Washington's quarterback competition just got a little bit more crowded. Following the offseason departures of graduate student Kevin Thomson, redshirt sophomore Jacob Sirmon and true freshman Ethan Garbers, UW was left with just two scholarship signal callers - redshirt freshman Dylan Morris and incoming freshman Sam Huard - on its 2021 roster. But Thursday, Patrick O'Brien - a 6-foot-5, 235-pound redshirt senior from Colorado State - announced he will make a graduate transfer to Washington for his final season of eligibility.

In four games (and three starts) with the Rams in 2020, the San Juan Capistrano, Calif., product completed 56.3% of his passes and threw for 591 yards with three passing touchdowns, two rushing touchdowns and two interceptions - while splitting time with redshirt junior Todd Centeio. That's after he completed 62% of his passes and threw for 2,803 yards with 13 touchdowns and seven interceptions, while adding two more rushing scores, in 11 games (nine starts) in 2019. - Seattle Times

Patrick O'Brien, Colorado State's starting quarterback for the past two seasons, has entered the NCAA transfer portal. O'Brien has one year of eligibility remaining thanks to an NCAA rule that allowed all fall sports athletes to compete this year without losing a year of eligibility. The CSU quarterback announced his decision to enter the portal as a graduate transfer on Twitter. Once players enter the transfer portal, they can be recruited by other programs. O'Brien, a 6-foot-5, 235-pounder from San Juan Capistrano, spent two seasons at Nebraska before coming to CSU. He sat out the 2018 season under NCAA transfer rules while redshirting, then took over the starting job at CSU when Collin Hill suffered a season-ending knee injury three games into the 2019 season. - Fort Collins Coloradoan

Patrick O'Brien threw for two touchdowns and ran for another to lead Colorado State to its first victory of the season, 34-24 over Wyoming on Thursday night. The victory was the first for Steve Addazio as the Rams' head coach after a combined nine seasons as a head coach at Boston College and Temple. The win also snapped a four-game losing streak to Wyoming. O'Brien threw for 255 yards, tossing touchdown passes of 29 and 38 yards to Trey McBride. The first touchdown pass made it 14-0 and came on the first play following a strip-sack of Levi Williams by Dequan Jackson. The second TD to McBride gave CSU (1-1, 1-1 Mountain West) a 31-17 lead late in the third quarter.

Williams scored on a short run to get Wyoming within seven with 8:18 remaining but CSU used a 5 1/2-minute drive that ended with Robert Liss' 48-yard field goal. Dante Wright led the Rams with 146 yards receiving on 10 catches. McBride added 90 yards. Marshaun Cameron scored CSU's first touchdown with a 30-yard interception return. Xazavian Valladay rushed for 147 yards on 28 carries with a TD - his 10th career 100-yard game - and became the 12th player in Wyoming (1-2, 1-2) history to rush for 2,000 career yards. Williams threw for 321 yards with an interception. - AP College Football

Several CSU Rams football players declared their support for new coach Steve Addazio and the athletics department Tuesday night, denying allegations in a report published Tuesday by the Fort Collins Coloradoan earlier in the day. The report cited statements from 10 anonymous sources within the department who criticized CSU athletics' handling of positive COVID-19 tests. Those sources accused department officials of altering contact tracing reports so players could continue practicing and claimed players were threatened with reduced playing time if they quarantine.

One football player who declined to be identified described the situation as a "cover-up...it's not about the health and safety of the players but about just trying to make money off the players." Four CSU football players, including senior quarterback Patrick O'Brien, senior running back Marcus McElroy Jr. and senior defensive lineman Toby McBride, strongly disputed assertions in the report when asked by The Post for comment Tuesday evening. "They're not forcing us to play," O'Brien told The Post. "They're not saying, 'If you get sick, you still need to come.' I never got that from any of (my coaches)." - Denver Post

The top of the quarterback depth chart for Colorado State will almost definitely look the same this year as it did during the majority of 2019 as Patrick O'Brien returns to lead the Rams after starting the team's final nine games. He completed 62 percent of his passes for 2,803 yards, 13 touchdowns and seven interceptions a year ago. Though spring camp was cut short due to the coronavirus pandemic, new head coach Steve Addazio sounded pleased last winter with the redshirt senior's efforts to digest the new regime's basic philosophies. "Pat has grown every day since we've been here, grown with his intensity and everything about him," Addazio said. "I've been very pleased."

O'Brien's chemistry with the Rams' receivers should help. "I've played with Warren (Jackson), I've played with Nate (Craig-Myers), I've played with E.J. (Scott), I've played with Dante (Wright)," O'Brien said in May. "We already understand each other. I think after a couple weeks of practice, (chemistry) won't be too big of an issue because we all understand how we work amongst each other." Still, O'Brien has a lot to work on to become a reliable, consistent asset. His lack of pocket awareness was a problem at times. - Denver Post

Patrick O'Brien spent two months of quarantine releasing his inner Gardner Minshew. All over his upper lip. "It just kind of turned into a 'can-I-actually-do-it' kind of thing," Colorado State's senior quarterback said with a grin as he greeted reporters on a media video conference call Wednesday sporting a new mustache. "And then I realized quickly that I can do it. "I'm proud of myself that I'm actually able to grow some facial hair….Had to do something to spice up life."

When not styling his new look, the Rams signal-caller has been throwing and lifting weights near his home in San Juan Capistrano, Calif., south of Los Angeles. He basically got stuck at home during spring break after the spread of the coronavirus cut off interstate travel. He is itching to return to Fort Collins. "I've been in California too long," said O'Brien, the Nebraska Cornhuskers transfer who finished third in the Mountain West Conference last fall in passing efficiency (140.0), fourth in passing yards (2,803) and first in yards per pass attempt (8.3). "I'm ready to come back and play football and see the guys." - Denver Post
