Brian Delaney kicked a 48-yard field with 1:23 to play to put Virginia ahead and the Cavaliers sealed it with a defensive score, beating No. 23 Virginia Tech 39-30 Friday to end a 15-game losing streak in the rivalry and earn their first trip to the Atlantic Coast Conference championship game. Bryce Perkins ran for two long touchdowns and passed for another for the Cavaliers (9-3, 6-2), who became the seventh different winner in as many years to claim the Coastal Division. Delaney also kicked a 25-yard field goal for Virginia, and his last kick made up for a missed extra point early. Hendon Hooker ran for one touchdown and threw for another for the Hokies (8-4, 5-3), who came in having won six of seven games to surge into championship contention.

The Cavaliers' winning drive began with Noah Taylor's interception of Hooker's pass at the Virginia 35. Virginia moved steadily downfield, not facing a third down play until it was third-and-15 from the Hokies' 40. Perkins hit Tavares Kelly for nine yards and Delaney converted the kick, setting off a cautious celebration. On the Hokies ensuing possession, the Cavaliers sacked Hooker on three straight plays. Mandy Alonso had the last one, forcing a fumble that Eli Hanback recovered in the end zone, finally giving the Virginia faithful enough cushion to celebrate the end of the Hokies’ decade-and-a-half of domination. Virginia led 13-6 after a defensive first half, but then the offenses took over. - AP College Football

Bryce Perkins threw for two touchdowns and ran for another and Virginia beat Liberty 55-27 Saturday. Perkins hit Terrell Jana for 8 yards and Joe Reed for 7 and scored on a 1-yard run for the Cavaliers (8-3). They survived looking ahead to next Friday's game against No. 25 Virginia Tech with a chance to win their first Coastal Division title in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Stephen Calvert threw for two touchdowns for the Flames (6-5), but also provided the game-changing play for Virginia. The Flames led 17-14 until Calvert, trying to throw the ball away, instead found cornerback De'Vante Cross, Calvert's first interception in 296 attempts.

Cross returned the ball 52 yards to the Flames' 42, rejuvenating the Cavaliers, and Lamont Atkins scored from the 3 five plays later. Calvert threw another interception, also to Cross, on another deep ball with Liberty driving late in the fourth quarter. Mike Hollins and PK Kier also had scoring runs for the Cavaliers. Backup quarterback Brennan Armstrong completed a 44-yard scoring pass to Dontayvion Wick for the Cavaliers' final score with 1:58 remaining. - Virginia/AP College Football

Bryce Perkins loves that new playmakers are emerging for Virginia, making their best playmaker -- Perkins himself -- even more effective. The senior quarterback threw for one touchdown and ran for another as the Cavaliers shut down Georgia Tech after halftime in a 33-28 victory Saturday. "It's incredible, especially hard on defensive coordinators trying to scheme personnel-wise for players," Perkins said after throwing for 258 yards and running for 106 more, his second consecutive game with over 100 yards on the ground. "The more we can get guys going, the more difficult it's going to be."

Perkins completed 24 of 35 attempts and hit six different receivers, led by Terrell Jana with nine catches for 108 yards. Jana caught 13 passes for 146 yards a week ago in a victory against North Carolina, giving him 22 receptions in two weeks after he'd managed only 31 in the first eight games. "He's reliable and he's always in the right spot," Perkins said. "I just have a connection with him just knowing where he's going to be at most of the time." Perkins also hit Billy Kemp with a critical third-down pass as the Cavaliers ran the last 5:30 off the clock to ice the game. - Virginia/AP College Football

Virginia limped in with losses in three of its last four games. Thanks to a huge night from their quarterback and a couple of timely stops, the Cavaliers are now in control of their division. Bryce Perkins amassed 490 total yards and accounted for five touchdowns to help Virginia beat North Carolina 38-31 on Saturday night. Perkins threw three touchdown passes and ran for 112 yards and two scores as the Cavaliers (6-3, 4-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) took over sole possession of first place in the ACC's Coastal Division. They also became bowl-eligible for the third consecutive season. "We're not done yet," Perkins said. "We've got to keep going to complete our goals."

