Stefano Giovannelli and Gabriel Abel scored rushing touchdowns and the defense made three fourth-down stops to lift St. Thomas-Minnesota to a 20-13 win over Drake on Saturday. Giovannelli scored on a 6-yard run late in the first quarter to cap a 14-play, 85-yard drive that started when the Bulldogs turned the ball over on downs at the Tommies 15. The last two Drake drives failed to get out of Bulldog territory because of fourth-down stops in the final five minutes. Nick Hand and Ryan Sever led the defen se for the Tommies (7-3, 5-2 Pioneer Football League), combing for 21 tackles, six apiece solo tackles. Logan Inagawa threw for 154 yards and scored on a 2-yard run in the first minute of the second quarter to tie the game at 7 for Drake (6-3, 5-1). - AP College Football

OCT 17 PIONEER FOOTBALL OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Gabe Abel, St. Thomas, (Fr., RB, Trenton, New Jersey),...Abel became the fourth FCS freshman to rush for three touchdowns this season in St. Thomas' 26-17 PFL victory against Drake, Saturday. In his f irst collegiate start, he had 18 carries for 100 yards, with 61 yards and a touchdown on four carries in the fourth quarter. With the game tied 7-7 in the second quarter, Abel's six-yard touchdown run broke the tie with 8:28 remaining in the half. He add ed a second touchdown run six minutes later, giving St. Thomas a 20-7 halftime lead. Abel wrapped up the day's scoring with a five-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter. He becomes the third PFL player to record three touchdown carries in a game this season. - Pioneer League Football

Gabriel Abel ran for 100 yards and three touchdowns as St. Thomas (Minn.) won its 35th straight regular-season game at home in beating winless Drake 26-14 on Saturday. Abel had a 6-yard scoring run and a 1-yarder in the first half, and his 5-yard touchdo wn capped the scoring early in the fourth quarter. Cade Sexauer was 15-of-25 passing and threw a touchdown pass for the Tommies (5-1, 3-0 Pioneer League). Drake (0-7, 0-4) jumped out to a 7-0 lead when Ian Corwin connected with Gage Vander Leest on a 2-y ard touchdown pass. Corwin threw an interception on the Bulldogs' next series, setting up Sexauer's 24-yard TD pass to Andrew McElroy two plays later that knotted the score at 7. Corwin led a 72-yard, 10-play drive that was capped by an 8-yard touchdown toss to Matt Hartlieb with 11 seconds to go before halftime.
