  09/02/21 - SS Joe FoucharSr/2023, LSU, 5-10, 198 (DS#37 SS) + More +

University of Arkansas safety Joe Foucha was voted as a captain along with quarterback KJ Jefferson, offensive tackle Myron Cunningham, linebacker Grant Morgan and safety Jalen Catalon by teammates Friday. Coach Sam Pittman announced the captains after Saturday's short mock game, and Foucha earned a hearty response from his teammates. "This will make my fourth year here," Foucha said Tuesday. "I've been here since 2018, and I've had a lot of ups and downs but I've overcome them. "It was a blessing for my teammates to select me as a captain. I feel like I earned the right for them to, and it just shows how much respect the guys on the team have for me."

Fellow captains Cunningham and Morgan talked up Foucha's role and leadership. "Joe brings a lot to the team," Cunningham said. "He brings energy, excitement. He's always jumping around and talking. He definitely brings that leadership factor. I'm personally very glad he got voted to be a captain this year." Added Morgan, "Whenever Joe first got here, he was wild and always on the ball. He was running around and always finding the ball. We were sitting there saying, "That is the little Honey Badger." "Like that's what I watched growing up was [LSU's] Tyrann Mathieu. So when we saw Joe, a kid from Louisiana, coming up here and getting the ball out of every single play, we were like, "This kid is special. This kid's going to do something good here." - Northwest Arkansas Times

It is not uncommon to see a player make a leap in performance in the second year under a defensive coordinator or in a specific scheme. In the Arkansas secondary, safety Joe Foucha is a prime candidate to do just that. A New Orleans native, Foucha has been a reliable piece in the back end for the Razorbacks the last two seasons, totaling 147 tackles and three interceptions. An uptick in his play would give Arkansas one of the top 1-2 safety punches in the SEC. "Last season I couldn't really lift weights and I felt like that affected me being in the game," Foucha said Thursday after the 12th practice of training camp. "But now that I'm 205 (pounds), my bench press went up, my squat went up, so I feel like that helped me on the practice side to be more physical and get ready for the games. "I'm at my best that I've ever been."

Arkansas second-year defensive coordinator Barry Odom has watched Foucha grow into a more consistent player since this time last year. He has coupled his athletic ability with a greater grasp of the details. Foucha appears to have shaken the shoulder injury that plagued him in the past, too. "He's understanding where he fits in the scheme, how to play, the different variations with how we're calling our coverage concepts in either man or zone," Odom said. "For 12 practices, he has been as consistent and made as many plays as anybody on the field." - Northwest Arkansas Times

Arkansas' defensive backs had blinders on during the first few days of spring drills under Sam Pittman last week. Literally. Each player in the Razorbacks' defensive backfield ran through position drills, team work and more with white tape attached to the upper-outside sight paths of their facemasks, blocking their periphery. Cornerbacks coach Sam Carter, who is in his second year with the program, was behind the move. "He wants us to keep our eyes in the right spot," Joe Foucha said Tuesday. "It's basically teaching us eye discipline. Don't look back at the quarterback (unless necessary), keep your eyes on your man. Just little things like that. "If it's a run, I know I've got to get in that run fit. I'm not turning my head to see who's trying to crack me. I'm more focusing on the run fit and keeping my eyes on the quarterback." When Arkansas hit the practice field outside Walker Pavilion on Tuesday, the blinders were gone. Carter felt as if the tactic had served its purpose. "Pretty much we kept our eyes on our man," Foucha said. "We didn't look and we kept our eyes on the quarterback if the player had to be looking at the quarterback. We basically kind of completed our task." - Northwest Arkansas Times

Sophomore safety Joe Foucha, who played off the bench for Arkansas, had two interceptions. His first interception came with 1:18 left in the first half. The Bulldogs had a first and 10 at the Arkansas 34 when Foucha intercepted Costello again with 14:20 left in the game. Foucha and Morgan also were credited with stopping Mississippi State running back Jo'Quavious Marks for a 2-yard loss on fourth and 2 from the Arkansas 7 with 4:39 left. "Joe had missed a few days of practice...and he just stayed with it, man," Pittman said of Foucha not starting. "He knew he was going to get in the game, and he came up big. "I'm so happy for him, so proud of him because it was bigger than him. It was about the team, and he tried to go get his job back. He just made it about the team." - Northwest Arkansas Times