Perkins gave Virginia the lead for good on the second play of the second half, scrambling through North Carolina's defense for a career-long 65-yard touchdown. The play was part of an avalanche of points for the Cavaliers, who trailed 17-10 late in the second quarter before scoring touchdowns on four consecutive possessions. The Tar Heels twice had a chance to tie the game late in the fourth quarter. Their best opportunity came from Virginia's 6-yard line with five minutes remaining, when Sam Howell's fourth-down pass to Beau Corrales was incomplete. "We knew we had to get a stop," Virginia defensive end Eli Hanback said. "There was no other option." Howell was 15 of 29 for 353 yards and four touchdowns for North Carolina (4-5, 3-3). - Virginia/AP College Football

Bryce Perkins threw for two touchdowns and ran for a third and Virginia drubbed William & Mary 52-17 on Friday night. Joe Reed caught a 40-yard touchdown pass and returned a kickoff 100 yards for the Cavaliers (2-0), who spoiled the return of former coach Mike London, who now is coaching the Tribe. Virginia led 21-0 by the end of the first quarter and 35-3 at halftime. William & Mary (1-1) got its only points against Virginia's first team after recovering a muffed punt at the Cavaliers' 13 yard-line in the second quarter. The Tribe began the fourth quarter trailing 45-10 and having gained just 75 yards. The Tribe intercepted Perkins twice, ending his string of 145 passes without an interception, and got another pick when Arman Jones picked off backup Brennan Armstrong and returned it 47 yards for a score.

William & Mary has forced four turnovers in both of its games. Perkins' other touchdown pass was a 15-yarder to transfer Terrell Chatman, his roommate when they started their careers at Arizona State. The Cavaliers also scored on Nick Grant's 85-yard interception return and freshman Mike Hollins' 9-yard run on his first college attempt. Hollins later added a 1-yard scoring run. - AP College Football

Down a point at the half on the road against a team it knew it had to beat if it wanted to legitimately contend in the Atlantic Coast Conference, Virginia coach Bronco Mendenhall wondered how his players would react. The answer may have provided the foundation for what the Cavaliers hope is a breakout season. Virginia overwhelmed Pittsburgh in the second half of a 30-14 victory on Saturday night, a performance in which the Cavaliers showed Mendenhall how far they've come in his three-plus years on the job. "The program just looks more seasoned," Mendenhall said. "There weren't the wild ups and the wild downs and the crazy miscues. It just looks like we are maturing, a more seasoned program."

One that finally pushed back after largely getting pushed around by the Panthers since Pitt joined the ACC in 2013. The Panthers won five of the previous six meetings largely by manhandling Virginia when it mattered. Not this time. The Cavaliers sacked Pitt quarterback Kenny Pickett four times, picked him off twice and rarely let him get comfortable. "We knew each game was going to come down to who was more physical, who wants it more," Virginia quarterback Bryce Perkins said. "That's exactly what happened. The last few years, they were more physical than us. I think this year we made an emphasis to be more physical than them." Perkins threw for 181 yards and two touchdowns and the Cavaliers (1-0, 1-0 ACC) took advantage of a series of Panther miscues to win in Pittsburgh for the first time in program history. - AP College Football

2019 PRESEASON DAVEY O'BRIEN NATIONAL QUARTERBACK AWARD WATCH LIST: Bryce Perkins, Virginia, Sr., 6-3, 215, Queen Creek, Ariz.,...Perkins (Sr., Queen Creek, Ariz.) set a UVA single-season record with 3,603 yards of total offense in 2018, which ranked No. 3 in the ACC and No. 21 in the nation. He and Heisman Trophy winner Kyler Murray (Oklahoma) were the only two players last season with 2,600+ passing yards and 900+ rushing yards.

In fact, Perkins and Murray are the only FBS players since 2000 to complete 64+ percent of their passes, while throwing for 2,000+ yards, rushing for 900+ yards and being responsible for 30+ touchdowns. Perkins was No. 1 in the ACC and No. 13 in the nation with 206 points responsible for. Perkins has already been named to the Maxwell Award preseason watch list. - Virginia Football
