WEEK 8 BIG 12 DEFENSIVE LINE OF THE WEEK: UCF,...UCF won Big 12 Defensive Line of the Week honors for the first time this season after limiting West Virginia to 210 yards of total offensive. The unit accounted for seven of the Knights' eight sacks against the Mountaineers, which was one shy of a program record. UCF's eight sacks also tied for the second-most by an FBS team this season. - Big 12 Football

UCF quarterback Tayven Jackson returned from injury to throw two fourth-down touchdown passes to freshman receiver Chris Domercant as the Knights snapped a three-game losing streak with a 45-13 victory over West Virginia on Saturday. Jackson missed last week's game against No. 24 Cincinnati after injuring his shoulder against Kansas two weeks ago. UCF (4-3, 1-3 Big 12) was without its starter from last week. Cam Fancher, who was ruled out for this game, so the Knights turned back to Jackson. He threw for 277 yards and two touchdowns on 23-for-34 passing in the game. Domercant caught five passes for 89 yards to lead UCF's receiving group. West Virginia (2-5, 0-4) struggled to find its offense.

The Mountaineers only scored off Knights turnovers, the first on fourth down in Mountaineers territory and the other after a fourth-quarter interception was returned to the 2. Kahlil Wilkins led the Mountaineers in rushing with 48 yards on 15 carries, including a 6-yard touchdown run. Diore Hubbard scored the other touchdown. UCF outgained West Virginia 578-210. UCF opened the game up in the third quarter, starting the half with a nine-play, 92-yard drive capped off by a 12-yard run from Jaden Nixon. The Knights defense got on the board with a strip-sack forced by Nyjalik Kelly that Keli Lawson returned 32 yards for a touchdown. Nixon scored his second rushing touchdown on the next UCF possession with an 83-yard run, completing UCF's third scoring drive of 80 yards or more. Nixon finished with 116 yards on seven carries with his two touchdowns. - UCF/AP College Football

WEEK 4 BIG 12 OFFENSIVE LINE OF THE WEEK: UCF,...The UCF offensive line's play was a story of resilience in tribute to offensive line coach Shawn Clark. The unit responded by allowing zero sacks in the Knights' 34-9 win over North Carolina. UCF controlled the game with three drives of 13 plays or more, including a final march of 18 plays for 93 yards and a touchdown that took over 10 minutes off the clock. - Big 12 Football

UCF's Tayven Jackson threw for 223 yards and scored a passing and rushing touchdown to guide UCF to a 34-9 victory over North Carolina. The Knights were mostly methodical throughout the game, with three touchdown drives of longer than five minutes. But they scored a critical touchdown on a 64-second, six-play, 83-yard drive to close the second half when Jackson found Kylan Fox for an 18-yard score. After forcing a punt to open the third quarter, the Knights scored on a short run from Myles Montgomery to take a 24-point lead and coasted to the finish, getting a rushing touchdown from Jaden Nixon on the team's final drive with less than two minutes left. The Tar Heels could not respond to the Knights' long drives.

UNC quarterback Gio Lopez struggled with 11-for-14 passing and 87 yards. The Tar Heels tallied only 217 yards. The Knights had 366. UCF forced two interceptions in the first half, picking off Lopez on a deflected pass at the line by Horace Lockett that was snagged by defensive end Nyjalik Kelly. They also got a second deflected pass when Jayden Bellamy tipped a pass to Braeden Marshall to stop a deep North Carolina drive. Lopez left the game in the third quarter with an apparent right leg injury after he was tackled on a fourth-down conversion. Lopez left the field in a cart after an extended time in the medical tent. Max Johnson took over, finishing the drive with a touchdown throw to Nathan Leacock late in the third quarter. He had 67 yards on 11-for-19 passing to go with his touchdown. - UCF/AP College Football

WEEK 2 BIG 12 CO-OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Jaden Nixon, RB, UCF...With 156 rushing yards on just four carries with two touchdowns against North Carolina A&T, Nixon made UCF history throughout Saturday's game. His 87-yard touchdown run was the third longest play from scrimmage in program history after returning the opening kickoff 96 yards for a touchdown. Nixon also became just the fourth player in UCF's FBS history to return a kickoff for a touchdown and tally an offensive touchdown in the same game. - Big 12 Football

UCF's Jaden Nixon opened the game with a 92-yard touchdown return and added touchdown runs of 87 and 66 yards as UCF never looked back in a dominant 68-7 victory over North Carolina A&T. Nixon ran for 156 yards on four carries and two touchdowns. His 87-yard touchdown run was the third-longest in UCF's history. The Knights also fell five points short of setting the program record for points scored in a game.

