Freshman quarterback Bear Bachmeier ran for a 7-yard touchdown in the second overtime, BYU's defense stopped Arizona on the ensuing drive and the 18th-ranked Cougars stayed undefeated with a 33-27 win over the Wildcats on Saturday night. Bachmeier's run up the middle gave BYU a 33-27 lead, but the 2-point conversion attempt was deflected and fell incomplete. Arizona had a chance to tie the game, but Noah Fifita's fourth-down pass bounced off the hands of Javin Whatley, who was trying to make a tough catch in the end zone. "There's no better feeling than winning, especially winning in double overtime on the road against a really good team," BYU receiver Parker Kingston said. "It was awesome." BYU (6-0, 3-0 Big 12) has won its first six games for a second straight season and seventh time in program history.

Arizona (4-2, 1-2) has dropped two of its past three games. BYU fought back from a 10-point deficit in the fourth quarter, tying the game at 24 with 19 seconds left in regulation when Bachmeier ran for a 2-yard touchdown. Kedrick Reescano gave Arizona a 24-14 lead with 11:14 left in the game after a powerful 36-yard touchdown run that went right through the middle of the BYU defense. The 214-pound back met resistance at the line of scrimmage, but broke through a few tackles and dashed toward the end zone. BYU's LJ Martin ran for a career-high 162 yards and a score. Bear Bachmeier threw for a career-high 351 yards and a touchdown to lead No. 23 BYU to a 38-24 victory over West Virginia on Friday night. BYU (5-0, 2-0 Big 12) rolled up 517 total yards and had two takeaways. Chase Roberts had a career-high 161 yards on four catches, and Parker Kingston added a career-high 111 yards and a touchdown on four receptions. Khalil Wilkins totaled 170 yards on offense and had two interceptions in his first career start. West Virginia (2-4, 0-3) forced three turnovers but also got burned repeatedly by big plays from BYU.Kingston scored on back-to-back first-quarter drives to put BYU up 14-0. Therrian Alexander III jumped a route near midfield and returned an interception 49 yards to set up Kingston's first TD on a 1-yard run. Kingston followed up by reeling in a short pass, weaving through traffic, and sprinting 54 yards for his second touchdown. Roberts raced downfield on an 85-yard catch-and-run late in the second quarter, setting up L.J. Martin's 4-yard TD run that extended BYU's lead to 21-3. BYU's Evan Johnson had a goal-line interception followed by a short pick-6 on East Carolina's next throw to help the Cougars beat the Pirates 34-13 on Saturday night. Johnson's takeaways highlighted the win for BYU (3-0), which had allowed just three points through wins against Portland State and Stanford. The defense twice kept the Pirates (2-2) out of the end zone on drives that breached BYU's 10-yard line. Johnson cut in front of a bad-decision throw by Katin Houser for a TD-preventing pick that ended one second-quarter drive, while BYU held ECU to a third-quarter field goal after taking a 20-3 lead.

Bear Bachmeier threw for 175 yards and ran for a touchdown to lead BYU to a 27-3 victory over Stanford on Saturday night. LJ Martin added 110 yards on the ground for the Cougars while averaging 6.1 yards per carry. It was Martin's second straight 100-yard game and the fourth of his career. "He gets stronger as the game goes on," BYU coach Kalani Sitake said. "We just got to keep feeding him the ball." Chase Roberts added 84 yards on five catches. BYU (2-0) tallied three sacks, seven tackles for loss, and forced three turnovers.

Ben Gulbranson threw for 142 yards and had two interceptions for Stanford, which totaled 161 yards on offense. The Cardinal (0-2) mustered 12 first downs and went 2-of-13 on third down. "They did a good job in the run game," Stanford interim coach Frank Reich said. "We got to be better there. If we're going to be a successful team and for us to win games, we have to have a balanced offense. We'll make the improvements there." Bear Bachmeier threw for three touchdowns and ran for two more to lead BYU to a 69-0 victory over Portland State in his collegiate debut on Saturday night. Bachmeier, a Stanford transfer, became the first true freshman to start at quarterback in a season opener for the Cougars. He totaled 129 yards on offense and completed 64% of his passes in one half of play. BYU (1-0) churned out 468 yards and five touchdowns on the ground. The Cougars averaged 9.8 yards per carry and 14 different players had at least one rush. LJ Martin led the way with 131 yards on eight carries. Portland State (0-2) has been outscored 111-0 in eight quarters this season. The Vikings mustered minus-nine total yards over the second and third quarters. CJ Jordan led Portland State with 58 yards on 8-of-14 passing.

The Cougars scored touchdowns on all five of their second-quarter drives to stake out a 49-0 lead. Bachmeier threw a pair of touchdown passes and ran for two more scores during that stretch. Cody Hagen also scored on a 57-yard reverse – his first career carry. BYU racked up 267 yards and three touchdowns on just 19 carries by halftime. On the other side, the Cougars' defense held Portland State to minus-two yards rushing on 19 carries in the first half. Jack Kelly returned a blocked field goal 54 yards to put BYU on the board with 3:58 left in the first. Kelly's touchdown helped the Cougars overcome a special teams gaffe a few plays earlier when Parker Kingston fumbled at the end of a 15-yard punt return. BYU extended the lead to 14-0 on the final play of the quarter when Bachmeier tossed a 4-yard pass to Chase Roberts for his first career passing touchdown. Kedon Slovis was late to church, which was the one thing he had hoped to avoid. The new BYU quarterback was nervous about attending the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saint services in the first place, but he had been invited to listen to his teammate, Chase Roberts, give a lesson on Christ and hardship. Wearing a black tie and a tan sweater, tailor-made for blending in, Slovis planned to slink into a back seat, support his wide receiver, and leave without making a scene. A few years ago, when he was one of college football's rising stars, Slovis had said he'd found Provo to be a "weird" place, likening it to the artificial bubble of "The Truman Show." Now, on this Sunday, Slovis simply hoped to blend into the cast.

But when he and tight end Carter Wheat entered the room, every head in the congregation's elders quorum immediately turned back and locked eyes with the newcomer. "My family is not super religious, so I didn't grow up going to church," Slovis said, explaining his hesitancy. "But I definitely feel like the BYU quarterback now. Everyone in church knew who I was and I'd never been there before."
