Jalen Thompson, Washington State, Player News

The Cardinals have been adding to their roster in almost every way possible after a three-win season, but Wednesday they went with a mode they hadn't used since 1990 when they selected Washington State safety Jalen Thompson in the fifth round of the supplemental draft. The pick means the Cards will have to surrender a fifth-round pick in the 2020 draft. They had two fifth-rounders after getting an extra one from Miami in the Josh Rosen trade.

The last time the Cards used a pick in the supplemental draft was 1990 when they used a ninth-round pick on LSU tackle Willie Williams. In 1989, they took another Washington State product - quarterback Timm Rosenbach - in the first round of the supplemental draft. The supplemental draft is for players who, for whatever reason, were not able to enter the April draft but were not going to return to school. In Thompson's case, he was ruled ineligible for his 2019 senior season for violating NCAA rules. Reportedly, it had to do with taking an over-the-counter supplement from a nutrition store. Instead of redshirting and playing his final season in 2020, Thompson decided to go to the NFL. - azcardinals.com

Washington State safety Jalen Thompson has lost his final year of eligibility for violating an NCAA rule and will enter the NFL supplemental draft. Thompson's status was announced by the school on Saturday. No other details about the violation were released by the school. Thompson was a three-year starter at Washington State and an honorable mention all-Pac-12 selection after his junior season where he 66 tackles and two interceptions. He was expected to be the anchor of Washington State's secondary going into his senior season. - AP College Football

In a strange and sudden turn of events, Washingon State all-conference safety Jalen Thompson has lost his final year of eligibility with the Cougars and will get a jumpstart on his professional career, entering the upcoming NFL Supplemental Draft. According to NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport, Thompson, who would've been a fourth-year senior this fall, learned Friday he'd lost his final season of eligibility at WSU though reasons are still unclear.

Rapoport reported Thompson has already hired agent Brad Cicala of Terra Firma Sports Management and applied to be drafted in July. The Supplemental Draft, held during the second week of July every year, gives NFL teams a chance to chose from a small pool of college players who left their institution after April's Draft. - Bonner County Daily Bee
