Fred Payton threw four touchdown passes, CJ Miller had 105 yards rushing and Mercer rolled to a 55-14 victory over VMI on Saturday. Payton finished 17-of-24 passing with a pair of scoring throws in each half. Miller had just 12 carries that included a 4- yard touchdown run. Brandon Marshall added 77 yards rushing with a 2-yard TD run. Devron Harper opened the scoring for the Bears with an 87-yard punt return for a touchdown with about five minutes left in the first quarter. Mercer (7-2, 5-1) which entere d with the top offense in the Southern Conference, put up 540 yards of offense against VMI (1-7, 0-5), which is last in the conference in scoring defense. Fred Payton threw five touchdown passes and Mercer rolled up 577 yards on offense in a 55-33 victory over East Tennessee State on Saturday. Payton threw four TD passes in the first half as the Bears built a 28-10 lead in the second quarter on the way to a 28-20 halftime lead. ETSU closed to within five points twice in the second half, only to be thwarted each time. With Mercer leading 28-23 midway through the third quarter, Devron Harper scored on a 48-yard run for the Bears. Early in the fourth, Mercer led 38-33 before Payton threw his fifth TD pass - 31 yards to Ty James - for a 45-33 lead. After a Mercer field goal, Mike Campbell's 41-yard interception return for a touchdown capped the scoring for the No. 12 FCS Bears (6-1, 4-0 Southern Conference). Payton completed 23 of 35 passes for 383 yards with the five touchdowns and one interception. James had seven receptions for 120 yards with two touchdowns. Drake Starks scored on both of his receptions totaling 25 yards and Brandon Marshall caught three passes for 110 yards. Tyler Riddell was 20-of-35 passing for 206 yards with one touchdown for ETSU (3-4, 1-4). The Buccaneers were 4-of-18 converting third down but perfect in five tries on fourth down. Fred Payton threw three touchdowns passes and Mercer held the Southern Conference's top-scoring team to a pair of field goals in the Bears' 49-6 win over Western Carolina on Saturday. The Catamounts (3-3, 1-2) came in as the nation's second-best producin g offense at 549.8 yards per game but Mercer, with the conference's best defense and 11th in the country, outgained Western Carolina 520-249. Payton was 16-of-22 passing for 247 yards and ran for 48 more. Payton has 16 TD passes without an interception t his season. Devron Harper made six catches for 94 yards and a score. Two Catamount quarterbacks combined for 175 yards passing with four interceptions, two made by the Bears' Isaac Dowling, while Western Carolina was held to 74 yards on 31 carries. Fred Payton threw three touchdown passes and Mercer rolled to a 45-14 victory over Gardner-Webb on Saturday night. Payton was 15-of-23 passing for 187 yards. He threw a pair of touchdown passes to Devron Harper and one to Drake Starks. Harper made eight catches for 109 yards and added 64 yards on the ground. Harper broke loose on a 66-yard touchdown run on the game's first play from scrimmage. Payton added a 27-yard TD pass to Harper and a 15-yarder to Starks as Mercer (3-1) built a 21-0 first-quarter l ead. Cameron Sims' 67-yard pick-6 stretched the Bears' lead to 28-7 heading into halftime. Bailey Fisher threw a 21-yard touchdown pass to T.J. Fred Payton and Ty James connected for two touchdowns, and Mercer beat The Citadel 17-0 on Saturday night. Payton threw a 9-yard touchdown pass to James early in the third quarter and a 63-yarder eight minutes later in the Southern Conference opener for Mercer (2-1, 1-0). Payton was 16-of-24 passing for 224 yards. James finished with seven catches for 138 yards receiving. Austin Douglas added 81 yards on the ground on 11 carries. Austin Douglas ran for 140 yards, including two long touchdowns, Fred Payton threw four touchdown passes and Mercer routed Morehead State 63-13 in a season-opener on Saturday night. Mercer dominated the first half with 17 first downs, 486 total yards and a 42-10 lead. Among the Bears' 267 yards rushing were 128 by Douglas who had touchdown runs of 65 and 56 yards. Payton was 10-of-15 passing for 219 yards with three touchdown passes to Ty James, who caught five passes for 192 yards. Payton and James hoo ked up for a 90-yard TD pass in the final minute of the half. Mercer finished with 625 total yards, including 359 on the ground. Payton was 11-of-17 passing for 248 yards. Mercer's Devron Harper scored on a 93-yard kickoff return in the fourth quarter. T he Eagles' only touchdown came on a 10-yard pass from Grady Cramer to Kyle Daly in the second quarter. Fred Payton connected with Drake Starks for Mercer's only touchdown and the Bears' defense made it stand up in a 10-6 victory over Chattanooga on Saturday. Payton threw 4 yards to Starks for a touchdown late in the second quarter for a 7-6 Mercer lead an d Devin Folser added a 38-yard field goal late in the fourth as Mercer (7-2, 6-1 Southern Conference) remained tied for first place with East Tennessee State. Chattanooga (6-4, 5-2) fell out of the first place tie, managing one touchdown - Ailym Ford's 1 0-yard run - and blowing several scoring opportunities. Aaron Sears missed the PAT after Ford's touchdown and also missed field goal tries of 41 and 22 yards. The Mocs' Ty Boeck returned an interception 85 yards to give Chattanooga the ball at Mercer's 1 0-yard line but the Bears held on defense and Sears missed the 22-yard try late in the third quarter. Fred Payton passed for 357 yards, Mercer added another 210 yards on the ground, and the Bears defeated Wofford 45-14 on Saturday night. Payton completed 19 of 27 passes with two of his three TDs going to Ty James, who had 153 yards on five receptions. Fr ed Davis led on the ground with 91 yards and Al Wooten II added 79 yards for the Bears (5-2, 3-1 Southern Conference), who totaled 567 yards.Wofford (1-6, 0-4) managed just 176 yards of total offense, with Bryce Corriston completing 8 of 17 passes for 58 yards. Still, the score was tied at 14 in the second quarter after the Terriers' Joe Beckett returned a fumble 55 yards for a touchdown. Payton threw a 35-yard touchdown to Ty James to complete a nine-play, 75-yard drive that put Mercer (2-1, 1-0) ahead 7-3. Backup quarterback Fred Payton three three touchdown passes and No. 25 Coastal Carolina won its first game as a ranked team with a 28-14 victory over Georgia Southern on Saturday. The Chanticleers (5-0, 3-0 Sun Belt Conference) played without starting pa sser Grayson McCall, who had an upper body injury. But Payton threw of a 24-yard TD pass to running back C.J. Marable with 8:53 remaining to break a 14-all tie and Coastal Carolina up for good. Reese White added a 20-yard scoring run to extend the Chants ' margin - and likely guarantee another week in the Top 25. Payton, who started 10 games over the past two seasons, finished 15 of 28 for 252 yards. Coastal outgained Georgia Southern 382-218 and held the Eagles to 2-of-12 on third down with two intercep tions by cornerback D'Jordan Strong, six tackles for loss and four sacks, including two by linebacker Enock Makonzo. A turnover on downs by Georgia Southern and late interception by Strong sealed the win.
