Jayden Daniels, Arizona State, Player News

Jayden Daniels accounted for three touchdowns, Jack Jones returned an interception 87 yards for a touchdown and Arizona State beat rival 38-15 on Saturday. The Sun Devils (8-4, 6-3 Pac-12) won in a blowout a year ago, but needed a big second half in the rematch to pull away. Daniels threw for two touchdowns and ran for a 48-yard score, sending Arizona State to its fifth straight win in the series. The question entering the game was whether a win would be enough to save coach Herm Edwards' job. Arizona State athletic director Ray Anderson confirmed after the game that Edwards would continue to be the coach.

Arizona (1-11, 1-8) wanted a bit of revenge after losing 70-7 at home to Arizona State last season. The Wildcats moved the ball well in the first half and Will Plummer had a career day, throwing for 346 yards and a touchdown. Arizona lost its payback bid by struggling in the red zone and with too many costly mistakes. It started off well, with Plummer picking apart Arizona State's defense throughout the first half. The Wildcats are the worst team at converting red-zone opportunities into touchdowns and were at it again: three deep first-half drives, three field goals. Plummer also was stripped on a sack that Arizona State's Tyler Johnson recovered at Arizona's 1. Rachaad White ran it in the next play to give Arizona State a 14-9 halftime lead. Arizona State's offense, which sputtered most of the first half, revved up quickly with Daniels' scrambling, 48-yard TD run on the fourth play of the third quarter. He then hit Pearsall on a second 14-yard TD, this time a back-shoulder throw. - Arizona State/AP College Football

Arizona State's 28-10 win over Stanford marked the Sun Devils' fifth straight win by double digits in a Pac-12 game. The last ASU team with that type of streak was the one Jake Plummer led to the Rose Bowl after the 1996 season. With wins by margins of 63, 13, 22, 19 and 18, ASU is outscoring Pac-12 opponents by an average of 27 points dating to the 70-7 win over Arizona last season. - AP College Football

Jayden Daniels passed for 286 yards and threw two touchdown passes to Ricky Pearsall, and Arizona State used big plays to defeat No. 20 UCLA 42-23 Saturday night. The Sun Devils (4-1, 2-0 Pac-12) were forced to punt on their first drive before scoring on their next five to take control of the game and likely the Pac-12's South Division. The Bruins fall to 3-2, 1-1. Rachaad White rushed for two TDs, including a 49-yard score early in the third quarter to extend Arizona State's lead to 32-23.

The Sun Devils led by one at halftime before the senior spun out of an attempted tackle by Qwuantrezz Knight, changed direction and then went up the left sideline before avoiding a diving Alex Johnson at the 5 and then lunging over the pylon. The Sun Devils were then successful on the 2-point conversion on DeaMonte Trayanum's run. Daniels completed 13 of 18 passes, with four going for 47 or more yards. Two of them were touchdowns to Pearsall in the second quarter - a 65-yard yard screen that tied it at 14 followed by a 54-yard reception where the junior beat Elisha Guidry in coverage to give Arizona State a 24-20 lead. Pearsall finished with 132 yards on four catches. - Arizona State/AP College Football

Arizona State quarterback Jayden Daniels exited Thursday's game against Southern Utah with what the broadcast confirmed as cramps. The Sun Devils led 34-7 with 4:51 remaining in the third quarter when Jayden Daniels fell to the ground. Daniels was 10-of-12 for 132 yards passing before exiting the game. He also added six carries for 40 yards on the ground. He returned to the sideline and appeared to be ok with his helmet on his head but did not return in the game as the Sun Devils held a 27-point lead when he went to the locker room. Daniels was replaced by backup quarterback and redshirt sophomore Trenton Bourguet. Bourguet has attempted two passes in his career prior to Thursday's game, completing one for 24 yards. Bourguet finished by completing 3 of 5 passes for 32 yards. - ArizonaSports.com

Arizona State's defense created turnovers, the offense churned out touchdowns on the ground. Everything else? Still needs some work. Darien Butler had two interceptions and No. 25 Arizona State used its punishing run game to overcome some sloppy moments in a season-opening 41-14 win over Southern Utah on Thursday night. "That's bad football. Bad. I'm a bad coach," Arizona State coach Herm Edwards said. "That's bad football and we've got to fix that. If we're going to win games, games we want to try to win, you can't do that."

