The Michael Penix Jr. effect is real. Like UW's standout signal caller, defensive tackle Tuli Letuligasenoa will return for a sixth season in 2023, he announced Saturday. "Especially with big Mike making that announcement, for sure, I'm coming back," Let uligasenoa said following the Huskies' Saturday practice. When asked if Penix's return played a part in his own decision, the fifth-year junior defensive tackle added: "Not really, but it definitely helped. I just feel like that's what's best for me at t his point in my career." A 6-foot-1, 307-pound defensive lineman from Concord, California, Letuligasenoa started 11 of 12 games this fall and contributed 30 tackles with 4.5 tackles for loss and four pass breakups. A former four-star recruit in the 2018 class, he has amassed 94 tackles, 14 tackles for loss, seven passes defended, two sacks and an interception in five seasons and 40 career games. - Seattle Times

Washington's coaches teach the defensive lineman to fall back when they don't feel much resistance. A screen pass is likely coming. Taking those lessons to heart, Tuli Letuligasenoa felt the offensive lineman brush by, so he dropped into coverage. Washin gton's 300-pound wrecking ball didn't know if he had the ball in his hands until he was being hit, but it turned out to be the play that shifted momentum in the Huskies' favor. Dylan Morris threw two second-half touchdown passes after Letuligasenoa's int erception, and Washington extended the nation's longest losing streak to 19 with a 21-16 win over Arizona on Friday night. "They were going on that drive, three, four yards at a time," Washington coach Jimmy Lake said. "That interception by Tuli was a hu ge charge to the sideline, the offense, the defense, the whole team." Washington (3-4, 2-2 Pac-12) stumbled through the first half and was down nine headed into the fourth quarter.Letuligasenoa stopped Arizona's bid to pad its lead and Morris took it from there, hitting Terrell Bynum on two long passes to set up two scores. Washington's defense also shifted into a new gear, shutting down Arizona after being hit with big plays earlier. "We were down, but we rolled on for a little bit," said Bynum, who had five catches for 143 yards and a touchdown. Arizona (0-7, 0-4) seemed to be on its way to ending its school-record losing streak, taking a 16-7 lead into the fourth quarter before imploding. - Washington/AP College Football

Throughout the Chris Petersen era, UW depended on a steady stream of dominant defensive linemen: Danny Shelton, then Vita Vea, then Greg Gaines, then Levi Onwuzurike. It's unclear if anyone on Washington's current roster is capable of taking that torch. But Letuligasenoa - a 6-foot-2, 310-pound redshirt junior - certainly seems like the most likely candidate. "He's very, very passionate," Lake said. "He's obviously a really good football player. He does bring a lot of emotion to the defense. And now, he 's actually even better at keeping his poise. He was probably one of the main ones I had to hold back (from fighting) a few times here during training camp last year. But I love it. I love the guys that bring the energy, that bring the juice. That just i s infectious to the other players around him."In his fourth year on campus, Letuligasenoa is learning to channel that emotion. And most importantly, he's healthy, after missing two of the Huskies' four games last fall. Dubbed "the twins" because o f their instant connection, Letuligasenoa and Taimani both flashed this spring and will be counted on to stone the run and collapse opposing offensive lines. Tuitele and Jacob Bandes - a pair of sophomores and former four-star recruits - will likely cont ribute as well. - Seattle Times
