Maryland wide receiver Dontay Demus Jr. announced Thursday that he will forgo the bowl game to prepare for the 2023 NFL draft. Demus put his NFL dreams on hold, electing to return to College Park to reestablish his connection with quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa and continue to build Maryland's program. Although the Terps are bowl-eligible for the second straight year and won seven regular-season games for the first time since 2014, Demus never got back to his old self. He had five games in which he caught only one pass and never exceeded 100 receiving yards. After the loss to the Buckeyes, coach Mike Locksley emphasized Demus was still recovering from the knee injury but was improving.   The Terps lost a pair of standout wide receivers, Dontay Demus Jr. and Jeshaun Jones, to major knee injuries last season. Demus led the Big Ten in receiving yards before he tore his ACL in the fifth game. Both participated in the first official practice of the preseason. Demus decided to put his NFL dreams on hold to return to Maryland, and even after dealing with a bone bruise in his foot in addition to the knee injury, he was surprised by the speed of his recovery. "I'm pretty much doing everything except for a little less contact," said Demus, a senior. "I feel like everything's pretty 100 percent, to be honest."

Jones, in his fifth season as a Terp, tore his other ACL in 2019 and said his most recent recovery process was "a lot smoother than my first time." Jones and Demus join junior star Rakim Jarrett (829 receiving yards last season) and Florida transfer Jacob Copeland (642 yards in 2021) to form a formidable unit. "I think it could be scary with all the weapons we have outside, with Lia in the pocket, the line up front, the backs we've got," Jones said. "I think the pass game could really open up for us." - Washington Post

Mike Locksley said senior wide receiver Dontay Demus Jr. is "ahead of schedule" in his recovery from a knee injury he suffered last season and expects him to play in the season opener against Buffalo on Sept. 3, barring any setbacks. "[I'm] really impressed with how he's returned," Locksley said. "Our training staff, led by Brian Simerville, has done a tremendous job of getting Dontay back. I think last week he broke 21 or 22 [mph] on the Catapult [fitness tracker], which means he's got that explosiveness back." Demus, who was considered a potential mid-to-late-round draft pick last season, caught 28 passes for 507 yards and three touchdowns in five games before injuring his knee during a kick return in Maryland's loss to Iowa in October. Demus' return will be huge for the Terps, who are poised to have one of the best passing units in the conference. Demus, a three-time All-Big Ten honorable mention, is second in program history in career 100-yard games (seven), sixth in career touchdowns (13), eighth in career yards (1,775) and 12th in career receptions (106). - Baltimore Sun

Taulia Tagovailoa threw three touchdown passes, and Maryland routed Howard 62-0 Saturday night. Dontay Demus Jr. had six receptions for 128 yards and a touchdown for the Terrapins (2-0), who had little trouble following up their 30-24 defeat of West Virginia with another victory. Demus caught a touchdown in his sixth consecutive game, and he is the first Maryland player with consecutive 100-yard receiving games since Stefon Diggs in 2013. "He's been Mr. Consistent for us the last few years, but what I think you see now is the dividends from the work he's put in this summer," Maryland coach Mike Locksley said. "There's no player in our program that's probably matured as much and really, really put the work in to have the type of success he's had." Maryland outgained the Bison, 574-146. Howard (0-2), an FCS program, was 0 of 11 on third down attempts.

The Bison didn't play last fall, then lost their only two games in the spring in coach Larry Scott's first season. "I told them it wasn't about Maryland, it wasn't about the score, it wasn't about anything else, it was about us," Scott said. "We're starting to see the gains we're making and truly believing --- straining and fighting and playing hard and doing all the fundamental things we talk about doing to build a foundation for a program." Locksley opened his Terrapins tenure with a 79-0 pummeling of the Bison in 2019 that fell a point shy of matching the program's scoring record. This wasn't quite as lopsided, but it still wasn't especially competitive. - Maryland/AP College Football