The Sun Devils were a bit rusty to start a season of high expectations, committing numerous miscues on special teams and 13 penalties for 135 yards. Arizona State still proved to be too much for the FCS Thunderbirds (0-2), forcing four turnovers and running for six touchdowns to win its 22nd straight home opener. Rachaad White and DeaMonte Trayanum each ran for two scores. "I told them we've got to clean this up," said Arizona State quarterback Jayden Daniels, who threw for 132 yards before leaving in the third quarter with leg cramps. "We're a better team than Southern Utah, but at the end of the day if we play Washington or USC, those things can hurt us." - AP College Football/Utah Football

After playing just four games last season, Arizona State quarterback Jayden Daniels is chomping at the bit to show how much improvement he has made. Daniels has high expectations after being placed on the preseason watch lists for several awards, including the Maxwell Award for most outstanding player. He will have to prove he belongs on those lists after playing in limited action a year ago. "Improving body-wise, physically, mentally, taking my game to another level. I feel like I took that big step from last year to this year and today I felt like it showed," Daniels said after the team's first practice.

There is also the complication of mastering the nuances implemented by second-year offensive coordinator Zak Hill. "I mean, you can see just the growth from last year to this year in the offense. It's a little more comfortable to be able to go out there and check the plays and do other things," Daniels said. "It just came through building that relationship with Coach Hill over the spring." Daniels said he and Hill talk daily. "We talk to each other about what I can do better," Daniels said. "He's going to call plays but at the end of the day, it's up to me to make the plays right." - ArizonaSports.com

Make that three watch lists for Arizona State football standout Jayden Daniels. This time it is the 2021 Walter Camp Player of the Year honor for which Daniels has earned a spot on the so called "watch list." The list includes 35 players up for the award which goes annually to the country's top player. It is the nation's fourth-oldest individual college football accolade. There are 25 offensive players (13 quarterbacks, eight running backs and four receivers/tight ends) on the preseason watch list along with 10 from the defensive side of the ball.

In all, 29 schools and 11 conferences (including independents) are represented on the list with Iowa State having four players on the list. Defending national champion Alabama has two players on the watch list, along with Notre Dame and Clemson. Considered one of the premiere quarterbacks in the nation heading into the 2021 season. Daniels, a native of San Bernardino, California, has already been named to the Maxwell and Davey O'Brien lists. - Arizona Republic

Many college athletes have been busy since the name, image and likeness (NIL) ruling went into effect on July 1, including Arizona State quarterback Jayden Daniels. Daniels signed his second NIL deal with Venezia's Pizzeria on Tuesday as he continues to spread his brand. The deal includes his very own pizza. "The JD5" comes with pepperoni, sausage, bacon, mushrooms and extra cheese, and customers can get an extra large of the specialty pizza for $24.99. The NIL rule allows college athletes to profit off of their brand. Sports360AZ's Brad Cesmat reported that Daniels get a percentage of each pizza sold.

"It's still crazy to think that my name is on a pizza, and I have my own pizza," Daniels said during the Pac-12's media day on Tuesday. "If you're in Tempe, stop by, support, and show love to the pizza." This partnership comes just nine days after signing his first NIL deal with The Solution, an IV nutrition and hydration clinic in California. A player of Daniels' caliber will surely have more opportunities to profit off his name, image and likeness, but he said he won't let them distract him from his first priority - leading the Sun Devils to their first Rose Bowl since 1996. - ArizonaSports.com

Quarterback Jayden Daniels and the Arizona State Sun Devils figure to rebound from a tumultuous 2020 season that had more to do with extreme circumstances of a pandemic than any individual players' performances. He leads an ASU squad that is expected to be in the heart of the Pac-12 South mix thanks to a defense with almost all of its starters returning and an offense that has proven talent at every position group save for receiver. Even compared to the college football world at large, few teams can line up with the experience of Arizona State's roster. With that, expect Daniels, defensive tackle Jermayne Lole, center Dohnovan West, fifth-year cornerback Chase Lucas and others to pop up on more than a few of college football's many preseason award watch lists for 2021. - Arizona Sports.com