The Knights (2-0) took that opening kickoff and kept on running, steamrolling the Aggies even when many of the team's reserves came into the game. Backup quarterback Jacurri Brown took over in the second half and rushed for 106 yards on five carries, including a 60-yard touchdown run. The Knights' defense stepped up, too, recording two sacks and forcing three turnovers. That included a strip sack by defensive lineman Nyjalik Kelly that was recovered in the endzone by Rodney Lora. UCF outgained North Carolina A&T 560-200 in the game. Shimique Blizzard got the Aggies on the board with a 17-yard touchdown run with three minutes to play. - UCF/AP College Football

UCF quarterback Tayven Jackson found DJ Black for a 33-yard touchdown pass with 1:03 remaining to give the Knights a 17-10 win over Jacksonville State in the teams' season opener. To secure the win, the Knights needed a big defensive stand, stopping the Gamecocks on a 4th and 1 at the UCF 36-yard line with four minutes to play. Both UCF and Jacksonville State featured new coaching staffs and new players with the Knights adding nearly 70 players through recruiting and the transfer portal and the Gamecocks adding more than 50. The lack of rhythm for both teams was apparent as they struggled to get much going on offense. The teams did not score until they traded field goals in the third quarter.

Jacksonville State seemed to have the upper hand, breaking a deadlocked defensive battle with a 10-yard touchdown by Andrew Paul early in the fourth quarter for the first touchdown of the game. UCF answered the score with a seven-play drive capped off with a 39-yard touchdown catch-and-run from Jackson to Dylan Wade to tie the game at 10 apiece. Jackson played the majority of the game at quarterback for UCF and threw for 282 yards on 17-for-24 passing. Black had three catches for 59 yards and Wade added four catches for 54 to go along with their touchdowns. Running back Myles Montgomery tallied 79 yards on 21 carries and caught three passes for 71 yards, including a 64-yard pass that set up UCF's field goal. Gamecocks quarterback Gavin Wimsatt completed only 15 of 29 passes for 139 yards. Cam Cook led the ground attack with 75 yards on 17 carries. - UCF/AP College Football

UCF entered the season with one of the best running back rooms in the nation and they put all of it on display, rushing for 454 total yards to lead the Knights to a 57-3 rout over New Hampshire on Thursday night in a season opener. Senior captain RJ Harvey led the Knights' backfield, rushing for 111 of his 142 yards in the first half and scoring two touchdowns for UCF. UCF is the only team with two 1,000-yard rushers on the roster from last year. Harvey is one of those and set himself up to eclipse that mark again with his strong debut. The other is Toledo transfer Peny Boone who had 81 yards on seven carries, including a 59-yard touchdown run in the third quarter.

Myles Montgomery (77 yards on eight carries and a touchdown) along with quarterback KJ Jefferson (39 yards on 11 carries with a rushing touchdown) further boosted the run game as the Knights rushed for 300 yards for the first time since last year's season opener against Kent State. The team went for 389 yards in that game. Jefferson ended the game with 164 yards on 7-for-14 passing and two touchdowns, finding Montgomery and Johnny Richardson on short throws that they took for 38 and 22 yards in the third quarter. - AP College Football

Arkansas has set key dates for its spring football practice. The Razorbacks are scheduled to begin the practice season March 9 and have scheduled their spring game for April 15 at Reynolds Razorback Stadium. The spring game is scheduled to begin at noon, but TV and streaming details have yet to be announced. The spring game was scheduled to coincide with a home softball game against Alabama-Birmingham and a home baseball game against Tennessee later that day.

