 Anfernee Jennings, Alabama, Player News

It's almost as though the New England Patriots were supposed to pick Alabama outside linebacker Anfernee Jennings in the 2020 NFL Draft. And they did, adding the former Dadeville High School star with the 87th pick in the 85th draft. Jennings said former Alabama and NFL safety Vinnie Sunseri predicted in February he'd be drafted by the Patriots. A graduate assistant at Alabama last season, Sunseri is a member of the New England support staff now. "He was the analyst for a couple years here and someone I could really reach out to and have conversations with," Jennings said.

"He got to the job to New England earlier this year, and he told me, actually right before we started the (NFL Scouting) Combine and stuff like that, that I was going to be a Patriot. With that being said, I just went about the process and now I'm here and I'm a Patriot, so it's kind of funny." One of the leaders of the New England defense is linebacker Dont'a Hightower, a 2019 Pro Bowler who was an All-American for Alabama in 2011. "I know quite a bit about him," Jennings said. "After I was drafted, he reached out to me, and we texted for a little bit and got on the same page. Ready to get to it and follow the ropes and just work hard." - Birmingham News

The New England Patriots selected Alabama linebacker Anfernee Jennings with the No. 87 pick in the 2020 NFL draft. Jennings was the fifth Tide defender drafted Friday night, when the league held the second and third rounds of its draft. Four Alabama offensive players were taken in the first round Thursday. The selection was likely facilitated in part by the well-known relationship between Alabama coach Nick Saban and Patriots coach Bill Belichick, who also drafted former Alabama linebacker Dont'a Hightower in 2012. Jennings, one of four permanent team captains from last season's team, was a first-team All-SEC selection in 2019 by both coaches and the Associated Press. The Dadeville native spent five seasons in Tuscaloosa, playing in 54 games and finishing his career with 15.5 sacks. - Birmingham News
