There can only be one quarterback, typically, but Michigan State football's backfield has another ongoing position battle that may continue all season. And Harold Joiner III stands head and shoulders above the rest of his fellow running backs. At least i n terms of size. The 6-foot-4, 215-pound Auburn transfer is competing with incumbent starter Jordon Simmons, 2019 starter Elijah Collins and Wake Forest transfer Kenneth Walker III for carries in a crowded competition. "I really liked what Harold Joiner did in (Saturday's) scrimmage," MSU coach Mel Tucker said Tuesday. "He was able to get his pads down and run with some authority. And he's got excellent ball skills out of the backfield." Joiner is significantly bigger than the other three he is competin g with, with more of a tight end or linebacker body than a traditional running back.Walker is 5-10 and 210 pounds, Simmons is 5-11 195, and Collins is 6-1 225. A fifth player, Connor Heyward, is shifting into more of an H-back hybrid role and is 6 -foot and 230 pounds. MSU offensive coordinator Jay Johnson feels despite Joiner's size, the junior from Birmingham, Alabama, can give MSU's offense additional versatility in the running and passing attacks. "He's long, he can run and he's shown good bal l skills to this point. So I think you could move him in a lot of different areas," Johnson said. "And we've tried to do that a little bit with him. I see him as being very multiple in use." - Lansing State Journal

Auburn sophomore running back Harold Joiner has entered the transfer portal, per reports. The news comes after Joiner participated in but did not receive a single carry in the Tigers' first two games of 2020. Joiner played in 17 games during his time at Auburn and took 15 carries for 103 yards and two touchdowns and also logged six receptions for 128 yards and one touchdown during that time. He was responsible for Auburn quarterback Bo Nix's longest pass in 2019, as he caught a 78-yard pass against Ole Miss. Joiner signed with Auburn in its class of 2018 as a four-star recruit out of Mountain Brook High School in Birmingham. He scored 16 touchdowns as a senior in high school, and his ability earned him a spot in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl as well as the Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Game. Joiner's departure would leave Auburn with junior Shaun Shivers, sophomore D.J. Williams, redshirt freshman Mark-Antony Richards and true freshman Tank Bigsby as its scholarship running backs. - Opelika-Auburn Ne ws

Gus Malzahn perked up when he mentioned the name of one of Auburn's running back options this fall. It was back in July at SEC Media Days, and Malzahn was meeting with the local media in a suite at the Wynfrey in Hoover shortly before he took the stage i n the main room. That's when he brought up "the Harold Joiner factor." "His skillset is unique," Malzahn said. "And it's different."The former four-star Mountain Brook prospect was a non-factor as a true freshman last season, when he redshirted wh ile appearing in just two games and finished the season with three carries for 9 yards and a touchdown. Malzahn hopes to establish a bigger role for him this fall as the Tigers try to reestablish their presence on the ground following a disappointing and uncharacteristic season running the ball in 2018. "Harold Joiner will, I really believe, be a big part of what our plans are," Malzahn said. "He's very unique from the standpoint that he can do a lot of different things. We will have a specific plan for him during fall camp and this season. His versatility gives us a lot of freedom." - Birmingham News
