 Joe Burrow, LSU, Player News

After turning in arguably the best season for a collegiate quarterback, former LSU star Joe Burrow was selected unanimously as the Allstate Sugar Bowl's James J. Corbett Award winner on Friday morning. The honor is presented to the top amateur athlete in the state of Louisiana. Burrow, a native of Athens, Ohio, set an FBS record of 60 touchdown passes while leading the nation with 5,671 yards passing (an LSU and SEC record, and the third most all-time) while narrowly missing setting the FBS record for completion percentage - he finished at 76.3% after completing 402 of 527 attempts. Burrow led the Tigers to a 15-0 season, including a 42-25 win over Clemson in the College Football Playoff national championship. Burrow was named the Most Outstanding Player of the championship game after throwing for 463 yards and five touchdowns.

"I still can't believe how everything came together for me at LSU," Burrow said. "I had the opportunity to join an amazing team and together we reached and surpassed all of our goals. The state of Louisiana embraced me along the way and became a second home to me. To be recognized as the top athlete in the state is a tremendous honor and I want to thank my teammates and coaches as well as everyone who supported me." LSU coach Ed Orgeron praised Burrow's work ethic. "I've never been around a player like Joe," Orgeron said, "and obviously he's very talented and he's a leader, but day in and day out, he's the same guy. Very focused. Focused on the task at hand. It's about execution and winning and being great. The guy is a perfectionist. It does rub off on our football team. He's an outstanding leader." - Baton Rouge Advocate

Former LSU quarterback Joe Burrow's heartfelt social media post saying the "black community needs our help" after George Floyd's killing is a welcome sight, USA Today's Nancy Armour wrote in a column Saturday. Burrow urged his fans to open their ears and listen to the painful experiences that many black Americans face on a regular basis on Twitter Friday. "They have been unheard for far too long," LSU's former star quarterback wrote. "Open your ears, listen, and speak. This isn't politics. This is human rights." The black community needs our help. They have been unheard for far too long. Open your ears, listen, and speak. This isn't politics. This is human rights. Burrow, Armour writes, is one of several "high-profile, white male athletes finally joining in the fight" against systemic racism. Along with the No. 1 overall pick in the NFL draft, other notable athletes who've spoken out include Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence and the Philadelphia Eagles' Carson Wentz and Zach Ertz. - Baton Rouge Advocate

LSU's Ed Orgeron has been selected as the Allstate Sugar Bowl's Outstanding Collegiate Coach for the State of Louisiana, announced Friday by the Greater New Orleans Sports Awards Committee. After Orgeron and the Tigers blew out Oklahoma in the College Football Playoff semifinal at the Peach Bowl, they capped their legendary season by running away from Clemson in the CFP National Championship in New Orleans. The victory capped a perfect 15-0 season for the Tigers - the most wins in program history. Orgeron's 2019 team set several other school records, including points in a season (726), points per game (48.4) and yards passing (6,024). Orgeron was recognized as the Eddie Robinson Award winner as the top collegiate coach in the nation. The Tigers became the only unit in SEC history to include a 4,000-yard passer, a 1,000-yard rusher and two 1,000-yard receivers in the same season. Joe Burrow, the SEC's Offensive Player of the Year, broke league records for yards passing and touchdowns en route to the Heisman Trophy and the Manning Award. - Baton Rouge Advocate

To say that Dan Enos - hired earlier this year to be the UC Bearcats' running backs coach - is well traveled would be an understatement. UC added Enos in March after jobs as an assistant and/or coordinator at University of Miami, Alabama, Michigan, Arkansas, Michigan State, Western Michigan and Southern Illinois, among others, as well as five seasons as Central Michigan's head coach. Former Miami Hurricanes offensive coordinator Dan Enos prior to the season opener. But in 2003, during his only season at North Dakota State, Enos assessed the talent of fellow NDSU assistant Jimmy Burrow's son, Joe - now the rookie quarterback of the Cincinnati Bengals - at age 7 - according to a report from Forum Communications' Jeff Kolpack: While the newly hired Bison coaches in 2003 worked putting together a program, the kid spent hours in the hallway throwing a Nerf football.