With 20 starters returning, there are lofty expectations in the Arizona State football program this season. So not surprisingly, junior quarterback Jayden Daniels and senior corner Chase Lucas have been named to preseason awards watch lists at their respective positions. Daniels has made the Maxwell Award Watch List for the third time. The returning captain has been the starter since his first game as a freshman and has come up big with games on the line. He is credited with 877 passing yards in the fourth quarter of games in his career, 14th among Power Five quarterbacks since 2019. - Arizona Republic

BetMGM lists Rattler second in its odds at +300, with Slovis fourth at +800. Daniels is not listed by that sportsbook as a possibility to go No. 1 overall. - Arizona Republic

ASU football quarterback Jayden Daniels could have a say in the Heisman Trophy discussion in 2021, according to odds released this week by SportsBetting.ag. The SportsBook has the Arizona State sophomore at +1400 to win the award for college football's best player next season, tied for eighth in the country. Oklahoma quarterback Spencer Rattler, an Arizona high school product, is the favorite at +500. Daniels completed 58.3% of his passes last season, throwing five touchdown passes and having one pass intercepted. The Sun Devils only played four games due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He also rushed for 223 yards and four touchdowns for ASU, which went 2-2. Daniels gives ASU a legitimate Heisman contender, something it hasn't had for years. - Arizona Republic

Jayden Daniels passed for a touchdown and had two of Arizona State's six rushing touchdowns in the Sun Devils' 46-33 victory over Oregon State on Saturday night. Following a 70-7 blowout of rival Arizona, the Sun Devils' offense was explosive once again in the season finale amassing 514 total yards. Rachaad White had 158 of the Sun Devils' 375 yards rushing, including runs of 51 and 55 yards. Daniels' 53-yard touchdown run early in the third quarter gave the Sun Devils a 33-15 lead. Jack Colletto, who the Beavers often utilized at quarterback in short-yardage situations, scored on an 11-yard run to cut the lead to 33-21 midway through the third quarter. Back came the Sun Devils (2-2 Pac-12), who scored on White's 45-yard run to extend the lead to 40-21. - AP College Football

Can Jayden Daniels factor into the running game more than he did last year? That should be a resounding "yes". Last year Daniel tallied 355 yards on 125 tries. His most notable scrambles were the 17-yard touchdown run in the closing seconds that gave ASU a 38-34 win over Washington State and the other a 7-yard run in the closing seconds at Michigan State that set up a game-winning 1-yard touchdown by Benjamin. But ASU ran a conservative offense because of the youth up front and didn't want Daniels taking unnecessary risks. But Daniels has progressed, the line should be better and new coordinator Zak Hill's offense is more tailored to Daniels' strengths and one of those is getting out and improvising when a play breaks down. That is a dynamic the defense is going to have to account for. - Arizona Republic

First-year wide receivers coach Prentice Gill said the spring practices were especially important for Daniels, the first ASU true freshman to start from the outset of his career. "In this system, you need elite quarterback play," Gill said. "That not just the play itself, that's organizing and moving the pieces around. The seven practices helped Jayden get used to that and when (No.) 5 is used to it even if our guys do get a little lost out there, Jayden can get things done. It was huge. If we didn't have it, it would be really hard to function right now." Daniels averaged 274.8 yards total offense over 12 games in 2019 when ASU finished 8-5. He threw for 2,943 yards with 17 touchdowns and only two interceptions.