Festivities will begin that morning with live music and food trucks as part of HogTown north of the stadium. Admission to the spring game and HogTown will be free. Arkansas coach Sam Pittman said last week the team will practice five times prior to the university's spring break, which is scheduled for March 20-24, then complete the 15-practice season after classes resume March 27. - Northwest Arkansas Times

After UCF football lost on the road 34-13 at East Carolina this past season, Pirates defensive back Jireh Wilson was named AAC defensive player of the week. Wilson recorded an interception, recovered a fumble and totaled 3 tackles against the Knights. Now, he's joining forces with them as UCF heads to the Big 12 Conference this summer. "When I entered the portal, I wasn't really sure what I was going to get," Wilson said. "I didn't really have any expected destinations. I was open to all opportunities." That included joining a familiar foe in the Knights, a move that Wilson admitted was strange at first.

"I played here twice as an opponent," he said. "Being in the facility and meeting the coaches that I just played against a few months ago was definitely a little weird." Wilson entered the NCAA transfer portal on Dec. 29 and less than two weeks later committed to UCF. "I wanted the chance to play on a bigger stage than the American Conference," he said. "I wanted to be somewhere I could call home, develop a good relationship with the coaches, play in an area where the team has a lot of support like Orlando, a chance to play at the next level and a winning history. "Everything that UCF has is what I was looking for when I entered the portal." - Orlando Sentinel

Memphis football added a boost to its receiver room after Marshall receiver Corey Gammage committed to the Tigers on Monday. Gammage, who is 6-foot-4 and 220 pounds, led Marshall in receiving for the past three seasons and was an All-Sun Belt honorable mention selection the last two seasons. As a junior, he had 52 catches for 774 yards and six touchdowns after recording 78 catches for 878 yards and two touchdowns in 2021.

Gammage made his announcement on Twitter and originally hails from Delray Beach, Florida. He has one season of eligibility remaining and is the Tigers' third commitment within the last 24 hours. In his career, he's caught 178 passes for 2,239 yards and 13 touchdowns. Gammage also reunites with Memphis offensive coordinator Tim Cramsey. Cramsey served in the same capacity at Marshall from 2018-21, which coincided with Gammage's first four seasons. Memphis needs more speed and size with its receivers and Gammage could help fill that void. - Memphis Commercial Appeal

Indiana quarterback Tayven Jackson smiled on camera when someone asked him during a Zoom call about handling the fast pace of Indiana's no-huddle offense. Transferring in from Tennessee, the program currently defining the tempo genre, Jackson is well-acquainted with playing football at a breakneck pace. The Volunteers' combination of speed and explosiveness made them perhaps the best all-around offense in college football last season, the practice of which Jackson now brings to Bloomington. "I don't think it's going to be faster than that," he said, "but I know (IU offensive coordinator Walt) Bell is an offensive genius. He's going to do everything he can to put our quarterbacks in the right positions to make plays."

Still, it's not what's on the field that Jackson draws from most, as he transfers what he learned in Knoxville with him to Bloomington. 'This was home.'Why QB Tayven Jackson is transferring to IU football During his one season at Tennessee, Jackson worked under Josh Heupel and Alex Golesh. More importantly, he worked alongside quarterbacks Hendon Hooker and Joe Milton. Players, Jackson said, with NFL skills and NFL talent, but also NFL minds. - Indianapolis Star News

One storyline worth following in Tennessee's football offseason was expected to be where Tayven Jackson would fit in at quarterback with Joe Milton III returning and with the fanfare of five-star early enrollee Nico Iamaleava. That answer came quickly. The 6-foot-3, 200-pounder from Greenwood, Indiana, has entered the NCAA transfer portal and will not battle it out with Milton and Iamaleava in the months ahead under the guidance of coach Josh Heupel and new offensive coordinator Joey Halzle, who is entering his third season as quarterbacks coach of the Volunteers. Milton and Iamaleava are currently Tennessee's only quarterbacks on scholarship. - Chattanooga Times Free Press