Sometimes it would bounce into the only meeting room. At one point, Bison assistant coach Dan Enos watched the kid throw and was immediately impressed. Assistant Pat Perles was guarded on this assessment. "I'm like, 'Really Danny?'" Perles said on Thursday. "The kid is 7 years old and you're telling me he already has a good throwing motion and you can evaluate it at this age? He says, 'Yeah.'" - Cincinnati Enquirer

A year ago at this time, LSU quarterback Joe Burrow wasn't listed by Las Vegas oddsmakers as a potential Heisman Trophy candidate. Michigan quarterback Shea Patterson was, along with Nebraska quarterback Adrian Martinez and Stanford quarterback K.J. Costello. But not the guy who would shatter Heisman Trophy voting records: Burrow. The LSU senior opened the season with a five-touchdown performance against Georgia Southern. And, voila, Vegas caught on. He was immediately listed as a 28:1 pick, still behind Alabama receiver Jerry Jeudy and Patterson. The point is, we don't know who will win the 2020 Heisman Trophy. I hope it is one of the 100 players on today's list. But based on last season, I wouldn't be stunned if it was someone else. According to oddsmakers, Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields is the current favorite, followed by Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence and Oklahoma quarterback Spencer Rattler. - News Gazette Tribune

Joe Burrow and Dwayne Haskins Jr. once competed for the starting quarterback job at Ohio State. They are set to duel as NFL quarterbacks this fall when the Cincinnati Bengals visit the Washington Redskins on Nov. 22. The Week 11 matchup was announced Thursday night as the league unveiled its 2020 regular-season schedule amid the backdrop of the coronavirus pandemic. The kickoff time for the game is 1 p.m. Cincinnati selected Burrow with the No. 1 overall pick in the draft last month, while Haskins will enter his second season in Washington after he was the franchise's first-round pick last year. Neither has secured the top spot on the depth chart, but will enter preseason training camp as their teams' presumptive starters. - Cleveland Plain Dealer

The impact of Joe Burrow's golden career at LSU may be transforming the reigning national champions into the next Quarterback U. LSU received a commitment from the No. 6-ranked pro style quarterback in the nation on Monday - Garrett Nussmeier (6-foot-2, 182 pounds) of Marcus High School in Flower Mound, Texas. Also on Monday, the No. 1 dual threat quarterback in the nation - Caleb Williams (6-1, 200) of Gonzaga High in Washington D.C. - narrowed his choices to LSU, Oklahoma, and Maryland over such schools as Alabama, Clemson, Georgia, Ohio State, Michigan, and Penn State. "I've been getting a good impression from the LSU coaches," Williams said to Rivals.com. Williams has been recruited by LSU offensive coordinator/quarterback coach Steve Ensminger, who also has recruited Nussmeier. Nussmeier, whose father Doug Nussmeier is the quarterbacks coach for the Dallas Cowboys, committed to LSU over such schools as Texas, Arizona State, Arkansas, Baylor, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Oklahoma State, and TCU. - Daily Advertiser

The NCAA announced last week its name/image/likeness reform that basically will allow athletes to be compensated for endorsements. The initial theories say the rich will get richer in college football, that endorsements will flow in markets that are eat up with the sport. In Birmingham and Oklahoma City and Columbus, a commercial with a campus quarterback might sell a car or two. In Los Angeles and Chicago and New York, not so much. But a few days before the NCAA announcement came an event that sheds more light on the subject of parity. In the NFL Draft, 14 LSU players were selected. Ten each from Michigan and Ohio State went. Toss in the nine draftees from Alabama, and 16.9 percent of the 255 players drafted were from four schools.

In the 27 years since the NFL Draft was reduced to just seven rounds, only thrice have the 10 programs with the most picks in a particular draft accounted for more than 30 percent of the total selections: 30.6 percent in 2006, 31.2 percent in 2017 and 32.5 in 2020. The two most top-heavy drafts in NFL history have come in the last four years, which parallels the advent of the four-team College Football Playoff. The playoff has gained stature; the rest of the college football post-season, including major bowl games when they're not the national semifinals, have slipped. - Daily Oklahoman

