College Football Player News & Notes

Utah defensive coordinator Morgan Scalley likes what new safety Clayton Isbell brings to the defense. Isbell transferred to the Utes after playing two seasons at Illinois State. His sophomore season, he collected 62 tackles and three interceptions. Now, Isbell is making an impression in fall camp. "He covers a lot of ground. He's rangy. The more he understands our scheme, the faster he's going to play. With that length, he poses some problems in man-to-man coverage against tight ends," Scalley said. "He's shown up and done a nice job. He's a guy that you can coach hard, too. Sometimes the newcomers, you coach them hard and they look at you like you've got 10 heads. But he's another coach that was coached well."

Isbell said that's one of his strengths - learning from coaches. "The coaches here love the players. You show love by the way they teach and the way they coach," he said. "Through my college experience I've learned to trust coaches and trust the process." Safeties Cole Bishop and R.J. Hubert have been helping Isbell in camp. "Anytime I have questions or when I mess up, they correct me and pick me up," Isbell said. How are the safeties faring in camp? "The safeties are looking really good. A lot of experience," Isbell said. "They may be young in academics but on the field they definitely have some time and have game experience. We're looking good." - Deseret News

After unfollowing team beat writers on Twitter three games - and three losses - into his college career and questioning fickle admirers with his "Don't be a fan later" and "Friends over fans" brands, Thompson-Robinson has shifted his focus to more important endeavors. "At this point, our concern is with NFL scouts and GMs and owners and head coaches," said Dorian's mother, Melva Thompson-Robinson. "So it's not a matter of trying to be mean or anything, but we have to be focused on a bigger prize. He and I have been talking since the early spring about, 'Dorian, you want to be a pro? It's time to step it up and walk like a pro, act like a pro, talk like a pro, throw like a pro, work like a pro.' You know, all these things. CLA quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson, right, avoids a tackle by Arizona State defensive lineman Omarr Norman-Lott.

As part of that change, Thompson-Robinson has undergone his own transformation. He welcomes criticism, embracing the ways it can help him improve, no matter how hard it might be to hear. All those losses he's endured? He's studied the details like an autopsy, trying to understand what it will take to turn a disappointing season into one that leaves a legacy. He knows he can't run backward under pressure or let the ball slip out of his hand or throw into tight coverage, all maddening tendencies of earlier seasons. There always will be critics. Brandon Walker has something to say? Thompson-Robinson is listening, ready to absorb every word in the hope it can avert more disappointment. "There's always the one or two games - whether it's the Arizona States, the 'SCs, the Utahs, the Oregons - that we let slip away that if we win those games, we're in that big game, we're in the Rose Bowl, we're in the Pac-12 championship," Thompson-Robinson said. "So for me he's right and that's going to remind me every day that on those three big games that we've got this year that I've got circled - Arizona State, 'SC and Utah - that we've got to finish, we've got to win those games so that we can play in the games that we want to." - Los Angeles Times

Devin Leary on trying to improve: "My biggest emphasis this offseason comes with the defensive identification - whether there is a certain pressure or a certain look that is bad with the specific play that we have, getting us out of those looks. That was my biggest thing this spring that Coach [Tim] Beck [the offensive coordinator] kind of took the leash off me - 'Hey, if you see something that you feel as if this play isn't going to work, just get out [of it] and check it." - Richmond Times-Dispatch

  08/16/22 - OLB Gabe ReidrSr/2023, Utah + More +

Gabe Reid has returned to the state of Utah - a place where he has longstanding family ties. And he's joined a program at the University of Utah that will allow him to chase opposing quarterbacks and a program that he is hoping to help capture another Pac-12 championship. After spending the past four seasons at Stanford as a linebacker, the 6-foot, 247-pound senior is now a defensive end at Utah. For his final season of college football, Reid joins his younger brother, Karene Reid, a linebacker, on the Ute defense. "I would say it's home. That's the first thing, just being able to come home and play with my brother," Gabe said of his transfer from Stanford to Utah. "But Utah as a program, I really love that they're defensive-minded. "They're known for playing tough, gritty defense. Rushing the passer while getting after the quarterback is something that I pride myself on. That's something I definitely want to showcase in my last year of college football." At Stanford, Reid played in 42 games with 24 starts. He tallied 167 total tackles from 2018-21. In 2021, he recorded a career-high 10 tackles against Arizona State and had his first career interception against Oregon. He was a Pac-12 All-Academic in 2018. - Deseret News

Jammie Robinson on his mentality: "I'm a senior in college now. This year I'm locked in for sure. It's all-in for sure. Gotta get the ball. That's how I'm going to get that money. That's my main thing, getting the ball, making plays, being the guy that Coach is going to call on as that playmaker. I want to be a playmaker. Just being that student of the game, knowing what coverage we're in and what the offense can run to beat that coverage. Just being smart." - Richmond Times-Dispatch

One of the biggest challenges for UNLV football coach Marcus Arroyo in the offseason was filling the void left by outgoing running back Charles Williams. Replacing the school's all-time leading rusher wouldn't be an easy task. But as the Rebels wrapped up their second week of fall camp, Louisville transfer Aidan Robbins has started to make his case as the top option at running back for the Rebels this fall. "He's learned the offense fast and we're now starting to really see where he can be dynamic," Arroyo said of Robbins. Through the first 12 practices of fall camp, Robbins has taken most of the snaps in the backfield with the first-team offense.

In the portion of practice open to the media where the team goes 11-on-11, Robbins - standing at 6-foot-3 and 230 pounds - has showcased his speed by breaking off long runs and used his size to his advantage as he battled through contact. "He's got power, speed, he can catch the ball in the backfield, and more than adequate long speed," Arroyo said. "He's a big body that's got an all-purpose, all-down type of mentality. That's been impressive." Robbins graduated from Louisville after three years, where he appeared in 11 games over three seasons. He said he entered the transfer portal because the Louisville offense wasn't the right fit for him and he was looking for the ideal situation to showcase his skills. "UNLV checked all the boxes for me," Robbins said. - Las Vegas Review Journal
