Without a selection to make during the final day of this year's NFL draft, the New Orleans Saints and coach Sean Payton began turning their attention to the incoming undrafted free agent pool they would have to move on the moment the draft ended. When on e of their desired players had a deal lined up elsewhere, the team sprung into action, Payton told reporters Thursday. The Saints began a dialogue with Mississippi State quarterback Tommy Stevens and his agent, Buddy Baker. They quickly discovered Steven s had a deal lined up with the Carolina Panthers. Letting Stevens go to a NFC South division rival wasn't going to sit well with Payton, although the quarterback's motivations made sense. He had worked with Panthers offensive coordinator Joe Brady, then a graduate assistant, at Penn State, where Stevens had started his collegiate career. "It became my project," Payton said, per ESPN. "There's no way I was going to lose this kid."Payton informed Baker the Saints would match Carolina's offer, then dangled $144,000 guaranteed. Stevens didn't budge. He wanted to honor the verbal commitment he had made to the Panthers. So Payton pulled off a maneuver that took the situation out of Stevens' hands. The Saints dealt a sixth-round selection in next year' s draft for the 240th overall pick. Payton said he texted Brady, his former assistant and former LSU passing game coordinator, "Not so fast." Mississippi State fired Joe Moorhead after just two seasons Friday, making the unusual decision to dismiss a coach after a bowl game. The Bulldogs went 14-12 under Moorhead, who was previously the offensive coordinator at Penn State. He was hired after t he 2017 season when Dan Mullen left Mississippi State for Florida. "It is clear the time has come to change the leadership of our football program," Mississippi State President Mark Keenum said in a statement. "Coach Moorhead is a good man, and I have no thing but respect for him. I sincerely wish the very best for him and his wonderful family." Mississippi State scheduled an afternoon news conference. Athletic director John Cohen said associate head coach Tony Hughes will serve as interim head coach whi le the school searches for a permanent successor. - AP College Football

Mississippi State got a rare late-season break from SEC play on Saturday and took advantage of the opportunity. Tommy Stevens had two touchdown passes and ran for another as Mississippi State defeated Abilene Christian 45-7 on Saturday. Stevens had 165 y ards passing and 88 yards rushing in the Bulldogs' final nonconference outing of the season. Kylin Hill added 153 yards rushing and had 88 yards receiving and a touchdown for Mississippi State (5-6). The Bulldogs rolled up 577 yards of offense and had 37 2 yards rushing."We did some good things in the run game and our defense held them to seven points," said Mississippi State coach Joe Moorhead. "But at the end of the day I was pleased with the win and we're ready to move forward with Egg Bowl wee k. We needed to execute in all three phases and have a sense of urgency and we saw that at times." Hill averaged 9.6 yards per carry against Abilene Christian and his 88-yard touchdown reception was the longest of his career. For the season the junior ta ilback has now rushed for 1,325 yards, which leads the SEC. "I've changed my running style and you have to change it up when they stack the box," said Hill. Mississippi State quarterback Tommy Stevens was benched in favor of Shrader after the Penn State graduate transfer went 6 of 11 for 67 yards and throwing two interceptions in the first half. Mississippi State starting quarterback Tommy Stevens' status for its Southeastern Conference opener Saturday with Kentucky remains uncertain after a shoulder injury knocked him out of each of the Bulldogs' last two games. Bulldogs coach Joe Moorhead desc ribed Stevens' situation Monday as "day to day." "It was way better (Sunday) and again today than it was at this point last week," Moorhead said. Moorhead added that Stevens felt "way better" Sunday than at this point a week ago.Stevens played the first half of a 31-24 loss to Kansas State last week but left early in the third quarter after throwing his second interception of the game. Stevens went 7 of 15 for 100 yards with two interceptions and one touchdown pass. A week earlier, Stevens went 9 of 10 for 105 yards with two touchdown passes in a 38-15 victory over Southern Mississippi before the shoulder problem forced him to leave late in the first half. Tommy Stevens had to wait a long time for his first start as a college quarterback. But the wait was worth it. Stevens passed for two touchdowns and ran for one as Mississippi State defeated Louisiana-Lafayette 38-28 on Saturday in the Mercedes-Benz Supe rdome. The former Penn State backup who learned from Bulldogs' second-year coach Joe Moorhead when Moorhead was the Nittany Lions' offensive coordinator, completed 20 of 30 passes for 236 yards.He had passes of 31 yards to Osirus Mitchell on the g ame's first possession and 12 yard to Austin Williams early in the fourth quarter to complete a 21-0 run. "I texted Tommy last night," Moorhead said. "I told him this is the opportunity you've worked your whole life for. Go out, play loose and have fun. "I thought it was a good positive step for the rest of the season." Penn State graduate transfer Tommy Stevens has won the starting quarterback job at Mississippi State. Stevens beat out junior Keytaon Thompson and will start Aug. 31 in New Orleans when the Bulldogs' meet Louisiana-Lafayette in their season opener. Missi ssippi State coach Joe Moorhead is very familiar with Stevens from their shared history at Penn State. Moorhead was Penn State's offensive coordinator from 2016-17, while Stevens was a reserve quarterback for the Nittany Lions from 2016-18."It was a great, great competition," Moorhead said Thursday. "Both guys are similar in size and provide equal threats in the run game. We said the decision making was going to come down to who could create explosive plays, who could minimize turnovers and who c an throw the ball with the best accuracy on a consistent manner. So we informed the team that Tommy Stevens has earned the right to be the starting quarterback for this year." The 6-foot-5 Stevens went 24 of 41 for 304 yards with four touchdown passes an d one interception in 23 games at Penn State. Stevens also rushed for 506 yards and eight touchdowns, and he caught 14 passes for 62 yards and two scores. Stevens, who was coached by Joe Moorhead for two years when he was the offensive coordinator at Penn State, said Moorhead's offense at Mississippi State is "pretty much all the same." He said the only difference has been the way some plays are signaled. Stevens, now early in his third year under Moorhead's tutelage, said he feels more like a Bulldog veteran rather than a newcomer."Really, I guess that makes me the most experienced person here in this offense," Stevens said. "It helps me be a coac h of some point and to be able to help those guys learn and give them examples of some of the things we did at Penn State. Mississippi State is hoping a graduate transfer quarterback can give a jolt to its struggling offense. The Bulldogs added Tommy Stevens during the offseason. The 6-foot-5 senior was the backup at Penn State behind Trace McSorley before moving to Starkvil le. The coach and QB are familiar with each other: Joe Moorhead was the offensive coordinator at Penn State before taking the Mississippi State job and coached Stevens early in his career.Moorhead said on Wednesday at SEC media days that "Tommy is a kid with a lot of physical tools. Strong arm. He can really run. He's accustomed to the system so he's going to understand it for the most part coming in." Stevens will compete with Keytaon Thompson for the starting job.