LSU's record setting quarterback Joe Burrow garnered a Heisman Trophy, a National Championship and is on his way to being the first pick in this year's NFL Draft. Now he may get a Baton Rouge street named after him. An item is set to go before the East Baton Rouge Planning Commission on March 16 to rename Henry Adams Road to Burrow Road. Henry Adams is a short private road off Highland Road, just southeast of the LSU campus. Cincinnati Bengals owner Mike Brown reportedly officially welcomed LSU quarterback Joe Burrow to the franchise with a letter on Wednesday, which according to ESPN's Adam Schefter, read that Brown was looking forward "to building championship football teams with you for many years to come."   Minutes after being selected No. 1 overall in the 2020 NFL Draft, Joe Burrow got a warm welcome in his new home thanks to LSU football. The program shared a photo of a billboard it placed in Cincinnati, Ohio where Burrow's new team, the Bengals, play. Burrow's selection cemented what had been assumed for months - that the Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback would be going back "home" to Ohio. Burrow is pictured dead center in the billboard wearing his Tigers uniform. The team's familiar purple and gold adorn the left side of the ad with the announcement of Burrow's two most recent accomplishments - "overall No. 1 pick" and "national champion" in bold letters. On the other side of Burrow was a simple, supportive message, "Geaux Bengals" written in Cincinnati's black and orange. Bengals fans will be able to check the billboard out in two locations. The first, in Cincinnati, is located at Interstate-71 northbound near Blair Road. The second, in Covington, Kentucky, is located at Interstate-75 southbound near Pike Street. - Baton Rouge Advocate

The first round of the NFL draft opened and closed with players from the Southeastern Conference, a fitting way to mark the league's record-setting night. The football powerhouse had 15 players selected Thursday, smashing the previous mark of 12 set by the Atlantic Coast Conference in 2006 and matched twice by the SEC (2013, 2017). The SEC's most promising crop to date was flush with players from Alabama (four) and LSU (five). It included reigning Heisman Trophy winner Joe Burrow at the top followed by several more next-level starters - maybe even stars - at nearly every position.

The league fell just short of having as many players drafted in the first round as the rest of college football combined. Oddsmakers had listed the over/under for SEC players at 15 1/2. LSU cornerback Kristian Fulton, Alabama safety Xavier McKinney, Georgia running back D'Andre Swift and Alabama cornerback Trevon Diggs did not come off the board as some expected. They are expected to get selected early in the second round Friday night. Georgia right tackle Isaiah Wilson gave the SEC the new record when Tennessee chose him with the 29th pick. Miami took Auburn cornerback Noah Igbinoghene next to make it 14 from the league. Kansas City capped the first round by drafting LSU running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire. - AP College Football

Despite late trade rumors and early speculation book-ending a canceled pro day and virtual reality, the Bengals did Thursday night what everybody said they were going to do for the past four months when they took LSU quarterback Joe Burrow with the first pick in the NFL's first-ever remote draft. Using their first overall No. 1 selection in 17 years, the Bengals continued to revamp their franchise with a quarterback coming off the best statistical college year of all-time during an undefeated national championship season Burrow fired 60 touchdown passes against just six interceptions with a blistering 80 completion percentage. He joins Archie Griffin and Carson Palmer as the Bengals' only Heisman Trophy winners and a roster that has already undergone a massive facelift this offseason with the addition of six starters in free agency. - Bengals.com

Former LSU quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner Joe Burrow is less than a week away from the start of his NFL career as the presumptive No. 1 overall pick in the NFL draft. To better prepare for his rookie season, Burrow reached out to a familiar face last week, NFL legend Peyton Manning. Manning was a guest on the Sunday morning edition of ESPN's SportsCenter and revealed some of the details of his call with Burrow to host Hannah Storm.

Manning's advice for Burrow focused on becoming a better player through the tough transition from the college game to the pros, especially coming onto a team that "really earned the first pick in the draft." "There are going to be some holes there," Manning said. "There's a reason the Colts were picking No. 1 (the year I was drafted). There's a reason the Bengals are picking No. 1 this year. Other people have to step up to give him some help." Manning used his own rough start to his successful pro career as a reference for Burrow, telling him "it's a marathon, it's not a sprint." - Baton Rouge Advocate