Now listed at 185 pounds, the 6-3 Daniels said going home to California during early quarantine helped him to put on some weight. "Then come back here and get bigger and strengthen in different areas. I'm still not where I want to be, but to be put on some more muscle mass I'm able to take some more hits and get back up." Daniels seems pleased with the working relationship he is building with Hill. "He asks me what do I like, what do I want to run, and we just have different ways of getting to it. He's going back to the film to see what best fits me. It's very exciting knowing I'm able to go to somebody and talk to him about this is what I want to do or I like this but I don't like this." - Arizona Republic

The Arizona State football game vs. UNLV on Sept 12 will be played at the new Allegiant Stadium, a $2-billion facility that will be home to the Las Vegas Raiders. Negotiations with the Raiders made it possible for the ASU-UNLV game to be played at Allegiant instead of at Sam Boyd Stadium on UNLV's campus. UNLV now is scheduled to play six of its seven home games at Allegiant including its season opener vs. California on Aug. 29. A game against Louisiana Tech still will be played on campus. "We are extremely appreciative of the Raiders organization for working with us on hosting the Arizona State game at Allegiant Stadium," UNLV athletic director Desiree Reed-Francois said Wednesday." Our community is energized behind new head coach Marcus Arroyo and his team as they move into one of the greatest sports facilities in the world and getting to host two Pac-12 Conference opponents there this fall will make it an even better experience for our fans and student-athletes." As part of the agreement for the ASU game to be played at Allegiant, UNLV is moving its game against Colorado State to Oct. 23. The Raiders are hosting Tampa Bay on Oct. 25 and wanted extra time to prepare for that Sunday night game. - Arizona Republic

Arizona State football fans already know they have something special in quarterback Jayden Daniels. A national radio host evidently believes it, too. Fox Sports Radio's Colin Cowherd praised the ASU QB on his show, The Herd with Colin Cowherd, last week, saying that Daniels, who was a freshman last season, could be a future No. 1 pick in the NFL draft. "I honestly believe this," Cowherd said while talking to ASU coach Herm Edwards on his show. "Next year, it's going to be Trevor Lawrence at Clemson and Justin Fields at Ohio State. I think the following year, your quarterback is going to be the No. 1 pick potentially. Do you think he has that talent?"

Daniels threw for almost 3,000 yards, 17 touchdowns and just two interceptions in his freshman season. So how does Edwards feel about his quarterback's talent? Edwards responded to Cowherd's question with this: "Well, he has talent, there's no doubt, and he's a hard worker. I think with (new ASU offensive coordinator) Zak Hill now on offense, I think it's going to fit a lot of things he can do well. That Boise State offense is something, I like it. They run the ball, they give you a lot of different formations, personnel groups. That's all NFL stuff and that's what guys want, make you go under center some. "I mean all those things occur, but it's just not only on the quarterback because those guys are only good as the guys that protect them. And you've got to have a good offensive line if you're going to win at any level and that's something we're continuing to try to build around here. But if we can protect him, this kid's got a chance to be really good. There's no doubt." - Arizona Republic

If any Arizona State fans are worried about losing coach Herm Edwards to the NFL, the ASU coach alleviated those fears earlier this week during an interview on The Herd with Colin Cowherd. Cowherd asked the Sun Devils coach if he might consider returning to the NFL, should a team come calling. "No, this is it," Edwards told Cowherd. "This is my last stand right here. I'm going to build a program and hopefully we can win the Pac-12 and hopefully win a Rose Bowl and then hand it over to somebody else. That's my goal." Edwards went 7-6 in his first season in Tempe in 2018. He went 8-5 last season and has a team projected to be a contender in the Pac-12 South in early predictions for the 2020 season.

Edwards went 54-74 in eight seasons as a coach in the NFL. He went 39-41 in five seasons with the New York Jets from 2001-05 and 15-33 in three seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs from 2006-08. Edwards said he was having a blast at ASU. "I'm having a blast. I miss my players at this point in time in the fact with the (COVID-19) virus," Edwards told Cowherd. "As we're talking, I can't say enough about all the first responders, all the medical folks all over the country. All the people that are putting their lives in harms' way trying to save those that have caught the virus. It's remarkable to see when you turn the television on and watch all these doctors and just people who continue to go into buildings knowing you know what, 'I could come out with the virus.' Those are the heroes, Colin. Those are truly the heroes." - Arizona Republic

