  10/26/25 - Bear BachmeierFr/2029, Brigham Young, 6-1, 220 (DS#5 QB) + More +

The Big 12 has five teams in the Top 25 for the first time this season, Vanderbilt earned its highest ranking in 88 years and LSU dropped out of The Associated Press college football poll Sunday following its third loss in four games. The top six was unchanged, with Ohio State holding the No. 1 spot for a ninth straight week followed by Indiana, Texas A&M, Alabama, Georgia and Oregon. The idle Buckeyes received 53 first-place votes and the Hoosiers got 11, six more than last week. Texas A&M was No. 1 on one ballot. No. 7 Mississippi and No. 8 Georgia Tech swapped spots, as did No. 9 Vanderbilt and Miami, which is tied at No. 10 with BYU. The Big 12's five ranked teams are BYU, No. 13 Texas Tech, No. 17 Cincinnati, No. 22 Houston and No. 24 Utah. The Big 12 last had five Top 25 teams in the Sept. 22, 2024, poll.

Houston, which knocked off then-No. 24 Arizona State 24-16 for its first road win against a ranked opponent since 2017, is in the Top 25 for the first time since the first two polls in 2022. Vanderbilt's 17-10 win over then-No. 15 Missouri gave the Commodores a 7-1 start for the first time since 1941 and, at No. 9, its highest ranking since it was No. 7 for one week in 1937. Vandy has a program-record three regular-season wins over Top 25 opponents. LSU was ranked as high as No. 3 for three weeks in September and in the top 10 for the first five polls. Road losses to Mississippi and Vanderbilt and this weekened's 24-point home loss against Texas A&M put the Tigers on the outside looking in. It's the second straight year the Tigers have taken a fast fall. They were No. 8 a year ago and dropped out after three straight losses. - AP College Football

BYU safety Faletau Satuala returned an interception for a touchdown to help 11th-ranked BYU pull away in the fourth quarter, and the Cougars stayed unbeaten with a 41-27 win over Iowa State on Saturday. Bear Bachmeier threw for 307 yards and two touchdowns and ran for another, and Chase Roberts and Parker Kingston each had over 100 yards receiving for BYU. Iowa State's Rocco Becht threw three interceptions, the last one coming with 1:14 left and allowing BYU to run out the clock. BYU (8-0, 5-0 Big 12) drove 79 yards in the third quarter to take its first lead, converting two fourth downs before Bachmeier dashed 9 yards up the middle for a touchdown.

After Iowa State (5-3, 2-3) tied it 27-all, BYU looked as if it would go three and out on its ensuing possession. As the Cougars were preparing to down the punt, the ball touched Iowa State's Eli Green and BYU recovered. Three plays later Bachmeier, under pressure, threw a 27-yard touchdown pass to Kingston. It was 41-27 less than a minute later when safety Satuala, who made a game-high 10 tackles, pulled a short pass away from Gabe Burkle and ran it back 40 yards for a touchdown. Bachmeier led the Cougars in rushing with 12 carries for 49 yards. Kingston had seven catches for 133 yards and two touchdowns, all career highs, and Roberts caught eight balls for 128 yards. Carson Hansen ran 16 times for 152 yards and two TDs for the Cyclones. - BYU/AP College Football

Bear Bachmeier had 229 yards of offense while throwing for a touchdown and running for another score to rally No. 15 BYU to a 24-21 victory over No. 23 Utah on Saturday night. LJ Martin added 122 yards on the ground to help the Cougars (7-0, 4-0 Big 12) remain unbeaten and beat their Holy War rivals for a third straight time. BYU has won three straight in the rivalry series for the first time since winning four straight from 1989 to 1992. "I've been a part of all three of those wins," senior safety Tanner Wall said. "To be able to say, leaving this place, I never lost to Utah, I'll wear that with a lot of pride for the rest of my life." Devon Dampier threw for 244 yards and two touchdowns for Utah (5-2, 2-2). Daniel Bray added a career-high 121 yards and a touchdown on 10 carries. The Utes surrendered 14 straight points after taking their first lead less than a minute into the fourth quarter. "Did some really good things tonight," Utah coach Kyle Whittingham said. "Outrushed them, outthrew them, out first downed them, but we didn't score more points than they did."

Utah went up 14-10 when Bray cut to the sideline and raced 49 yards untouched. BYU charged back in front on its ensuing drive, going up 17-14 when Parker raced in from 12 yards out on a jet sweep. Dampier threw an interception to Wall on Utah's ensuing drive. Bachmeier turned the turnover into points when he dragged three would-be tacklers into the end zone at the end of a 22-yard run, giving the Cougars a 24-14 lead with 4:22 left. "We're not happy," Dampier said. "We know what our team is capable of. We had aspirations to be undefeated after our first loss, so it hurts us right now." BYU scratched out a 10-7 halftime lead after the Utes turned it over on downs twice and muffed a punt. "We knew it would take all three phases to do this, and we knew it would be a fight to the end," BYU coach Kalani Sitake said. - BYU/AP College Football

Freshman quarterback Bear Bachmeier ran for a 7-yard touchdown in the second overtime, BYU's defense stopped Arizona on the ensuing drive and the 18th-ranked Cougars stayed undefeated with a 33-27 win over the Wildcats on Saturday night. Bachmeier's run up the middle gave BYU a 33-27 lead, but the 2-point conversion attempt was deflected and fell incomplete. Arizona had a chance to tie the game, but Noah Fifita's fourth-down pass bounced off the hands of Javin Whatley, who was trying to make a tough catch in the end zone. "There's no better feeling than winning, especially winning in double overtime on the road against a really good team," BYU receiver Parker Kingston said. "It was awesome." BYU (6-0, 3-0 Big 12) has won its first six games for a second straight season and seventh time in program history.

Arizona (4-2, 1-2) has dropped two of its past three games. BYU fought back from a 10-point deficit in the fourth quarter, tying the game at 24 with 19 seconds left in regulation when Bachmeier ran for a 2-yard touchdown. Kedrick Reescano gave Arizona a 24-14 lead with 11:14 left in the game after a powerful 36-yard touchdown run that went right through the middle of the BYU defense. The 214-pound back met resistance at the line of scrimmage, but broke through a few tackles and dashed toward the end zone. BYU's LJ Martin ran for a career-high 162 yards and a score. Linebacker Siale Esera finished with a team-high 16 tackles. Bachmeier threw for 172 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions while also running for 89 yards and two touchdowns on 22 carries. - BYU/AP College Football

BYU's Evan Johnson had a goal-line interception followed by a short pick-6 on East Carolina's next throw to help the Cougars beat the Pirates 34-13 on Saturday night. Johnson's takeaways highlighted the win for BYU (3-0), which had allowed just three points through wins against Portland State and Stanford. The defense twice kept the Pirates (2-2) out of the end zone on drives that breached BYU's 10-yard line. Johnson cut in front of a bad-decision throw by Katin Houser for a TD-preventing pick that ended one second-quarter drive, while BYU held ECU to a third-quarter field goal after taking a 20-3 lead.

Johnson's score stood out, coming after ECU muffed a punt return to start from its own 1 with 59 seconds before halftime. On the next snap, Houser threw left toward Anthony Smith, only to see Johnson pounce on the route for an easy score. BYU's Bear Bachmeier accounted for two touchdowns, hitting Carsen Ryan for a 20-yarder in the third and scoring on a 16-yard keeper in the fourth. LJ Martin broke free for a 41-yard TD with 3:44 left as a punctuating score. BYU surrendered its first touchdown this year on Houser's 2-yard run midway through the fourth, though the Cougars led 27-6 by that point. - BYU/AP College Football