Eight former LSU football players will take part in the NFL draft broadcast on April 23-25, the NFL announced on Thursday. Those eight are quarterback Joe Burrow, linebacker K'Lavon Chaisson, center Lloyd Cushenberry, safety Grant Delpit, cornerback Kristian Fulton, wide receiver Justin Jefferson, tight end Thaddeus Moss and linebacker Patrick Queen. There were 58 players from around the country confirmed to participate in the new draft days set up, as the upcoming NFL draft will be completely virtual due to the coronavirus pandemic. LSU's eight leads all colleges with players taking part, with Alabama having seven players participating in the event. The SEC overall has 24 prospects participating. - Baton Rouge Advocate

After leading LSU to the CFP national championship, winning the Heisman Trophy and setting an NCAA FBS single-season record for touchdown passes, quarterback Joe Burrow is the odds-on favorite to be the first player picked in the 2020 NFL Draft. The 85th NFL Draft is scheduled for April 23-25, with the opening night devoted to the first round. The Cincinnati Bengals hold the first selection. If the Bengals (or a trading partner) make Burrow the first of the 32 opening-round selections, the quarterback would become the 20th former SEC player to be the No. 1 pick. It also would be the 11th time that LSU has provided the first player drafted from the conference. An LSU player hasn't been the first pick from the conference since 2007, when the Oakland Raiders used the No. 1 selection on Tigers quarterback JaMarcus Russell, a former Williamson High School star.

Twelve LSU players have been first-round choices since then, including eight among the top six picks, but none was the first selection from the SEC. The first SEC player picked in the 2019 NFL Draft was Alabama defensive lineman Quinnen Williams, who went to the New York Jets with the third choice. That marked the 13th time that an Alabama player had been the first SEC selection, the most in the conference. If Burrow beats Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa off the draft board on April 23, the 2020 NFL Draft would be the 28th in a row without the same SEC member providing the first player picked in consecutive years. That most recently happened in the 1991 and 1992 drafts, with Tennessee offensive tackle Charles McRae joining the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at No. 7 in 1991 and Volunteers defensive back Dale Carter joining the Kansas City Chiefs at No. 20 in 1992. - Birmingham News

The NFL is moving forward with optimism that it will have a season this fall. Apparently, the NFL Draft from April 23-25 will take place. The New Orleans Saints are moving their draft war room to the Dixie Beer brewery and are preparing to stay there for the duration. The NFL is a different animal than college athletics, which is taking a different view of its financial future. The bottom line for the NFL is the bottom line. Not saying the league doesn't care about the health of its players and fans, but the NFL has contracts with TV and sponsors that have to be considered, too. The NFL did say it is basing its optimism on expert medical opinions.

It appears the colleges have different medical experts. An extensive survey of FBS athletic directors left a more gloomy picture about future finances. Among the conclusions of Lead1 Association's annual FBS AD survey is the potential for a financial crisis to hit college sports. An overwhelming 86% of ADs believe their universities will require their athletic departments to make "financial sacrifices" because of the crisis. More than one-third of ADs forecast at least a 30% decrease in revenue for the upcoming 2020-21 academic year. That compares to only 8% in that category for the current fiscal year ending June 30. - Northwest Arkansas Times

For months Joe Burrow to the Bengals at the top of the NFL draft has been one of the few things set in stone, even as a coronavirus pandemic undid the best laid plans for a Las Vegas event. But the asset-rich Miami Dolphins remain intent on chipping away at a bit of that, according to report from xxx of the Miami Herald. "The Dolphins, as you have read in this space, will make an attempt at that opportunity at some point," writes Dolphins columnist Armando Salguero, who initially reported the team's interest earlier in the month. "It ... could be in vain because the Cincinnati Bengals are said to highly value the No. 1 pick."

