After having a few quarterback position battles in recent years, Toledo enters the 2022 season with an undisputed starter in Dequan Finn. That's not to say, however, that the coaching staff isn't keeping the fourth-year sophomore on his toes during prese ason drills. Head coach Jason Candle said there are growth opportunities available for Finn, especially when it comes to developing consistency in his game. "With five, six, seven starts under his belt in his career and a lot of meaningful opportunities, playing in the fourth quarter of a nip-and-tuck game at Notre Dame last year, he's been in some big moments," Candle said. "His completion percentage in the fourth quarter and overtime last year was six or seven points higher than it was during the rest of the game. You can look at that one of two ways: One is, when it matters the most, he plays his best. The other way to look at it, we've got to find ways to get him off to a better start. We've got to continue to put things in practice to challenge hi m, but there's no substitute for game experience. As for signs of growth and signs of progress, I am seeing those signs." - Toledo Blade

Toledo's 2021 season stalled because of inconsistent quarterback play. Carter Bradley was ineffective as a starter and Dequan Finn, while productive when he was on the field, didn't get enough snaps to overcome the sluggish offense. Once Finn became the starter, however, the offense took a major step forward. Part of the boost came from running back Bryant Koback, who's now on the Minnesota Vikings. But Finn went a long way in proving himself. He completed 57.6 percent of his passes for 2,067 yard s and 18 touchdowns, rushing for an additional 501 yards and nine TDs. Most impressive was Finn's lack of interceptions, as he only threw two, the fewest of any quarterback who started at least seven games last season. Finn was at his best late in the ye ar, with playing time becoming a comfort zone. He did lose a security blanket in wide receiver Matt Landers, who transferred to Arkansas. But the Rockets are happy with their group of pass-catchers, led by Devin Maddox and Jerjuan Newton. - Toledo Blade

His jersey might say Toledo, but in the seven games Dequan Finn started in 2021, he proved that he belonged in Louisiana with the rest of college football's top quarterbacks. He completed 57.6 percent of his passes for 2,067 yards, 18 touchdowns, and jus t two interceptions, and rushed for 501 yards and nine touchdowns. In November, Finn was 74 of 109 for 1,138 yards with 11 touchdowns and a single interception. He was only sacked once in Toledo's final three regular-season games. "Going down there, I kn ew I could compete with those guys," Finn said. "Just because they're at a bigger school doesn't mean a MACtion quarterback can't compete. I was fully confident in myself. I know what I'm capable of doing and that I can compete with anybody." Last summer , Finn spent time in San Diego with QB guru Tom House, who's best known for his work with Tom Brady. While in California, Finn was able to talk up college and NFL quarterbacks, similar to his experience at the Manning Passing Academy. - Toledo Blade

For the University of Toledo, a trip to Ford Field and the Mid-American Conference championship game hinges on the arm of whoever head coach Jason Candle and quarterbacks coach Robert Weiner tab as the starting quarterback. Dequan Finn, a third-year soph omore, is one of four quarterbacks hoping to take August by storm and lead the Rocket offense onto the field for their first snap against Norfolk State Sept. 4. "I've always appreciated Dequan's work ethic," Candle said. "He has a really good understandi ng that that position takes more effort. It takes more commitment. It takes more work, so to speak, when the lights aren't on you and you aren't at practice. He's always understood that and always been good at that."His summer schedule is proof. F inn worked out with teammates at UT, improving his timing with wide receivers, and then drove north to a personal trainer in Detroit. He wants the chemistry to become second nature so crucial third-down plays can be made with ease. "It's been a focused s ummer," Finn said. "I've worked on what I need to do to become the starter - mechanics, recognizing defenses, making sure I'm better every day, and being mentally and physically prepared." - Toledo Blade
