Alex Delton, Texas Christian, Player News

Graduate transfer quarterback Alex Delton has left TCU's team after not playing in the past two games. Coach Gary Patterson acknowledged the departure of Delton during his weekly news conference Tuesday. The transfer from Kansas State was named a team captain at the beginning of the season and started the first two games for the Horned Frogs. Patterson said Delton obviously wanted to play more. Freshman Max Duggan has started the past six games. Duggan is dealing with an injured middle finger on his throwing hand sustained in Saturday's 34-27 loss at Oklahoma State. Michael Collins came in for Duggan and took a hard shot to the midsection on TCU's last offensive play. Patterson said he thinks Duggan will play Saturday against No. 11 Baylor, but that Collins probably won't for the Frogs (4-4). - AP College Football

TCU has two weeks before its next game with Purdue, and coach Gary Patterson said that will give everyone the chance to continue all the guessing about who will emerge as the Horned Frogs' primary quarterback. Not much was decided Saturday night as TCU debuted two quarterbacks in graduate transfer Alex Delton and true freshman Max Duggan. Both were ho-hum in leading TCU to a 39-7 victory over FCS school Arkansas-Pine Bluff in the season opener for both teams.

Delton, who played 14 games with six starts the last two seasons at Kansas State, started but shared time with Duggan. Delton was more impressive running the ball (67 yards rushing on seven carries) than passing (10 for 22 for 119 yards). Duggan led all three of the Horned Frogs' touchdown drives and finished 16-for-23 passing for 165 yards. "I thought they stayed pretty composed," said TCU senior receiver TreVontae Hights, who set a career high with eight catches for 108 yards. "Their leadership was great. I feel comfortable with either one of them." - AP College Football

Graduate transfer Alex Delton will be the starting quarterback for TCU's season opener, and true freshman Max Duggan will also play in the first quarter against Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Saturday. Coach Gary Patterson said Tuesday the competition was good and that "a lot of guys keep pushing." Patterson also said senior running back Sewo Olonilua won't play in the first half Saturday. Olonilua, who set a school bowl record with 194 yards rushing in the Cheez-It Bowl, was arrested in May on possible drug charges in Walker County, Texas.

Delton got the starting edge at quarterback because of experience. He played 14 games with six starts the last two seasons at Kansas State, and was a team captain last year. Former Penn transfer Michael Collins started four games late last season for TCU before a right ankle injury that forced him to miss all of spring drills, then missed about two weeks of practice this month because of a foot injury. - AP College Football

Gary Patterson isn't sure where his team would be if Alex Delton hadn't decided to join the program. "To be honest with you," Patterson said at Big 12 Media Days on Monday, "he saved us." Delton, a graduate transfer who spent the last four seasons at Kansas State, came to the rescue at a time when Patterson's TCU squad lacked able-bodied quarterbacks in the spring. Former TCU signal-caller Shawn Robinson transferred to Missouri at the end of last season.

The quarterbacks who remained on campus in Fort Worth, Texas, had their own issues. Mike Collins was out with an injury. Justin Rogers wasn't at optimum health, either. And Max Duggan is only a freshman. So adding a fifth-year senior in Delton was a godsend for the Horned Frogs. "You had a guy that came in, rolled his sleeves up, went through our off-season which is not easy, did a great job with that," Patterson said of Delton, who played in 20 games with six starts in his four years with the Wildcats. "He's woven himself into being one of the guys on our team. I think he's helped our team chemistry quite a bit." - Manhattan Mercury