There's been no indication the Bengals, in Burrow's home state of Ohio and in dire need of a quarterback, would move the pick, but if any team could get them to the table, it'd be the Bengals. The Dolphins own three first-round picks, Nos. 5, 18 and 26, and two second-round picks among their nine total picks in top four rounds of the 2020 draft. They also own an extra first- and second-round picks in the 2021 draft, all of which could be worked into a monster deal to move up those four spots to No. 1. The Bengals own all seven of their original picks, but no additional ones in either of those drafts. If Cincinnati did move that pick, it'd join a select number of teams that have done so. The most recent such trade came in 2016 when the then-St. Louis Rams moved up from No. 15 to No. 1 to draft quarterback Jared Goff. - Baton Rouge Advocate

NFL vice president Troy Vincent has sent a letter to several prospects inviting them to participate “live” in the NFL draft in three weeks. The Associated Press on Tuesday obtained the letter sent by the league's football operations chief to prospective early selections in the draft, which will be held remotely on April 23-25 due to the coronavirus pandemic. "We hope that you will start your NFL journey with us as part of the NFL family," Vincent wrote. “At this time, we are working on the plan for draft. As you can imagine, it is a bit of a moving target with all that is going on. "We are contemplating several options that we will be communicating to you once details are confirmed. We want to ensure that you and your family stay safe while we develop the best way to give you a great experience and highlight your accomplishments as you are drafted into the NFL."   Joe Burrow's rapid ascension up the 2020 NFL Draft board is a journey to marvel at. Burrow started his redshirt season at LSU as a mid- to late-round draft prospect. At the conclusion of his record-breaking season, which culminated in a Heisman Trophy and national championship, he became the consensus No.1 pick in April's draft. Everything that I've seen on tape, there's been nothing on there that says he can't make any throw that you're asking him to make," said Brian Callahan, the Bengals offensive coordinator. "I have no reservations about his ability to throw the ball at every spot on the field in the NFL."

Callahan is one of the Bengals staff members who's watched all of Burrow's snaps at LSU. Callahan thinks Burrow, Tagovailoa and Oregon's Justin Herbert will all be NFL starting quarterbacks. All three signal callers are projected to be drafted in the top six. It is Burrow, though, who has the Bengals chomping at the bit. Turn on Burrow's film from his redshirt senior season and it's easy to recognize why teams in the top five of the draft such as the Bengals and Dolphins are so eager to make him their franchise quarterback. The 6-foot-3, 221-pound quarterback possesses NFL-ready attributes. His football IQ, pocket awareness and his ability to throw with accuracy and anticipation are his best traits. Those qualities are essentially why it's inevitable that he'll be a Cincinnati Bengal come April 23. - Democrat and Chronicle

An NFL draft handled remotely because of the coronavirus pandemic is the latest twist to an event that has become as popular as any pro football happening short of the Super Bowl. Roger Goodell alerted NFL teams in a memo Thursday night that the dates of this year's draft would remain April 23-25. There has been chatter from franchises about wanting it pushed back, and Goodell threatened disciplinary action against any teams publicly criticizing the decision. So next month's draft, originally set for Las Vegas, will have a pretty much unadorned look. And with club facilities shut at least through April 8 and likely for much longer, Goodell told the teams: "All clubs should now be doing the necessary planning to conduct draft operations in a location outside of your facility, with a limited number of people present, and with sufficient technology resources to allow you to communicate internally, with other clubs, and with draft headquarters. "Needless to say,” he added, 'we will be prepared to adjust to changed circumstances in the next several weeks, including the prospect of clubs being able to resume even limited operations within their facilities." The draft will be televised and, given the scarcity of sports offerings, the ratings for this "selection meeting" could be impressive. As is the history of the draft. - The Associated Press

Former LSU quarterback Joe Burrow made a huge impact on food bank and charitable donations in his home state of Ohio and adopted home state of Louisiana in December with his impassioned Heisman Trophy acceptance speech. Wednesday he was at it again, imploring people to take precautions during the coronavirus pandemic but also again to help the needy if they can. "What's up everybody?" asked Burrow in the message posted Wednesday morning. "Obviously a crazy time for everybody right now. I think it's more important now than ever to follow directions that the government lays out. Right now, they're saying to stay inside, self-quarantine, wash your hands, limit the spread of this virus so we can flatten the curve (of new infections) a little bit and get back to a normal life. The only way we can do that is if we follow instructions. "Everyone wants this to end as quickly as possible. We just have to do everything in our power to limit the spread of this and flatten the curve."

