Keegan Patterson threw two touchdowns and Elijah Owens threw for another and Indiana State led the entire way beating Eastern Illinois 38-14 on Saturday. Owens started the Sycamores (2-0) off throwing a 19-yard score to Plez Lawrence for a 7-0 lead early in the first quarter. In the second, Patterson threw a 4-yard score to Larry Stephens III to make it 14-0. After halftime, the Panthers (1-1) reduced the deficit to 17-7 when Charles Kellom ran it in from 13 yards out. Lawrence pushed the Sycamores lead back to 17 points with a 4-yard run.Kellom ran it in again, this time from the 2, to bring EIU within 24-14 with 10:20 left in the fourth. The Sycamores sealed it when Patterson threw a 40-yard score to Rashad Rochelle and Nick Osho ran it in fro m 31 yards. Eastern Illinois still leads the all-time series against the Sycamores 46-41-4 going back to the first contest between the two programs in 1901. The Sycamores have reduced their deficit having won four of the last six contests since 2018 seas on despite EIU's two-game win streak entering Saturday. - AP College Football

WEEK 1 MISSOURI VALLEY FOOTBALL OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: RB Plez Lawrence, Indiana State, R-Jr., Kokomo, Ind.,...Lawrence scored three second-half touchdowns in helping Indiana State take the season-opening win over McKendree on Thursday night. Lawr ence scored two touchdowns (17-yard rushing, 75-yard receiving) in a decisive third quarter 21-0 swing against the Bearcats to give Indiana State a 34-12 lead. He added his final touchdown in the closing minute of the game with a four-yard rushing score to secure the 41-24 win. Lawrence finished with 225 total offensive yards (133 rushing, 92 receiving) marking a new career-high for the redshirt junior. His three touchdowns were the first by an Indiana State player since Lawrence recorded three scores b ack in 2023 against Murray State. - Missouri Valley Football

Plez Lawrence had three total touchdowns, including a 75-yard touchdown catch in the third quarter, for Indiana State University in a 41-24 win over DII McKendree University in the season opener for both teams on Thursday night. Lawrence rushed for a 17- yard touchdown and a 4-yard score in the second half for the Sycamores. Lawrence had 92 yards receiving and 133 on the ground. It was the fourth game of his career with over 100 yards rushing and his 75-yard score was the longest touchdown catch of his S ycamore career. Running back Nick Osho scored on a 4-yard touchdown grab to extend the Cyclones' lead to 27-12. Elijah Owens, who was a Jerry Rice Award finalist for the best freshman in the FCS last season, threw his first touchdown pass of the season t o Bryan Domino to give Indiana State a 10-3 lead. Owens went 20 of 28 for 254 yards.McKendree had a shaky start offensively, having an interception within the first two minutes of the game and a fumble in the first quarter. With less than two minu tes to play in the first half, Eddie Clark ran the ball in 2 yards to find the endzone for the Bearcats. An errant snap to Indiana State punter Harry Traum went over his head and into the endzone, resulting in a safety, to make it 13-12 heading into half time. Ty Michael threw two touchdown passes in the fourth quarter to bring the deficit to 34-24 for McKendree. He came in relief of his younger brother, starter Colt Michael, in the second half, who threw two interceptions. - AP College Football
