-high 462 yards with four touchdowns in last season's home opener against Northern Colorado, and threw for at least 325 yards in four of eight MVFC games. - South Dakota Football