Burrow went on to talk about at-risk school-age children who are at home right now because of the coronavirus shutdowns, and the need to try to support them through food bank donations. "I think something really important right now is a lot of kids in Ohio get their meals from school. I think donations to the food bank, if you're financially able, is really important right now for a lot of people," he said. "So everyone stay inside, stay quarantined and go Tigers!" - Baton Rouge Advocate

The NFL draft in Las Vegas in late April has yet to be altered because of the coronavirus pandemic, but the way teams will prepare for the event is being significantly changed. The NFL sent a memo to teams Friday prohibiting them from visiting draft prospects or inviting those players to their facilities "until further notice." Teams are permitted to host 30 prospects before the draft. The 49ers haven't hosted a prospect this spring. The decision ended pro days, at least temporarily. Stanford and Cal had pro days scheduled for Thursday and Friday, respectively. "After considering recent medical and public safety information related to COVID-19, we have decided to prohibit in-person pre-Draft visits involving draft-eligible players effective at the end of this business day, until further notice," the league said in a statement.

The NFL's directive came after many teams had already made similar changes to help stop the spread of the coronavirus. On Thursday, for example, the 49ers announced they would shut down operations at their team facility and Levi's Stadium and instruct everyone with the exception of a few employees to work remotely. Coaches and scouts on the road were instructed to return home by the weekend. Per NFL guidelines, teams can contact prospects. They are allowed to have no more three phone calls with a player in a week leading up to the draft. - San Francisco Chronicle

NFL teams are curtailing or completely stopping scouting operations as a safeguard against the spread of the new coronavirus. The Washington Redskins, Minnesota Vikings, Miami Dolphins, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Tennessee Titans, Pittsburgh Steelers and New York Jets are among those that have ordered their scouts and assistant coaches to return home in what typically is a busy time for evaluating college players. The NFL draft is scheduled for April 23-25 in Las Vegas. Many teams have told employees to work remotely. "Due to health and travel concerns surrounding COVID-19, we have informed all of our scouts and coaches that they must return to their home bases and travel will be suspended until further notice," Redskins owner Daniel Snyder said in a statement Thursday.

"The health and safety of our staff and players is our number one priority and we feel that these are the necessary precautions given the current circumstances." Soon after, the Vikings announced a similar decision. "...We are also suspending travel for our coaches and scouts until further notice and reviewing restrictions on large public gatherings in the near future,” a team statement said. “These are uncertain times, and our priority is to protect the health and safety of our players, coaches, staff and fans and do our part to minimize the spread of this virus." The Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs have instructed all nonessential team personnel to work remotely for a minimum of 14 days beginning Monday. They also have suspended business travel and all nonessential travel for coaches and scouts. - AP College Football

Who wouldn't want to follow in the footsteps of John Elway and Eli Manning? Joe Burrow, that's who. The Heisman Trophy winner, national champion and consensus No. 1 pick in next month's draft said Tuesday at the NFL scouting combine that he'd have no qualms playing in Cincinnati, which owns the top choice. "Yeah, I'm not going to not play," the LSU star quarterback replied when asked if he would report to the Bengals should they select him No. 1 overall on April 23 in Las Vegas. "I'm a ballplayer. Whoever picks me, I'm going to go show up."

Burrow, who grew up in Athens, Ohio, and initially attended Ohio State, said he'd love to play professionally in his home state. "Yeah, absolutely. It's 2 hours, 15 minutes from my house,” Burrow said. "I could go home for dinner if I wanted to." Burrow said on Dan Patrick's radio show last month that it was important for him to keep winning in the NFL and that while he wanted to be the first overall pick, "you also want to go to a great organization that is committed to winning. Committed to winning Super Bowls." The Bengals haven't won a Super Bowl since entering the league in 1968. - AP College Football

LSU star Joe Burrow has been selected as the 2019 winner of the Manning Award, presented by the Allstate Sugar Bowl to the top quarterback in the nation. The Manning honor caps one of the most impressive seasons by a quarterback in college football history. The Manning Award, now in its 16th year, was created by the Allstate Sugar Bowl to honor the college football accomplishments of Archie, Peyton and Eli Manning. It is the only quarterback award that takes into consideration the candidates' bowl performances in its balloting. The award is voted on by a panel of local and national media, as well as each of the Mannings.

