  Draft Scout by Conference

Kentucky football's options at quarterback are increasing after a week-one loss to Auburn. Auburn transfer Joey Gatewood has been cleared to play the rest of the season by the Southeastern Conference, UK coach Mark Stoops announced on Wednesday. The SEC approved Gatewood's waiver request and others for players transferring from one league school to another due to "current circumstances resulting from disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic." Stoops had previously indicated Gatewood had been approved for a NCAA waiver to play this season instead of sitting out the normal year required of FBS transfers, but the SEC also had to approve a waiver for him to play since he was transferring from one conference program to another.

Gatewood, a former top-50 recruit in the 2018 high school class, could push Wilson for the starting job if additional snaps are not enough for Wilson to fix the mistakes of the opener. For now, he will compete with freshman Beau Allen for the primary backup position. Stoops said after Thursday's practice that Allen had taken the majority of the second-team quarterback reps the last two weeks, but Gatewood had been used extensively in preseason practice. He declined to speculate on how the backup quarterback spot might be used moving forward. The No. 1-ranked athlete in the 2018 high school class according to the 247Sports Composite, Gatewood lost the Auburn starting job to freshman Bo Nix, the No. 1-ranked quarterback in the 2019 class and son of Auburn legend Patrick Nix, last fall. - Louisville Courier Journal