The HBO documentary featuring the Arizona State football team that aired in October has been nominated for an Emmy Award. The Sun Devils were one of four college football teams featured in separate one-hour episodes called 24/7 College Football, a behind the scenes look that goes into a week of preparation leading up to a game day. The HBO crew followed the Sun Devils the week before it's Oct. 12 home game against Washington State. ASU won that game 38-34, the decisive points coming on a 17-yard touchdown run by freshman quarterback Jayden Daniels with 34 seconds left. The episode aired for the first time the following Wednesday, Oct. 16. It was nominated for an Emmy in the category of Outstanding Edited Sports Event Coverage. - East Valley Tribune

Arizona State quarterback Jayden Daniels had quite the true freshman debut. He led the Sun Devils to eight victories, most notably one over then No. 6 Oregon in the next to last game of the regular season. Then came a Territorial Cup win over rival Arizona and a Sun Bowl victory over Florida State. But he is participating in spring football for the second time as a Sun Devil and in some ways is going through the learning process all over again. New offensive coordinator Zak Hill has brought with him a vastly different offense that places more burden on the quarterback, a responsibility Daniels welcomes.

Expectations on him last year were modest. But this season he is also being asked to step up as a leader, a role previously filled by the since-departed seniors. "He's going to be pressed upon to be a leader," Edwards said. "That wasn't required last year for him, done purposefully by me. I told him you don't need to lead, you need to play quarterback. Now this is his offense and he understands that." Daniels says right now the Sun Devils are working on base packages, with more detailed material added when the team convenes again at Camp Tontozona to start fall camp in August. Daniels is satisfied with where he is at but knows he has a long way to go. - Arizona Republic

With each team missing its standout rusher, defense dominated at Tuesday's Sun Bowl. Hardly pretty, but hardly a concern for Arizona State coach Herm Edwards. "Obviously it was a game not pleasing to the eye," he said. Willie Harts returned an interception 25 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter to lead Arizona State to a 20-14 victory against Florida State. Harts, a freshman cornerback, halted a 14-0 surge by Florida State (6-7) and helped the Sun Devils (8-5) hang on for their fourth Sun Bowl victory, despite not scoring an offensive touchdown. "Our D was on fire tonight," Harts added. "It just shows the potential for our defense."

James Blackman threw a 91-yard touchdown pass, the longest pass play in Sun Bowl history, to Tamorrion Terry to give Florida State its first lead, 14-9, in the third quarter. The Seminoles trailed 9-0 at halftime. Cristian Zendejas kicked a Sun Bowl record-tying four field goals for Arizona State, including a 34-yarder in the fourth quarter to cut the FSU lead to 14-12. Blackman's fourth interception of the game was returned by Harts to put the Sun Devils ahead for good with 10:06 left in the fourth. "When you get six turnovers, you should probably win the game," Edwards said. Jayden Daniels was named the game's MVP after going 12-for-28 passing for 198 yards to lead the Sun Devils. He also ran 36 yards and a 2-point conversion. - AP College Football

Arizona State offensive coordinator Rob Likens will not return next season. Sun Devils coach Herm Edwards announced the decision on Sunday, a day after Arizona State beat rival Arizona 24-14. Edwards said receivers coach Charlie Fisher and tight ends coach Donnie Yantis also will not be back. Edwards said the moves were based on offensive philosophy and not wins and losses. He wants the offense to be built around quarterback Jayden Daniels, who had a solid freshman season. Arizona State finished the regular season 7-5 and qualified for a bowl game for the second straight season. The Sun Devils finished 88th in the FBS in total offense at 379.6 yards per game and 94th in scoring at 25.2 points. - AP College Football

Jayden Daniels' big night on a prime-time national stage helped Arizona State stun No. 6 Oregon 31-28 Saturday night, giving the Sun Devils their biggest victory of the season. Daniels, a true freshman, completed 22 of 32 passes for 408 yards and three touchdowns and Arizona State intercepted two of Justin Herbert's passes in the fourth quarter. Arizona State (6-5, 3-5 Pac-12) ended Oregon's College Football Playoff hopes and its nine-game winning streak. The Sun Devils snapped a four-game losing streak with their first victory over a top-five team since Oct. 14, 2017, against then No. 5 Washington.