LSU's national championship game victory against Clemson drew nearly 26 million viewers to ESPN, up slightly from last year's final. ESPN said Tuesday that viewership for the three-game College Football Playoff increased 4% from last season, when Clemson beat Alabama in the championship. The network's championship game megacast, which includes ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU and ESPNews, drew 25.6 million viewers. Last year's megacast had 25.3 million viewers. The ESPN-only audience was also up over last year, from 24.3 million to 25 million. Joe Burrow, the Heisman Trophy winner, led No. 1 LSU to a 42-25 victory Monday night in New Orleans. The game was 28-25 in the third quarter before LSU surged and put away the title early in the fourth quarter.   Joe Burrow threw five touchdown passes, ran for another score and capped one of the greatest seasons in college football history by leading No. 1 LSU to a 42-25 victory against No. 3 Clemson on Monday night to win the national championship. The small-town Ohio kid turned Louisiana legend delivered the Tigers (15-0) their first national title since 2007 and fourth overall, breaking a few more records along the way in what was already an historic season. The five TD passes and 463 yards passing are the most for a BCS or College Football Playoff title game as are his six total touchdowns. He became the first major college quarterback to throw 60 touchdown passes in a season as LSU snapped defending national champion Clemson's 29-game winning streak. For the first time in his college career, Clemson star quarterback Trevor Lawrence was on the losing team. The Tigers (14-1) had won his first 25 starts.

But on this night, Lawrence (18 for 37 for 234 yards) was no match for Burrow - the Ohio State transferred who threw all of 16 TD passes last season with LSU. His ascent has been dizzying and unprecedented. Running a version of the New Orleans Saints' offense that was brought to LSU by 30-year-old assistant coach Joe Brady, Burrow and an array of talented receivers transformed these Tigers into one of the most prolific offenses college football has ever seen. It was coach Ed Orgeron's vision for LSU when he was promoted from interim coach in 2016. There was plenty of skepticism when LSU tabbed the Cajun who had failed in his first crack at head coach with Mississippi. Orgeron has proved to be the perfect fit. Just like Burrow. - AP College Football

Top-ranked LSU faces No. 3 Clemson for the college football national championship Monday night at the Superdome in New Orleans. Both sets of Tigers are 14-0, seeking to cap a perfect season. President Donald Trump is expected to be among those in attendance. It's practically a home game for LSU. Its campus is just 90 minutes away and purple-and-gold clad supporters could be found all around New Orleans.

There were plenty of orange-wearing Clemson fans on the streets, hoping their team wins a second straight national championship. A second-story veranda near Jackson Square boasted Clemson flags from its 2016 and 2018 national titles, along with an inflatable Tiger figure. Clemson is after its third crown in four seasons and its 30th straight victory. LSU is seeking its first national championship since 2007 and first in the CFP era. - AP College Football

Joe Burrow turned in the greatest performance yet in his Heisman Trophy season, throwing for seven touchdowns and 493 yards as No. 1 LSU romped to a breathtaking 63-28 victory over No. 4 Oklahoma in the Peach Bowl semifinal game Saturday. The Tigers (14-0) headed to the national championship game against either No. 2 Ohio State or No. 3 Clemson clicking on all cylinders, having dismantled the Sooners (12-2) with a first half for the ages. Burrow tied the record for any college bowl game with his seven TD passes - which all came before the bands hit the field for the halftime show at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Justin Jefferson was on the receiving end for four of those scoring plays, also tying a bowl record. For good measure, Burrow scored an eighth TD himself on a 3-yard run in the third quarter, thoroughly dominating his expected duel with Oklahoma quarterback Jalen Hurts, the Heisman runner-up.

The impressive victory came with heavy hearts. Shortly before the game, LSU offensive coordinator Steve Ensminger learned that his daughter-in-law, broadcaster Carley McCord, was among five people killed in a plane crash in Louisiana. The small plane went down shortly after takeoff for what was supposed to be a flight to Atlanta for the game. Ensminger had tears running down his cheeks during warm-ups, but he was in his usual spot high above the field when the game kicked off, calling plays along with passing game coordinator Joe Brady. It was a brilliant, poignant performance in the face of such tragedy. The players didn't learn until afterward what Ensminger was going through. - AP College Football