Oregon (9-2, 7-1) has clinched the Pac-12 North title and a place in the conference championship game. But the Ducks' best-case scenario is likely the Rose Bowl. "There's lot of goals that go into a season. One of them was to have ourselves in a situation coming into this game to be part of every conversation and every kind of championship," Oregon coach Mario Cristobal said. "But right now the only conversation that needs to take place for us as a team is the most logical one, that we get back to our process of being 1-0." The Sun Devils held on after Oregon scored three touchdowns in a 6:38 span in the wild fourth quarter. - Arizona State/AP College Football

Arizona State quarterback Jayden Daniels has surpassed expectations. He's averaging 301.3 yards of total offense per game, ranking first among freshmen nationally. He's also averaging 268.3 yards passing to rank among the top 20 quarterbacks overall nationwide. He's thrown eight touchdowns and just one interception. "We recruited him really hard out of high school," Utah coach Kyle Whittingham said. "He's a talented kid. He's not the biggest guy, only about 180 pounds, so he hasn't filled out yet, but he's doing a really nice job running the offense." - AP College Football

Jayden Daniels and Arizona State spoiled Mark Dantonio's bid for a milestone. Instead, the Michigan State coach was left to explain a chaotic finish to a disappointing home loss. Daniels directed Arizona State on a pressure-packed 75-yard drive and, after Eno Benjamin reached the ball to the goal line for a 1-yard touchdown run with 50 seconds remaining, the Sun Devils held on for a 10-7 victory over No. 18 Michigan State on Saturday. The Spartans had a tying field goal in the final seconds negated for having too many men on the field - a sour finish on a day when Dantonio had a chance to take over sole possession of the school record for victories. After falling behind late, the Spartans drove back to the Arizona State 24 and, after spiking the ball to stop the clock with 11 seconds left, they appeared to have enough time for one more throw.

But with no timeouts remaining, Michigan State (2-1) seemed indecisive, and eventually the field goal team rushed on. The Spartans barely snapped the ball in time to beat the play clock, and although Matt Coghlin's 42-yard kick went through, a replay review showed there were too many players on the field. "Initially, we were going to try to take a shot to the end zone," Dantonio said. "Then I said, 'Hey listen, we need to kick it, because if we catch the ball the game's probably over-if we catch the ball and we're not in the end zone, the game's probably over. Line up and kick it.' Our field goal kicker was a little late, sort of watching, so he runs out, the clock's ticking down. He still makes the field goal, but I'm not sure how - we had injuries on the offensive line - I think maybe one guy stayed in. I'm not sure." Coghlin had to try again from farther back, and he hooked the kick left for his third miss of the day. - AP College Football

Jayden Daniels passed for a pair of touchdowns and ran for another in his Arizona State debut, and the Sun Devils shut out the Kent State Golden Flashes for three quarters in a 30-7 win Thursday night in a season opener. Daniels finished 15 of 24 for 284 yards and two touchdowns. Arizona State has won 21 straight home openers and got its first win over a Mid-American Conference opponent. The Sun Devils held the Golden Flashes to 200 total yards - 80 passing - and recovered two fumbles. Kent State, which went with two quarterbacks in juniors Woody Barrett and Dustin Crum, lost its sixth straight opener.

Daniels, who played the entire game except for a few snaps at receiver, became the first true freshman to start the season opener in the modern era of Sun Devils football, which began in 1972 when freshmen became eligible to play. "It's the first win. Just happy, proud moment," Daniels said. "At first I was nervous but actually after the game settled down, it was just having fun playing football all over again, Pop Warner, high school and everything else." - AP College Football

Jayden Daniels was the varsity starting quarterback the day he showed up as a high school freshman. Now his college career is starting off much the same way. After a competitive battle, Daniels, a true freshman, was named the Arizona State starter by coach Herm Edwards, who Monday night confirmed what had been widely speculated the previous week. Daniels becomes the first true freshman to start the season opener at quarterback for the Sun Devils. Another true freshman, Joey Yellen, will be Daniels' backup. "It says a lot about him and his ability right now to do some things we feel real good about," Edwards said. "That's how we're going to roll." - Arizona Republic