2019 HEISMAN TROPHY WINNER: For the first time in 60 years, an LSU Football player has staked his claim to the highest individual honor in collegiate sports, the Heisman Memorial Trophy. Senior quarterback Joe Burrow was announced as the 2019 winner at a ceremony at New York's PlayStation Theater on Saturday evening. Burrow became the second player from LSU to win the award, joining late halfback Billy Cannon, who was announced as the winner on Dec. 1, 1959. As a graduate transfer, Burrow signed to play his remaining two seasons of eligibility for LSU on the day Cannon passed away: May 20, 2018. "I'd like to thank Louisiana, the entire state," Burrow said after thanking his teammates, family and coaches. "Just a kid from Ohio coming down chasing a dream. And the entire state has just welcomed me and my family with open arms, and invited us in to be native Louisianians. I've learned to love crawfish and gumbo.

"Coach O," Burrow continued, fighting back tears. "You have no idea what you mean to my family. I didn't play for three years. You took a chance on me, not knowing if I could play or not. And I'm forever grateful for you. Can you imagine a guy like Coach O give the keys to his football program? It just means so much to me and my family." The vote was a runaway. Burrow set Heisman Trophy records for receiving the highest percentage of first-place votes in history (90.7 percent), broke O.J. Simpson's largest margin of victory (1,846 points), earned the highest percentage of possible points (93.8 percent) and the highest percentage of ballots received (95.5 percent). - LSU Football

LSU (13-0) returns to Atlanta to face No. 4 Oklahoma (12-1) in a Dec. 28 Peach Bowl semifinal. Burrow has completed 77.9% of his passes and is on pace to break the Football Bowl Subdivision single-season completion percentage record owned by Colt McCoy, who completed 76.7% of his attempts in 2008. He has thrown for 4,715 yards and 48 touchdowns - both SEC single-season records - with only six interceptions. Burrow has helped LSU score 47.8 points per game, good for third place among all FBS teams. "The best thing about Joe is he's a team player," Orgeron said after the SEC championship game. "All he wants to do is win this game. Individual awards are not high on his list." - LSU/AP College Football

Joe Burrow finished off what seems like his Heisman Trophy coronation with another dazzling performance and No. 1 LSU locked up a spot in the College Football Playoff for the first time, dominating No. 4 Georgia 37-10 in the Southeastern Conference championship game Saturday. The Tigers, going for their first national title since 2007 season, will either return to Atlanta or head west to suburban Phoenix for a semifinal game on Dec. 28. Their bowl site and opponent will be announced on Sunday, but they surely made a persuasive case to be the top overall seed in the four-team field. Burrow was all over the stat sheet for LSU (13-0, No. 2 CFP). He threw for 349 yards and four touchdowns. He was the Tigers' second-leading rusher with 41 yards on 11 carries, often leaving the Bulldogs grasping at air as he twirled this way and that. He even caught a pass on a ball that was batted down at the line and wound up his arms, taking off for a 16-yard gain. - LSU/AP College Football

Joe Burrow padded his Heisman Trophy resume with 352 yards and three touchdowns passing and No.1 LSU beat Texas A&M 50-7 on Saturday night to give the Tigers their first unbeaten regular season since 2011. Burrow's night was highlighted by a deep, pin-point accurate pass on a 78-yard touchdown strike to JaMarr Chase, who had 197 yards and two touchdowns on seven catches. Burrow also hit Justin Jefferson with a 12-yard scoring pass, while his second scoring pass to Chase covered 18 yards. Burrow has 4,366 yards and 44 touchdowns passing this season, smashing LSU single-season records in both categories. Burrow's yards passing total also broke the SEC record, which had stood since 1998, when former Kentucky quarterback Tim Couch passed for 4,275 yards.

Burrow's 44 TDs has tied the SEC's single season mark set by Missouri's Drew Lock in 2017. And LSU (12-0, 8-0 Southeastern Conference, No. 2 CFP) has at least two games - possibly three - still to play. Burrow ceremoniously left the game after opening a possession with his 23rd completion early in the fourth quarter. He raised his arms to salute the Tiger Stadium crowd, which went wild as he jogged to the sideline and embraced coach Ed Orgeron before exchanging more hugs with seemingly every coach and teammate in the bench area. Soon afterward, junior running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire was beckoned by coaches to the sideline in a similar manner, finishing his night with 87 yards and a touchdown. - LSU/AP College Football
